Carl Robinson has accomplished quite a bit in his first nine Major League Soccer games at the helm of the Vancouver Whitecaps. Antonee Robinson Jersey . After a rocky off-season that saw star striker Camilo Sanvezzo force his way out of town, the energetic and enthusiastic rookie head coach retooled his roster and has Vancouver off to a 3-2-4 start, including a 3-1-1 mark at B.C. Place Stadium. Robinson then admittedly took a risk this week by selecting a "younger than young" starting 11 in a hard-fought 2-1 road defeat to Toronto FC in the first leg of Amway Canadian Championship semifinal that resulted in the Whitecaps escaping with a valuable away goal. But like so many teams in MLS, picking up wins on the road has been elusive, and Robinson will be looking for his first on Saturday when the Whitecaps visit the Columbus Crew. You can see all the action on TSN beginning at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. "Were hungry. Part of the reason I left some of the senior guys out on Wednesday was to rest them for Saturday," said the Welshman. "Theyve got to go in now and give me everything theyve got for the weekend." Vancouver is 0-1-3 on the road so far in 2014, but played tough in a loss to the L.A. Galaxy and a draw against to Real Salt Lake — two teams considered to be among the Western Conferences best. Robinson said its his job to find a way to get his players on the front foot when they are the visitors, something that comes much easier at home. "Once I find that solution its going to be a lot easier because it wont put us under as much pressure at B.C. Place in getting results," said Robinson. "Its known throughout MLS that teams, when they go on the road, do struggle. But I think that if youre able to win four or five games away from home and take care of your home business then youre going to be there in the playoffs. "MLS brings up funny results. You lose two or three games and youre down at the bottom of the conference. You win two or three games and youre at the top of the conference. Thats the way Major League Soccer is set up and I think its an exciting way to go." Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted said its up to the squad to trust themselves and their abilities in tough environments. "I think its a mentality thing — going away from home and still believing fully that you can go win, even against good teams," he said. "Believing in the team and believing in your own ability and going away from home and trying to win every game is an important thing." Ousted and the Whitecaps other regulars saw some of that fight from the sidelines on Wednesday as Vancouvers kids battled a Toronto roster that boasted high-priced talent like Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley. "The senior players were there and rooted them on and tried to support them as best as possible," said Ousted. "The young guys did brilliantly. It was a chance for them to show the coaches what they can do and they did really well." The Crew (3-3-3) won their first three games of the season but have failed to record a victory in the last six, including a 1-0 road loss to the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday. "They are a little bit of a wounded animal. Theyre a good team and teams like that will do anything to get back to winning ways," said Ousted. "Were going to their place, were going away from home and they probably are going to come out and give all they can to get the win. We need to be ready for both a battle and a soccer match. "The start of the game will probably be a battle and be about finding the edge. After that we can hopefully get our game going and keep the ball and get chances." Columbus, meanwhile, will be hoping to get back in the win column for the first time since March 29. "Well be coming home, so well have a little more energy, hopefully, that were playing in front of our home fans," Crew midfielder Ethan Finlay told the clubs official website. "(The Whitecaps) are a really good team ... theyre a team that you have to watch for, they have a lot of pieces going forward, and it will be a tough test." One of those pieces in Vancouvers attack is Pedro Morales, who has three goals and two assists in six games this season, including two in last weekends 3-2 home victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. The Chilean is one of the pieces Robinson brought in after Sanvezzos departure and his presence in midfield has been a big part of the Whitecaps early success as the team looks to return to the post-season after missing out in 2013. On the other side, Columbus boasts the equally dangerous Federico Higuain, a striker who has four goals and two assists so far in this campaign. "Hes a special player," Robinson said of the Argentine. "Ive got one in Pedro Morales. He makes things happen in games. "Its going to be interesting. Theres two playmaking players (who are) going to be on the field on Saturday and whichever one probably has the biggest influence will win the game." Notes: Vancouver is 2-2-0 all-time against Columbus, including a 2-1 home victory last season. ... Robinson said he was pleased with striker Omar Salgados performance on Wednesday. The 20-year-old started the season with the second-tier Charleston Battery, but was recalled after the Whitecaps parted ways with Kenny Miller. And with Darren Mattocks out injured, Robinson said the first overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft will remain with Vancouver for the foreseeable future. ... The second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship tie between Toronto and Vancouver goes Wednesday at B.C. Place. The winner of the two-game, total-goals series will meet either the Montreal Impact or FC Edmonton in the final. Sebastian Lletget Jersey . A fully booked flight forced me to leave two hours later. After a nice meal in which I studied the stats of the Argo win, I prepared to leave the restaurant. As I was gathering my things to leave many large individuals began to walk up and wait for tables. Ted Ligety, Mikaela Shiffrin, Bode Miller and Tim Jitloff underlined the squads enormous potential on the Rettenbach glacier in Austria.TORONTO – You know a baseball team is red hot when its rolling out different heroes each day. Edwin Encarnacion carried the torch for two days at Fenway Park this week; Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista have had their moments; lately Anthony Gose has contributed. In Friday nights edge-of-your-seat, 3-2 victory over Oakland, the heroes were different. One of them made his Blue Jays debut, Liam Hendriks, a 25-year-old who grew up on the other side of the world in Australia. Just up from Triple-A Buffalo, hed managed to fly his wife, Kristi, up from Fort Myers, Florida. His mother, Debbie, was home watching him pitch, sipping a Saturday morning coffee while he toiled on a Friday night. Another, Steve Tolleson, is playing for his third major league team and in his sixth big league organization. Oh, and theres still Encarnacion, although it was his defence Blue Jays fans would celebrate on this night, his home run bat tucked away but likely to reemerge at any moment. Hendriks pitched 5 2/3 innings of one run ball. He allowed three hits and walked three Athletics. At times he was hit hard, needing almost every inch of the 375 feet to the power alleys and the 400 feet to dead centerfield. But, as is the case when a team is rolling, things seem to go its way. "I felt really good early," said Hendriks. "I kind of got away from my game plan a little bit in the last couple of innings but the defence picked me up big time. I mean, when youve got guys like this behind you it gives you that much extra confidence that you can go out there and youre not having to strike everybody out. Its fantastic." Entering the game Hendriks had two career wins and an ERA north of six spread over parts of three seasons with Minnesota. He won his third career game. His ERA came down. The 30-year-old Tolleson contributed the big offensive blow, a two out, two-run home run in the second that broke the scoreless tie and gave Toronto a lead it wouldnt relinquish. The less talked about part of his game were the two big double plays turned in the third and seventh innings. On both occasions, Oaklands Nick Punto slid hard and fair into Tolleson. Each time, he made the turn. "Thats what a second baseman is here to do," said Tolleson. "The main goal is to get the ball turn. On this turf it allows us to play a little bit deeper but when you play deeper it also gives you time to get on you a little bit more. We got some big ones turned today and it was great to come out with that win." Encarnacion made two great defensive plays. Holding on a runner with two out in the sixth, he came off the bag and dived to his right to snag Josh Reddicks hard hit ground ball. Encarnacion sprung to his feet and slid into first, beating a hustling Reddick to the bag by a couple of steps. Then in the eighth, Oakland had two on and one out. The Jays led, at the time, 3-1. Yoenis Cespedes hit a flare to shallow right field. Encarnacion tracked the ball, making an over-the-shoulder, basket catch for the second out. "The last week or so I think hes played as good as Ive ever seen play over there," said manager John Gibbons. "That ball over his head today, I dont know if thats going to hit fair or foul but thats huge at that moment. Eddie, hes a big guy but hes a pretty good athlete." The Jays have won four in a row, nine of 11 and 14 of 19. R.A. Dickey will make the start on Saturday afternoon and with the forecast calling for a clear day and 23C, the roof may be open. Oakland will counter with former Blue Jay Jesse Chavez. REYES DEFENCE There have been times, since his return from tightness in his right hamstring, that Jose Reyes has had trouble getting to ground balls which require a number of strides to either his left or his right. Reyes disputes any suggestion hes struggled defensively. "I think Ive been playing very good defence," Reyes told TSN.ca. "I feel like everything is there. Last year I had a tough time going to my left side because my ankle but this year my ankle has been 100-percent. I feel like Im moving around the field very good. I have no problem." Reyes is right on both counts. Hiss defence is much better than last year and he can blame his ankle injury for decreased range. Chris Wondolowski Jersey. According to fangraphs.com Reyes Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR), a mathematical equation which calculates the number of runs saved or given up by a defender, is -1.1 so far this year. Thats a big improvement over his -5.3 of 2013. Still, the calculation suggests Reyes is an average to below-average defender. The great equalizer is Reyes plus arm. Typically, if he gets to the ball he will throw the runner out. Reyes insists hes healthy. The way hes running the bases, hes stolen seven and been caught only once and has appeared comfortable stretching base hits into doubles, reflects his claim. Running the bases and playing shortstop make different demands on the body. "When you run the bases you just run the bases but when you go side to side there are different steps you have to make," said Reyes. "I think its a little different. But like I said, everything feels good. My hamstring now, thank God, is 100-percent. I can go full out no problem." JANSSEN BACK IN FORM Casey Janssen is a perfect six-for-six in save opportunities since his return from an oblique strain on May 12. He hasnt thrown more than 19 pitches in any of his six appearances – that number reached in his first outing – and hes had a runner in scoring position only once. For a guy who missed most of spring training due to shoulder discomfort and then didnt throw for most of April thanks to the oblique problem, Janssen hasnt missed a beat. Dont expect a cake and balloons celebration, though. "Im not satisfied unless Im darn near perfect," said Janssen. "Thats the expectation I put on myself. I havent thought of it as Oh, Im doing so great, Im just doing what I hope and expect to do." Janssen picked up his fourth and fifth saves on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Boston. Manager John Gibbons said after the game on Wednesday he wouldnt use Janssen on a third-straight day. Then, on Thursday afternoon, Gibbons suggested Janssen had asked not to be ruled out. Turns out there was no save situation in the series finale, a 7-2 Blue Jays win, but would Janssen have been available? "Do I think I could have? Yes. Do I think that in a smart, perfect world, do they need to push that right then? Probably not," said Janssen. "Its a long year. Weve got hopefully a lot of wins to come if we continue to play like were going to play were going to be in a race in August and September. I think thats when you push guys a little bit more to their limits." With an inning under his belt in Fridays 3-2 win, Janssen has pitched on three of the last four days and on four of the last seven. Time will tell how he holds up but since his return, hes answered the call each time hes been needed. ROGERS DESIGNATED FOR ASSIGNMENT The Blue Jays are loathe to expose pitching depth to waivers but thanks to his poor start and the need to create a roster spot for Friday nights starter, Liam Hendriks, reliever Esmil Rogers was designated for assignment. "Hed been scuffling," said manager John Gibbons. "We had to make a move with somebody. We want to get a look at Rasmussen and see what he can do." After a solid 2013 season, his first in Toronto, which saw Rogers pitch effectively in relief and make 20 starts to cover injuries in the rotation, he never got on track this year. In 16 relief appearances, 20 2/3 innings, Rogers posted a 6.97 ERA and a 5.34 FIP. Most egregious was the home runs against number. The five Rogers allowed was the most on the pitching staff, starters included. Rogers final appearance came on Wednesday at Fenway Park. He entered the game in the eighth with the Blue Jays leading 6-1. He was touched for three runs on three hits and turned a comfortable lead into a nailbiter. "I dont think you can pin it on one outing," said Gibbons. "Its been a struggle for him." Rogers, 28, was acquired from Cleveland for Yan Gomes and Mike Aviles on November 3, 2012. He was, indirectly, the asset the Blue Jays had from John Farrells departure to the Red Sox. Rogers is owed $1.85 million this season. ' ' '
With the bye weeks behind us and a number of teams in most leagues out of fantasy playoff contention, we run down the top pickups on a now thin waiver wire. Dallas Mavericks Jerseys . WR Michael Crabtree (vs Rams)Last week: Injured A solid WR2 last year, Crabtree is expected to make his 2013 debut against St. Louis this weekend. Coming off a tough Achilles injury, and likely to be worked into the 49ers game plan slowly at least to start, dont expect Crabtree to hit his 2012 numbers right away. Hes still worth a pickup however as a possible WR3/flex play off the bat and possibly more moving forward this season. WR Miles Austin (vs Raiders)Last week: 1 catch, 17 yards Austin made a less than impressive return from a three-game absence Sunday against the Giants, but it should only get better from here. If the 29-year-olds hamstring holds up down the stretch, the hope is he supplants Terrence Williams in terms of usage in the Cowboys offence. While he may be more useful in real football, drawing attention away from Dez Bryant and Jason Witten, his play could warrant five-plus targets in a strong offence. WR Rod Streater (at Cowboys)Last week: 5 catches, 93 yards Two things conspire to make Streater worth a look if youre in need of help at WR. One, Matt McGloin providing a better pass game than the less-accurate, more prone to run Terrelle Pryor in Oakland, and two, Denarius Moores injury which elevated Streater to McGloins top target. McGloin looks to have secured the Raiders QB job at least for the time being and playing on a short week, Moore may not be ready to return until Week 14. Streater should see a similar workload on American Thanksgiving against a Cowboys defence that can certainly be scored on. RB Rashard Mendenhall (at Eagles)Last week: 13 carries, 54 yards, 1 TD Mendenhall had become the forgotten man in Arizona with fantasy players leaning more towards Andre Ellington of late. And while its clear the two are locked in a timeshare in the Cardinals backfield, its one that sees Mendenhall receive all the red zone touches. The two had similar workloads and totals in Arizonas big win over the Colts on Sunday, the only difference – and its a big one – was Mendenhalls touchdown. Take the veteran over the rookie in Arizona, hell score you more touchdowns. QB Matt Flynn (at Lions)Last week: 21/36, 218 yards, 1 TD The quarterback with nine lives appears to be in the best possible situation. Green Bay has something that Seattle, Oakland, and Buffalo doesnt and it makes Flynn look like a serviceable NFL QB. Flynns play in relief of Scott Tolzien against Minnesota warrants another start, unless of course Aaron Rodgers returns from injury. And do you remember the last time Flynn played Detroit while wearing a Packers jersey? It earned him a lot of money. Green Bay – and desperate fantasy owners – can only hope for a similar outcome this Thursday. TE Rob Housler (at Eagles)Last week: 4 catches, 51 yards Housler has flown under the radar all season and while that was certainly justified the first few weeks of the season, for desperate fantasy owners, hes been at least worth a look ever since. Housler scores very few touchdowns so hell never be mistaken as a TE1, but hes steady in averaging 50+ receiving yards per game of late. Arizona has been hot as of late and while thats unlikely to last too much longer, Housler is a viable injury replacement during their run. Luka Doncic Jersey . Erik Johnson, Marc-Andre Cliche and Cody McLeod also provided offense for the Avalanche, who closed out the seasons first month by snapping a two-game slide. Chad Johnson was on the hook for all five goals on 23 shots for the Islanders, who have lost four of six. McLeod opened the scoring 2:34 after the opening faceoff, cutting to the front of the crease and tapping home a Matt Duchene centering feed. Colorado effectively put the game away with a three-goal second-period burst. MacKinnon doubled the home addvantage with a power-play strike just shy of the 3 1/2-minute mark of the second, Cliche deposited his first goal of the season one second shy of nine minutes played, then MacKinnon added another on a redirection of a Jarome Iginla pass 1:15 later. Kostas Antetokounmpo Mavericks Jersey. Johnsons point drive with 6:20 remaining in the contest provided a five-goal margin for the Avalanche. Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork. Leonardo Spinazzola Juventus Jersey .com) - Time is running out for Regan Smith to catch his JR Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott in the Nationwide Series championship point standings. With just five races remaining, Elliott, a rookie in the series this season, holds a 26-point lead over Smith. Nationwide is running at Kansas on Saturday and then Charlotte next week. The series will take a two-week break before the season concludes with Texas (Nov. 1), Phoenix (Nov. 8) and Homestead (Nov. 15). Four of the final five races will be contested on 1.5-mile racetracks, including Kansas. On Friday, Smith confirmed that he has signed a one-year contract extension with JR Motorsports, a Nationwide team co-owned by Sprint Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., his sister, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. Earnhardt had announced Smiths new agreement earlier this week on Twitter. @ReganSmith and @JRMotorsports just finished the paperwork that keeps him in the 7 car for 2015. Couldnt be more pleased about this, Earnhardt tweeted on Wednesday. Smith, the driver of the No. 7 Chevrolet, made his Nationwide debut with JRM in the 2012 season-finale at Homestead, a race in which he scored his first career victory in the series. Last year, Smith finished third in Nationwide points. He has scored one win and a series-best 24 top-10 finishes this season. Excited to be back, Smith said of his contract renewal with JRM. Ive been fortunate to have a great place to call home and a great place to race at with good people, good sponsors and fast race cars. As a driver, thats something you always look for and its important. You want to have an opportunity to go out there and showcase what you can do every week, and Im fortunate enough to have that. As bosses, Dale, Kelley and Mr. H. (Hendrick) have been absolutely amazing to me. Ive learned a lot over the past two years. And Im sure I will learn a lot more next year. One year ago at Kansas, Smith led a race-high 81 laps but ended up finishing third after he was on pit road just before a caution came out and had to rally late in the race. The season is really starting to wind down, and now is the time we have to be making gains in the points, he said. At this point, we have to be finishing better than our competition. There isnt any room left for mistakes or poor finishes. Elliott will compete in a NASCAR national touring series race at Kansas for the first time. Two of his three wins in Nationwide this season have occurred on a 1.5-mile track (Texas and Chicagoland). Forty-three teams are on the entry list for the Kansas Lottery 300. Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Matt Kenseth and Paul Menard are those Sprint Cup regulars scheduled to compete in this race. Kenseth is the race defending winner. Series: NASCAR Nationwide. LOUIS -- The St.Earlier this week, Natalie Achonwa of the University of Notre Dame was named one of the top fifty players in America. In an early season watch list for The Naismith Trophy, which recognizes the womens college player of the year, the Guelph, Ontario native was one of two Canadians acknowledged. She made the accomplishment while rehabbing from a meniscus tear in her right knee, which forced her to miss the first three games of the season. If the injury sounds familiar, its the same one that has sidelined Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose for the rest of the NBA season. However, Achonwa, a 63 forward, underwent a different surgical procedure which allowed her to get back on the court in four weeks to compete in her final year. In Achonwas first three seasons at Notre Dame, they have made it to the Final Four each time and lost in the championship game twice. "I always say its like we went to the ball three years in a row, and we never got the crown," she states. "We were always the bridesmaid and never got to wear the dress. I know the three seniors and captains between us - we want to leave Notre Dame a legacy. The class before us with Skylar Diggins and Kaila Turner, they really started something and we battled with them for three years to three Final Fours, and this year we want that ring. After all weve been through, thats whats pushing us to leave Notre Dame on a high note." This seasons Fighting Irish squad is already off to a strong start, undefeated at 5-0 and ranked No. 5 in the country. In a rare NCAA game on Sunday December 1, they will host Duquesne at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario. "One of the reasons I came to Notre Dame is you have opportunities like this," she says. "We went to Europe this year, weve done so much and now coach is letting me have a senior game back at home. Im just really blessed for the opportunity to be able play in front of my family and friends." Achonwa isnt a stranger to playing in Canada or for her country. As a memberr of the Senior Womens National Team, she helped the squad to a silver medal at the FIBA Americas tournament this summer and a berth to the World Championships in 2014. Emre Can Jersey. Yet for all their success, the hype surrounding Canada Basketball still resides with the mens team. A program ranked 26th in the world and has fallen short of expectations in recent years, while the women seemingly get no respect. "I dont know if its about respect," Achowna says. "But more recognition that we are good and that we do compete for medals. Its just the popularity of womens basketball as a whole, its sad. Just because we cant dunk or throw alley-oops, people dont see it as entertaining. I think thats changing even with the Olympics two years ago and that brought some awareness back to the program. Just the rise and talent and how well weve been competing the last couple of years, and continuing on in the future. Im hoping it will bring some recognition in womens basketball." Her inclusion on the Naismith watch list already indicates that Achonwa is primed to be the recipient for more recognition, which will be key as she prepares for life after South Bend, Indiana. "I definitively want to continue to play outside of Canada Basketball, I want to play professionally as well," she says. "If I get drafted this year that would be great, but we have a very competitive class and theres a lot of great players." What may come off as false modesty is the reality that its not easy to make a WNBA roster, particularly with only 12 teams in the league. "Theres a great difference between the WNBA and NBA. If youre not a top five pick, youre trying out for a team, youre not on the team. If I make a team, I would love to be in the WNBA, but I would play overseas." However, right now shes more concerned with how shes going to finish this week, playing basketball at home with her friends and family watching, and taking one more step towards winning a national championship. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a trooper responded to a report of a stalled vehicle in the lane on Interstate Highway 394 heading west out of downtown Minneapolis. As Simpson got out of a red Dodge Charger, the trooper observed him with watery eyes and slightly slurred speech. Simpson said he was at the Pour House, a popular bar nearby, but denied that hed been drinking. After Simpson took field sobriety tests, according to the State Patrol report, he was arrested at 4:03 a.m. local time. Simpson was booked about an hour and a half later at the Hennepin County jail, where he refused to take a breath test. According to the countys online record, Simpson was released at 12:52 p.m. The Vikings beat Washington on Thursday, so players have the weekend off. The Vikings issued a statement acknowledging their awareness of the situation. "We are continuing to gather information and will have further comment at the apppropriate time," the statement said. Chelsea Jerseys. . Simpson is on his second one-year contract with the team after playing his first three NFL seasons in Cincinnati. There, he spent 15 days in jail for a felony drug conviction tied to a 2 1/2-pound marijuana shipment to his home in Kentucky, where authorities said they found another pound of the drug inside the house in September 2011. His sentence included three years of probation. The NFL suspended him for three games last year for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. League spokesman Randall Liu said Saturday that Simpsons case will be reviewed. Simpson leads the Vikings with 491 yards receiving this season, but the 27-year-old has yet to score a touchdown in 21 regular-season games with the team. His productivity this year is the primary reason coaches have cited for their minimal use of first-round draft pick Cordarrelle Patterson. Patterson, who had his first career scoring reception in the 34-27 victory over the Redskins on Thursday, plays the same split end spot as Simpson. The Vikings (2-7) play next at the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 17. ' ' '

NASHVILLE -- Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt has hired Chargers assistant Jason Michael to be Tennessees new offensive co-ordinator as he continues to fill out his coaching staff. Ultra Boost Billig Kaufen . The Titans announced the hiring on Friday. Whisenhunt, who was hired Monday, plans to call the plays offensively. But he said that Michael really impressed him with his knowledge of the run and pass games and that the coach was a big part of putting together plans in San Diego this season. "He is very familiar with the offensive system that we want to implement here, which includes bits and pieces from a number of offensive systems," Whisenhunt said in a statement. "He is intelligent and a good communicator. He was responsible for presenting a couple of game-plan packages to our offence each week and he was impressive." Michael, 35, worked this past season with Whisenhunt in San Diego. Michael spent the past three seasons coaching tight ends for the Chargers with San Diego ranking in the NFLs top 10 offensively in two of his three seasons. He also was first an offensive assistant and then quarterbacks coach with San Francisco in 2009 and 2010. He has local ties having played quarterback helping Western Kentucky win the 2002 Division I-AA championship. Michael started coaching at the University of Tennessee as a graduate assistant before moving to the NFL in 2005 with Oakland, then the Jets. Michael spent 2008 coaching tight ends at the University of Tennessee in Phillip Fulmers final season. Michael called this a great situation with the chance to work with Whisenhunt in Tennessee exciting both professionally and personally. He said he learned so much from Whisenhunt and that the men worked well together. "It will be fun to come there and create an offence that is built around a new group of players," Michael said. Ultimately, of the five Canadian amateurs competing in the second round, only 23-year-old Taylor Pendrith made the cut. Despite shooting a 5-over 75 in the second round to erase the stellar 5-under 65 he shot on Thursday, Pendrith squeaked into the next round at even par, 10 strokes behind leaders Jim Furyk and Tim Petrovic. "It was a disappointing round today," said Pendrith, who finished one stroke off the lead after the first round of play. "To play well yesterday and come out and not play my best (today) ... I didnt hit many greens and didnt give myself too many chances for birdies. Thats the main thing. My ball striking was off today." Meanwhile, amateur Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., narrowly missed the opportunity to golf throughout the weekend. The 20-year-old shot a birdie on 16, and another on 18, to finish at 1-over 171 after two days, missing the cut by one stroke. "Im a little rattled right now," said Svensson. "Im pretty disappointed. I know I can make the cut easily if I play well. My putting wasnt there this week. It happens. My game can beat a lot of pros, and I can definitely make the cut at the Canadian Open. "Its always good experience. But I dont need experience anymore, I just need to go out there and play my game." Corey Conners and Kevin Carrigan finished 5-over after 36 holes, while Chris Hemmerich, after a tough first round on Thursday, finished 8-over 148 overall. Pendrith, at No. 18 in the World Amateur Golf rankings, is Canadas top male amateur. A recent graduate from Kent State University in Ohio, Pendrith is a hard-hitting golfer who could make the move from amateur to professional as early as this fall. Since 1984, only six amateur Canadian golfers had made the cut at the Canadian Open: Chris Baryla in 2003; Richard Scott and Victor Ciesielski in 2006; Nick Taylor in 2008; and Albin Choi in 2012. "Its a great experience," said Pendrith of his first tournament playing versus the pros. "Im having a great time out here. To get a round of 65 in my first PGA Tour is pretty awesome. The whole atmosphere was amazing. Im hoping to be back here in a couple of years." Making the cut alongside Pendrith were five other Canadians -- David Hearn (3-under 137), Adam Hadwin (1-under 139), Brad Fritsch (even par), veteran Mike Weir (even par), and Graham DeLaet (8-under 132). On the heels of an impressive first-round performance in which he sunk five birdies, Hearn finished the daay at even-par thanks, in part, to an eight-foot putt for birdie on the eighth hole. Fake Yeezy Kaufen. "If you look at the card, thats kind of the way I played," said Hearn, who finished 32nd in last weeks British Open. "I made some good saves when I needed to, and I just never really got the ball quite as close as I did yesterday. But I hit the ball great from tee to green. If I can continue to do that for the rest of the week, I know Im going to play well." Hadwin sunk three birdies on Friday to finish at 1-under 69 on the day, while Fritschs birdie on 18 gave him a 2-under 68, good for even par after two rounds. Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, came close to bettering his score from the green on several occasions. The crowd favourite two-putted for par on the par-4 fourth hole, and again on the par-5 sixth hole, narrowly missed the cup with his first putt both times. "They call it a game of inches, right?" said Weir, who is playing in his 24th Canadian Open. "There were a lot of things that, if they fall the other way, it could have been a good score. It just didnt happen today. A lot of really good putts with nice speed on the correct side of the hole looked like they were going to go in, but for whatever reason they just didnt. "I had great crowd support out there and I was hoping to just make a few birdies and get some momentum going and get some roars going, but it just didnt happen today." Four-time PGA Tour-winner Stephen Ames of Calgary finished at the bottom of the pack, shooting 10-over 150 for the tournaments fourth-worst result. Going into the weekend, Canadian hopes now rest on Graham DeLaet, who moved into third at 8-under after two rounds. DeLaet, ranked 38th in the world, tied the Royal Montreal course record on Friday after sinking nine birdies for 7-under 63. He also became the first Canadian since Weir in 2004 to finish in the top-3 after 36 holes. Canadians Robbie Greenwell (2-over 142), Eugene Wong (2-over 142), Dave Levesque (3-over 173), Benjamin Silverman (4-over 144), Michael Gligic (4-over 144), Beon Yeong Lee (5-over 145), Bill Walsh (7-over 147) and Kevin Stinson (13-over 153) did not make the cut. Notes: No Canadian has won the Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher raised the Trophy in 1954. à The Canadian Open had not taken place in Montreal since 2001. à 73 golfers made the cut after 36 holes. à Amateur golfers competing in the PGA Tour waive their right to receive prize money. à Defending champion Brandt Snedeker shot an opening-round 69 and finished 2-under 68 on Friday. MIAMI -- Slugger Giancarlo Stanton hasnt changed his opinion about spacious Marlins Park. Durham Smythe Womens Jersey . He still considers it a pitchers park and dislikes the dimensions. His Miami Marlins teammates are trying mightily to change his mind. The Marlins begin a six-game homestand Tuesday against Philadelphia with a 17-5 home record, best in the majors. In a ballpark considered unfriendly to hitters, Miami is averaging 5.7 runs per game, second-best in the majors at home. Stantons leading the way. He has found the distant fences annoying since the park opened in 2012, but he nonetheless has 31 RBIs at home, the most in the majors. In Miami he has seven homers, a .354 batting average and a 1.166 OPS. However, Stanton still insists the Marlins home is a pitchers park. "It is in terms of power, but this conversation is not relevant," he said with a frown. "I dont want to talk about complaining about the ballpark." That would be unseemly when the Marlins have outscored opponents 125-70 at home. The differential is especially eye-popping because theyve been outscored 114-79 on the road, where their record is 6-17, worst in the majors. They concluded another dismal trip Sunday, going 4-7 and losing ace Jose Fernandez to a season-ending elbow injury. But theyve been the mighty Marlins at home, which is a big change. In their first two seasons at Marlins Park, the home team averaged 3.6 runs per game, third-worst in the majors. But theyve altered their lineup and their approach at the plate. As a result, the Marlins home batting average is .296, second-best in the majors. "Its really extraordinary what theyre doing this year -- a perfect example of how youve got to attack your home field," New York Mets manager Terry Collins said. With the distances to the wall 386 feet in left centre, 398 in right centre and 418 in centre, Marlins hitters have stopped grousing and started driving the ball into the roomy power alleys. They rank among the major-league leaders with 47 doubles and six triples at home. "We knew it was going to be tough to hit home runs," manager Mike Redmond said. "But we talked during spring training about leading the league in doubles and putting balls in the gaps. The field is so big you dont have to hit home runs to do damage. You can hit triples and doubles, and you can go first to third on a single up the middle. You dont have to swing for the fences. You can stay within yourself and still be rewarded." Even Stanton agrees. He has seen a lot of 400-foot flyouts since Marlins Park opened, but he has also watched his team score runs in bunches this year. "Youre not going to win by hitting homers here," Stanton said. "But if you understand that the guy on first is in scoring position, thats going to work to our advantage. On a normal double, here you can score from first standing up a lot of the time. We understand that and are taking advantage of it." The Marlins tailored their lineup to the ballpark last off-season by acquiring left-handed hitter Garrett Jones and switch-hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Both have homered into the upper deck in right field, where the stands are most reachable. "The easier way to hit home runs in this ballpark is for a left-handed hitter, so we did try to bring in some left-handed power," Redmond said. Miami also signed Casey McGehee, a right-handed hitter who bats mostly cleanup. He has only one homer but is hitting .422 with runners in scoring position. "Theyve done here of using the field to hit all sorts of different ways -- a drag bunt, balls hit up the middle," Collins said. "Youve got to tip your hat that theyve made those adjustments. This is a tough park to hit in. What theyve done is found guys who put the ball in play and are difficult to defence." Other opponents agree, but some also speculate about hidden reasons for the way the Marlins hit in their home park. When Miami scored 23 runs to sweep a three-game series at home against Atlanta last month, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez jokingly wondered if the Marlins had a spy in the outfield tipping their hitters on pitches. "We got in their heads a little bit," Redmond said. Its good to have visiting teams scratching their heads. And for the Marlins, who are above .500 despite their woeful road record, its good to be home. Bob Griese Youth Jersey . MILAN, Italy -- Inter Milan moved back into fourth spot in Serie A with a dominant 3-0 victory at Udinese on Sunday, while newly-promoted Hellas Verona beat Cagliari 2-1 to also keep up the pressure on the top three. Marcos Acuna Argentina Jersey . Rodrigo Palacio, Andrea Ranocchia and Ricardo Alvarez scored for Inter, which never really looked like letting its lead slip despite a couple of defensive errors. Luca Toni and Bosko Jankovic were on target in Verona to help the hosts to their fifth win in six matches. Inter and Verona are both level on 22 points, six behind Juventus and Napoli and eight off leader Roma, which has won all 10 of its matches and visits Torino later. Elsewhere, teenage forward Domenico Berardi scored a hat trick to help Sassuolo beat 10-man Sampdoria 4-3, while Lazio fell to a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Genoa. Udineses loss to Roma last week was its first in 23 home matches. It found itself behind again in the 25th minute when Palacio headed in Saphir Taiders free kick. It got worse for Udinese four minutes later when Zeljko Brkic completely mistimed his exit and flapped haplessly at Esteban Cambiassos corner, allowing Ranocchia to volley in at the far post. Walter Samuel was playing only his second match since returning from six months out with injury and the defender made two errors which Udinese failed to capitalise on. He was substituted after picking up a slight knock. Fredy Guarin hit the post in the second half before Alvarez added a third in stoppage time, slotting Palacios cross into an empty net. Verona also dominated on its way to a sixth successive home victory. Cagliari has now lost three successive matches. Toni headed home a corner in the eighth minute to give Verona an early lead and the home side all but sealed the match 12 minutes into the second half when Jankovic played a one-two with Romulo before curling into the far corner. Daniele Conti volleyed in a consolation goal for Cagliari in stoppage time. In Rome, Lazio seemed in complete control in the first half and Genoa had goalkeeper Mattia Perin to thank for keeping them in the match with several crucial saves, including a spectacular stop to deny Miroslav Klose. Juraj Kucka broke the deadlock on the hour mark with an angled drive and Genoa doubled its lead 10 minutes later when Alberto Gilardino converted a penalty following a Michael Ciani handball. Newly-promoted Sassuolos match at Sampdoria had already been deemed a relegation dogfight and the home side appeared to be in control after Nicola Pozzi had given it a first half lead. However, the match turned at the start of the first half. Berardi fired in the equalizer before putting Sassulo in front from the penalty spot two minutes later after Andrea Costa had tripped the youngster. Costa was shown a second yellow card and dismissed. Antonio Floro Flores appeared to have secured the match but Samp levelled with goals from Eder and Lorenzo De Silvestri. But it wasnt over yet and Berardi secured Sassuolos second win of the season in the final minute, with another penalty after Shkodran Mustafi fouled Diego Farias. In the lunchtime kickoff, Livorno beat 10-man Atalanta 1-0 to earn its first win in eight matches. Paulinho scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute, running onto Leandro Grecos through ball before finishing with an angled drive across the goal into the bottom corner. Things got worse for Atalanta as they were forced to play for nearly an hour a man short after Carlos Carmona was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Ibrahima Mbaye in the 34th minute. Alfred Duncan also hit the post for Livorno. Gabriel Mercado Argentina Jersey . "I never commented to anyone that I wanted out," he explained. "My heart is with this group and making the playoffs." Five guys skating by the bench for high fives after a goal. Ubiquitous in NHL arenas. When did it begin? I wanted to find out, so I called Darcy Tucker. Wed heard that Vancouver Giants head coach Don Hay has said he thinks the three-time Memorial Cup champion Kamloops Blazers – his former team – may have started the trend in the early 90s. Tucker remembers doing the fly-by, but not starting it. Ryan Huska, a former Blazer teammate and current Kelowna Rockets head coach, said the same. Drew Bannister played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 92 Memorial Cup final against Kamloops. He says the Hounds were already doing the fly-by themselves, as were other OHL teams. Square one. I turned to my colleagues. Ray Ferraro figured it was a thing by 2000, but not a thing he warmly embraced. "I hated it," he wrote in an email. I watched old tapes. The fly-by was definitely happening by 2000. I found examples as early as the 95/96 season, like this one: Saku Koivu in his rookie year. Young players were more likely to do it than old, which is consistent with the widely held belief that junior hockey players were doing the fly-by before NHLers. It trickled up. "It was totally a junior thing. I think it started close to my first year – 95," said Jeff ONeill, who shares Ferraros distaste for the fly-by. "I hate it." But he did give me my first solid lead. "I may be wrong, but I think the Peterborough Petes may have started it." I called Jeff Twohey. Twohey is the GM of the Oshawa Generals, but was with the Petes for 30 years. He started as a scout in 1980, and was general manager for 17 seasons. "I think we were the first team to ever do it," says Twohey. "My gut was that we started it. We had such a tight-knit group back in the early 80s." Definitely smoke. But fire? I asked around. "It was not done when I was in junior from 81-84," wrote Dave Reid in an email. "Late 80s is probably close." Andrew MacVicar played from 86-89 with the Petes. He remembers doing the fly-by, but only on big goals or in the playoffs. "It was supposed to be something really special," says MacVicar. MacVicars specific memory that teammate Billy Huard began doing the fly-by more often and earlier in games as a way to get under the skin of Petes opponents was a dead end, too. Huard has no recollection of doing it at all, let alone having a hand in its evolution. MacVicar thought Jamie Hicks (86-90) would remember. He doesnt. He also thought Mark Freer (85-88) might remember. Freer does, vaguely, but he named Kris King as the possible creator of the fly-by, and King has no memory of it. King then suggested that Twohey might have something to say on the matter. This is about the time I got dizzy. I called Corey Foster, who played in Peterborough from 86-89. He says the Petes were definitely doing the fly-by in his final year with the team, when they went to the Memorial Cup. I went back to the tape library. No Petes games. But we do have the final, and I found a fly-by. Scott Scissons, playing for the Saskatoon Blades. Its a beta version of the fly-by – instead of flying past the bench, the players sort of turn around and just stand there – but it counts. Thats the earliest video evidence we have. It seemed unlikely that the Scissons goal was the fly-bys big bang. I was getting nowhere, so we put the question to twitter. Curious theories poured in. One suggestion had it that the fly-by grew out of Brian Propps unique and unusual guffaw goal celebration. Propp says no. Others blamed Hollywood. I knew the Top Gun hypothesis was a joke, but I watched all of D2: Mighty Ducks and Slap Shot before I realized those were probably tongue-in-cheek suggestions, and references to the Flying V and Steve Hanson. Paulo Dybala Argentina Jersey. "Bring the kids. We got entertainment for the whole family." Plenty of people figure the fly-by started at the World Juniors, but we cant find any examples of it before 1991. In Red Deer in 1995, Team Canada was doing the fly-by in its current form: all five players skating by the bench. Before that, the video evidence is less compelling. There are solid signs of it at the 94 and 93 tournaments. In 92 and 91, we know that the goal-scorer on at least a few occasions did the fly-by, though in most cases we cant tell if his teammates joined in, and in some cases we know they did not. (As in this goal by Paul Kariya, for example). Did it start with the Montreal Canadiens? For a brief time, the Habs bench would empty for every goal: everyone celebrating on the ice together. When a rule was implemented to end that practice, the theory goes, the team began the fly-by. Mark Napier, a Canadien from 1978-84, said no. Did it start with the Edmonton Oilers in the mid-80s? Napier (84-86 with the Oilers) said no again. As did Paul Coffey, adamantly. "Why do (the fly-by)? Whats the point? Just celebrate with the guys on the ice, and go line up." That sounds suspiciously like Jester talking to Maverick: "Get your butts above the hard deck and return to base immediately." Maybe I should revisit the Top Gun theory. At this point, I got a tip that the fly-by started in Moose Jaw in the mid-to-late 80s. Lorne Molleken – an assistant coach in his first season with Moose Jaw in 89 – remembers it. He thinks. "What sticks out in my mind is moreso the players high-fiving the fans," said Molleken. The Moose Jaw Civic Centre – or the Crushed Can – had unusually low glass beside the benches, says Molleken, and at some point players got the fans involved in goal celebrations. "We came out of our end and there were piles of kids hanging over the glass," recalled Scott Reid, who played in Moose Jaw from 88-90. "No one else was doing it at the time that I can remember." "Wed do our whole bench and fans from the bench to the hash mark," said Jerome Bechard, a Warrior from 85-90. "We probably skated 20 or 25 feet." But not everyone shares that memory. "I dont remember that," said Theo Fleury, who played four seasons in Moose Jaw. "You just didnt do that," said Fleury, laughing. "If you wanted to start a brawl, you did it." Fleurys last season with the Warriors was 87/88, which means the earliest the fly-by was a thing in Moose Jaw is the following season, 88/89: the same time it was probably happening in Peterborough, and the same time it definitely sort-of happened by seasons end in the Memorial Cup final. Clear as mud. Which brings us to the oddest and most intriguing theory of all: the fly-by was born on a French Canadian television drama about a fictional Quebec City hockey team. Lance et Compte (which roughly translates as He shoots, he scores) aired from 1986 to 1989 in its first incarnation, and, sure enough, theres the fly-by in Season 1, Episode 5, albeit with just the one skater and not the full team. "I remember that the director at the time wanted that shot because it was easy to shoot," says Rejean Tremblay, who wrote on the show. "One camera, five guys skating in front of the beach, you could make it in less than ten minutes." Is it possible that the origin of the fly-by was the brainchild of a cost-conscious French Canadian director? It seems unlikely, but really, its about as likely as anything else. ' ' '

Joe Smith, the seventh Angels pitcher, tossed a perfect ninth for his second save in two nights against his former teammates after he was thrust into the closers role last Friday in place of an ineffective Ernesto Frieri. Corey Kluber (2-3) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and four hits over 4 2-3 innings with five strikeouts and four walks. The right-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, retiring Albert Pujols on a popup after an intentional walk to Mike Trout and then striking out Raul Ibanez with the Indians trailing 2-0. The Angels put runners at the corners in the fifth with the help of a successful replay challenge by manager Mike Scioscia, after first base umpire Gabe Morales ruled J.B. Shuck out on a potential double-play grounder to second base that was corrected to a fielders choice. Shuck stole second, and Kendrick chased Kluber with a two-run single to centre for a 4-0 lead after a walk to Collin Cowgill. That was the only official at-bat for the Angels second baseman, who got plunked by Klubers second pitch of the game, had a sacrifice bunt in the fourth and walked in the seventh. Kendrick became the fifth player Scioscia has started in the leadoff spot. It was the 12th time Kendrick has started there in his nine-year career, the rest coming in 2010. He is 13 for 47 with two homers, 10 RBIs, four walks and eight runs scored when starting atop the lineup, and the Angels are 9-3 in those games. Santana, who hit a three-run homer in Monday nights series-opening 6-3 loss, got the Indians off the mat in the sixth with his two-run shot to right field after a single by Mike Aviles. Michael Brantley then snapped an 0-for-17 drought with a double and went to third on a single by Asdrubal Cabrera that chased Weaver. But Michael Kohn struck out Yan Gomes with the bases loaded after a two-out walk to David Murphy and a visit from pitching coach Mike Butcher. Yoslan Herrera gave way to Nick Maronde with the bases loaded and none out in the Cleveland seventh, and Santana drew a four-pitch walk that forced home a run. Brantley followed with a sacrifice fly that cut the Angels lead to 5-4 and brought in Kevin Jepsen, who struck out Cabrera and retired Jason Giambi on a deep fly. Aviles took over at second base in the fourth for Kipnis, who left with an abdominal strain on his right side after grounding into a double play. NOTES: Ibanez was the only player on the Angels roster that Kluber had faced before. ... Shuck ended a career-worst 0-for-22 drought with a hit-and-run single in the fourth. ... Weaver has pitched 873 innings and faced 3,492 batters since his last intentional walk on Sept. 4, 2009, at Kansas City. ... Cabrera and Santana had two-out bunt singles in the second and fourth, respectively. ... The Indians demoted Wednesdays scheduled starter, RHP Carlos Carrasco, to the bullpen with an 0-3 record and a 6.95 ERA in four outings. RHP Zach McAllister will start on three days rest for the first time in his career after throwing 75 pitches over five innings Saturday in a loss at San Francisco. Dru Samia Vikings Jersey . PHILADELPHIA - Ask coaches and GMs about Cyle Larin and theyll tell you hes a big talent with a big future. As much as Im going to miss him as a player, if you want the truth Im going to miss him more as a guy. Hes a very good guy.Hes a terrific lad, first and foremost, echoed Canadian under-20 coach Rob Gale. Hes a very level-headed kid.Orlando City SC has first crack Thursday at the six-foot-two 190 pounder from Brampton, Ont. Fellow expansion team New York City FC picks second, ahead of the Montreal Impact, San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers. With three picks in the first round — sixth, ninth and 11th — Toronto FC will be an active player whether it opts to trade some of its selections or not.The Vancouver Whitecaps pick 13th. Its the lowest selection the team has had since joining MLS and, with five picks in the third and fourth rounds, the Whitecaps will be looking for some diamonds in the rough. The first two rounds go Thursday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Rounds 3 and 4 will be done by telephone Jan. 20. Larin will learn his future before Canadas game against El Salvador on Thursday at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He has already won three caps under Benito Floro for the senior national side and is still kicking himself for a missed scoring opportunity against third-ranked Colombia.I rushed the shot, he lamented. This season, he won AAC Offensive Player of the Year honours with a conference-best 0.56 goals a game.Canadian MLS team officials speak as one when Larins name is raised.Exceptional talent, said Toronto FC GM Tim Bezbatchenko. He obviously has talent, added Vancouver Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi. There was speculation Larin would enter the draft after his freshman year. But he wanted to prolong his college experience — at least for another season. He made up his mind last October, after coming in the 82nd minute of Canadas game against Colombia at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.That just opened my eyes and I knew I wanted to leave that year, Larin said. That was the decision right there.Larin, who trained briefly with clubs in Belgium and Germany, mulled over going back to Europe but decided the MLS was the best place to begin his pro career. He is diplomatic about where he might end up.Going No. 1 is always nice, he said. New York or Orlando would be nice.Receiving passes from Frank Lampard or Kaka would be fun, admitted Larin — a Chelsea fan who counts veteran Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba as another of his favourite players. There are no nerves, just excitement. Polite and soft-spoken, Larin says his goal in his MLS rookie season is to do my best and hopefully help out the team and see where it takes me. Larin can play as a forward or tucked in behind a striker and likes both roles. He is fast, deft at controlling the ball and has vision — able to pick out a teammate with a pass. His tool box is full. His college coach sees him flourishing at centre forward.Hes mobile, he can get out to the flanks. Good with his back to the goal, said Reid. Hes dangerous in the box.Reid says the best is yet to come.I think Cyles just scratching the surface, he said. Hes athletic, hes a wonderful kid, hes got talent. But hes still young. Hes still learning how to use it every day, how to be ready mentally every day. Physically, hes a work in progress. But hes got a lot of talent. Hes got a huge up-side if he can get it right. Reid knows his stuff. In his 18 years at the UConn helm, he has seen 32 of his players taken in MLS draft. Thirteen of those went in the first round with Chris Gbandi (2002) and goalkeeper Andre Blake (2014) going first overall.Reid, who recorded his 400th coaching win last October, is to be honoured Thursday as 2014 NSCAA East Regional Coach of the Year on Thursday as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America national convention in Philadelphia.Gale has also mentored Larin, helping him deal with the hype. Gale is quick to note that on his team Larin is one of 20.Were very realistic as a staff in that the lad is a talented boy but he has yet to go through the test of professional football ... Theres no doubt hes a talented footballer. Hes got great feet, he can finish. So the tools are there. But these next couple of years are going to be a great test for the lad, he added.Larin wore No. 9 as a youngster, switching to No. 10 at college. Asked what number hell wear as a pro, he shows a measure of his maturity.Im going to have to earn that, to try to get the number I want, he said. Larin enters the draft as one of five underclassmen with Generation Adidas contracts. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. Frank Kaminsky Hornets Jersey . This week, they discuss the NBAs fine on the Toronto Raptors, the ice bucket challenge, Candlestick Park and Jimmy Grahams reaction to the NFLs goal-post no dunking" rule. Bruce Arthur, Toronto Star My thumb is up to the $25,000 tampering fine that the NBA levied against the Toronto Raptors this week. The fine came after the rapper Drake, the teams unpaid but omnipresent global ambassador, spotted league MVP Kevin Durant in the crowd during a Toronto concert and all but openly recruited him with the aid of a chanting crowd. So, the team received the fine, and its about time. Drake is popular in NBA circles, and you can bet hes talked to guys like Durant off-stage, too. In the NBA, the best players choose their destinations, and even if the NBA insists they never asked for Drakes removal as ambassador, that makes him sound like a threat, right? Which, he may yet be. And finally, with this fine, the Raptors have at least paid something for his services. Steve Simmons, Sun Media My thumb is up to the ice bucket challenge, the charitable campaign inspired and enhanced by social media that has worked so well to raise money for the dreadful disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease. Suddenly, in recent days weve seen the likes of Sidney Crosby, Gary Bettman, Henrik Lundqvist, P.K. Subban from the hockey world and other athletes and celebrities dumping a bucket of ice over their head inspiring donations worldwide, the likes of which we have never seen before. A year ago this timeframe, ALS had raised $32,000 in a two-week period. Since the ice bucket challenge began, the brainchild of former college baseball player and ALS sufferer Peter Frates, more than $5.5 million has been pledged. Sometimes a simple idea, for all the right reasons, with the aid of social media, can go an awfully long way. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated My thumb is up to memories of San Franciscos Candlestick Park, the 54-year-old stadium whose swan song was sung this week at a concert by Paul McCartney. It was fitting Sir Paul closed the place considering the Beatles gave their last live performance there, in 1966. Candlestick chilled the body. Giants fans wore parkas in June. But it often warmed the sporting soul. This was hallowed ground where Willie Mays roamed center field and Joe Montana connected with Dwight Clark on "the catch." The Stick held up well, especially during the 89 World Series as I sat worriedly in the auxiliary press box during the Loma Prieta earthquake. For that, and for everything, thanks. Dave Hodge, TSN My thumb is down to Jimmy Graham, the New Orleans Saints standout tight end, who is probably the best at his position in the NFL, even better than the grown-ups. Graham is responsible for the so-called "goal-post no dunking" rule because he went too far and managed to bend a goal post. Well, he hates the rule, has vowed to protest it by ignoring it, which he did twice after touchdowns on Friday night. Now, you can call it the "no fun league," you can say that pre-season games arent to be taken too seriously and that unsportsmanlike penalties after touchdowns are no big deal, but if you play for Saints coach Sean Payton, who was suspended for a year by the NFL, you do not show up the league because you know your coach - any coach, I guess - will tear into you. Thats what Payton did and Graham yelled back and a sideline shouting match ensued, during kindergarten. The Whitecaps lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with a diamond midfield, with two changes from the previous match; Matias Laba returned from suspension and Kenny Miller started the match, replacing Kekuta Manneh and Sebastian Fernandez in the starting XI. The Galaxy lined up with the same lineup and formation that took the pitch the previous week, matching Vancouvers 4-4-2 midfield diamond. The Game The Galaxy have for many years been the standard by which every team in MLS is judged. They are well organized, tactically disciplined and, in Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan, have two of the most dynamic attacking players in the league. Bruce Arena is arguably the best coach in MLS and he showed his pedigree with his game plan against Vancouver. The Galaxy encouraged the Whitecaps to have the ball at the back, and as soon as either of Vancouvers central defenders - Jay DeMerit of Andy OBrien - had the ball, LA applied immediate pressure. This disrupted the Whitecaps, as they werent able to effectively move the ball out of the back. When the Galaxy were in possession, both Keane and Donovan dropped into midfield when the opportunity arose. This encouraged Baggio Husidic, Stefan Ishizaki and Marcelo Sarvas to make penetrating runs from midfield, which caused Vancouver problems defensively. Far too often, Russell Teibert and Gershon Koffie were narrow defensively, leaving too much space for the Galaxy to exploit in wide areas. This was the case when the Galaxy opened the scoring in the first half. Matias Laba vacated his central position to put pressure on Galaxy fullback, Dan Gargan, who had acres of space on the right flank to deliver a cross to the back post. Labas enthusiasm meant the Whitecaps had no midfield presence in the penalty area to deal with Ishizaki or Donovan, who had drifted into midfield. The lack of midfield defensive cover meant that the Whitecaps were outnumbered in their own penalty area when the ball was delivered. Defensively, the back four were culpable for not dealing with the cross from Gargan, as well as for not marking effectively in the penalty area. When Husidic headed the ball back across goal, every Whitecaps defender got caught ball watching, with Ishizaki lurking near the penalty spot. Given that Laba was out of position on the left - and no other midfielder slid in to cover his defensive responsibilities, Ishizaki was left with a free header from six yards out to open the scoring. Worryingly for Vancouver, Donovan was also in a prime scoring position, completely unmarked. A series of defensive mistakes that individually, might not prove costly. But collectively, these mistakes lead to goals being conceded. At the halftime break, Robinson made a bold move - which proved to be the correct one - by making two substitutions. Jonny Leveron and Kekuta Manneh came into the match, replacing Andy OBrien and Russell Teibert. Leveron immediately improved Vancouvers ability to move the ball out of the back and into midfield, and Manneh provided an attacking threat that was missing in the first half. This threat was further amplified when Erik Hurtado replaced the largely ineffective Pedro Morales part way through the second half. Both Manneh and Hurtado stretched the Galaxy back line with their speed and direct play. It was Hurtados forward run that played a role in Darren Mattocks equalizer, and after Robbie Keane had put the Galaxy back in front, it wass Manneh who drove home Vancouvers second tying goal. Cody Zeller Jersey. The Whitecaps deserve credit for building a squad of players rather than just focusing on improving their starting eleven. In every game this season, Vancouver have had options on the bench that could change the game, and Saturdays game was an example of how Robinson used those options effectively. There will be many fans calling for Manneh - who was Player of the Match in my eyes for his 45-minute performance - to get a run of games in the starting lineup now. But those fans need to be careful what they wish for. The biggest challenge that all young players face is finding a level of consistency from game to game. Manneh faces this same challenge, and despite his bright performance against the Galaxy (as well as a good performance as a substitute against Chivas USA in the second week of the season), I feel that Robinson is doing the right thing by keeping the reins on Manneh as a first team regular. It is far better to have a player succeed in the long-term, rather than to have him fizzle out because he was rushed into the first team. The Positives One of the criticisms levied against former head coach Martin Rennie was that he could be indecisive. Many felt that Rennie waited too long in games to make his substitutions, thus reducing the impact of the players he brought on to change the game. This criticism cannot be levied against Robinson. The first-year coach made a bold move taking off OBrien and Teibert at the half. Robinson also altered Vancouvers tactical approach during the second half, changing their 4-4-2 midfield diamond to a more conventional 4-4-2, with the central midfielders operating as double pivots. Both Manneh and Hurtado were bright spots for Vancouver in the second half, as was Leveron. Defenders get paid to prevent goals, but the Hondurans ability on the ball is what Robinson is looking for from his central defenders when the Whitecaps are in possession. Because of this, Leveron will be first choice for Robinson in that position in the long-term, and could very likely replace DeMerit or OBrien in Vancouvers starting lineup for their next match against Real Salt Lake (Saturday, April 26, 9:30pm ET, 6:30pm PT, TSN). The Negatives Defensively, there were all kinds of problems for the Whitecaps on both of the Galaxys goals. For starters, Vancouver was very narrow in midfield and never got to grips with the problems caused by the movement from Keane and Donovan. This gave the Galaxy the freedom of the flanks, which allowed for uncontested delivery into the penalty area on both goals. At the back, the partnership of Jay DeMerit and Andy OBrien is fraught with issues. Neither player is especially quick, but their experience should be enough to see them cope with this handicap. But as neither player has Leverons technical ability or passing range, the Whitecaps are hamstrung when it comes to playing the ball out of defence when they are paired together. This puts immense pressure on Vancouvers midfielders, as their opposite numbers know that if Vancouver are going to get the ball forward, it will have to come through midfield. The Star Man At just 19 years of age, it is tempting to think of what kind of player Kekuta Manneh is going to be when he matures. He is quick, skillful, direct and not afraid to shoot the ball - all qualities one looks for in an attacking player. Manneh made a dramatic impact for Vancouver when he was introduced at the start of the second half. He terrorized the Galaxy defenders, and it was fitting that it was his strike that brought the Whitecaps back on level terms. ' ' '

Julia Lipnitskaia of Russia was second with 192.07 points followed by Ashley Wagner of the United States with 187.61. "It was my first time to do two triple axels in the long program," Asada said. Root picked up two wickets in the World T20 final against West Indies Obviously when you get to a final its all about winning, Root told Sky Sports News HQ, live from a golf day at Woburn with fellow England internationals Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad.Unfortunately we were unable to do that but the effort we put in and the experience we have gained from that is going to stand us in great stead moving forward. A lot of guys have gained a lot of confidence and hopefully we can take that forward into an exciting summer of Test cricket.Weve had a pretty successful winter with winning away in South Africa and getting to the final of the Twenty20 World Cup and there are a lot of exciting young players that are putting their name forward for selection for this Test series. And then when the ODIs kick in, hopefully we can take that form forward from the Twenty20 into that. Joe Root and Ben Stokes took part in an impromptu bit of street cricket in Londons Carnaby Street Root confirmed his first match since the World T20 will be the County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire, live and exclusive on Sky Sports on May 1.With the season already underway, Middlesex opener Sam Robson has staked his claim for an England place after plundering 337 in two innings against Warwickshire, setting a new Middlesex record for runs scored in a first-class game. Alastair Cook is now wearing an ECB-compliant helmet The great thing about the County Championship and this time of the season is that it is a great opportunity for the guys to put their hands up and give themselves the best chance for the selectors to pick them, Root added. As part of the side thats what you want to see - guys scoring runs, taking wickets and putting you under pressure. Seeing the depth that weve got as a country, hopefully that will stand u in good stead and keep everyone looking to improve and take our side forward. Sam Robson has caught the eye in the opening weeks of the County Championship season There has been widespread debate over the newly-introduced British Safety Standard compliant helmets after the ECB grilled Test captain Alastair Cook when he persisted with wearing the old style headgear.Cook hit 127 not out in Essexs draw with Sussex on Wednesday while wearing the new-style helmet and Root thinks it is now time to draw a line under the issue. Stuart Broad says he understands why Alastair Cook refused to wear the new helmet at the start of the cricket season The rules are the rules and you have to get over it now, he said.Theres no point moaning about it. Thats whats happened and its obviously going to be a little frustrating for a few guys who have been used to playing in a certain way and stuff but if thats the way its got to go, we have to get to grips with it pretty quickly. Its good to see Alastair go and do that [score an unbeaten century] and it wont take him long to adjust even though it must be quite frustrating if youve been used to that for your whole career. But its time to move on I suppose if they are the laws that are going to be put in place. The most important number was the 5-1 victory the Hawks put up against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday afternoon that extended their winning streak to three games. Toews linemate Patrick Sharp did get a goal with the help of an assist by Marion Hossa, so it wasnt as if the teams top line was shut out of the action. "As a line, maybe we didnt get too much going," said Toews, who had nine points in the previous five games, including a natural hat trick on Tuesday. "We didnt get that puck control we wanted to throughout three periods, but a nice play by Hossa on Sharpys goal there." Hossa had stolen the puck and sprung Sharp on a breakaway. He deked in front of goalie Ondrej Pavelec and fired a low shot on the glove side at 2:41 that made it 3-1. Sharps goal was the second of three straight the Blackhawks (9-2-3) scored in the first six minutes of the second period. Corey Crawford stopped 26 shots in picking up his eighth win of the season. Defencemen Niklas Hjalmarsson and Nick Leddy and forwards Brandon Bollig and Ben Smith also scored. Marcus Kruger had a pair of assists and Leddy and Bollig also picked up an assist each for the Blackhawks, who are 4-1-1 on the road this season. Defenceman Tobias Enstrom scored at 5:08 of the first period for Winnipeg (5-8-2), which has lost three straight. Hjalmarrson tied it 1-1 after Kruger cleanly won the face off and sent him the puck. His goal spoiled an impressive penalty kill for Winnipeg. Fans had just given the Jets a standing ovation for killing off a 21-second two-man advantage, but just one second after the final penalty expired, Hjalmarrson fired a high shot from just inside the blue line that went through traffic at 9:58. Bollig, Sharp and Leddy scored their goals in a span of three minutes and 55 seconds, and after Chicago only had four shots on goal in the period. "I thought we played really well and then all of a sudden it was 3-1," Jets captain Andrew Ladd said. "And then you maybe get outside your game a little bit and try doing things to catch up and dig a deep hole." Jets coach Claude Noel viewed Sharps goal as the dagger. "I thought that was a play that really killed our team," Noel said. It was the Jets biggest margin of defeat this season. They had lost 4-1 to Dallas Oct. 11. Pavelec was replaced by Al Montoya after Leddys goal at 5:49 of the second made it three in a row. Pavelec had stopped 10 of 14 shots at that point. Montoya faced 11 shots in his stint. L.J. Collier Jersey. Noel wasnt blaming Pavelec for not bailing the team out this time. "Before it gets to him, theres sometimes breakdowns elsewhere," Noel said. Crawford said he saw most of the 27 shots the Jets sent his way. "I think most of their situations were crashing the net on the wing," he said. "A couple I had to fight for through screens but most of them, a couple of rebounds there, our guys were able to clear after." Enstroms second goal of the season came during a week in which he revealed that hed told Team Sweden he wouldnt suit up for the squad if asked to play in next years Olympic Games because he wanted to focus on playing well for the Jets. Chicago had a bit of a scare with 65 seconds left in the first when Crawford was knocked down by Blake Wheeler, who was coming in fast with the puck. Crawford was slow to get up, but remained in the game and said later he didnt remember getting his bell rung. While he was getting looked at, the jumbotron zoomed in on Blackhawks backup goalie Nikolai Khabibulin on the bench and a message flashed welcoming him back to Winnipeg. Chanting "Habby, Habby," fans stood to give Khabibulin a standing ovation, which he recognized with a wave of his glove from the bench. The netminder played for the original Jets in their last 1996 game before the team moved to Phoenix to become the Coyotes. Patrick Kane almost added to Chicagos lead early in the third period when he was given a penalty shot after being hooked by Jets defenceman Grant Clitsome during a breakaway. Kanes backhand shot went high past Montoya, but it hit the crossbar and bounced out. In less than two minutes, Smith did change the scoreboard to 5-1 when he redirected a shot from the boards by Bollig at 9:13. There were a number of fans at MTS Centre wearing Blackhawks jersey, including some bearing the name of the Winnipeg-born Toews, Sharp and Duncan Keith, who assisted on Smiths goal. Winnipeg hosts Detroit on Monday, while Chicago is home to Calgary on Sunday and Winnipeg on Wednesday. Notes: The Jets claimed Los Angeles Kings defenceman Keaton Ellerby off waivers earlier in the day. Winnipeg has three injured blue-liners; Mark Stuart, Jacob Trouba and Paul Postma a The Blackhawks visit the White House on Monday to be recognized by U.S. President Barack Obama for their Cup title a Jets forward Michael Frolik won the Cup with Chicago last year, while Winnipeg captain Andrew Ladd and defenceman Dustin Byfuglien have championship rings from Chicagos 2010 title. LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling apologized Sunday for racist comments captured on tape, saying they were a "terrible mistake. Clayton Richard Blue Jays Jersey ." "Im not a racist," Sterling told CNNs Anderson Cooper in excerpts posted from an interview taped Sunday and set to air Monday. "I made a terrible mistake. Im here to apologize." In his first public comments since being banned for life from the NBA, Sterling said years of good behaviour as an owner should count toward his future. "Im a good member who made a mistake," Sterling said. "Am I entitled to one mistake, am I after 35 years? I mean, I love my league, I love my partners. Am I entitled to one mistake? Its a terrible mistake, and Ill never do it again." The interview came nearly two weeks after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling, fined him $2.5 million and urged the other league owners to force him to sell the team. Sterling said he waited to make a public apology because he was "emotionally distraught." "The reason its hard for me, very hard for me, is that Im wrong," Sterling said. "I caused the problem. I dont know how to correct it." He later added, "If the owners feel I have another chance, then theyll give it to me." Sterlings comments came on the same day ABC News posted excerpts of an interview his estranged wife gave to Barbara Walters. Shelly Sterling said she would fight to keep her 50 per cent ownership stake of the team. "I will fight that decision," Shelly Sterling said. "To be honest with you, Im wondering if a wife of one of the owners, and theres 30 owners, did something like that, said those racial slurs, would they oust the husband? Or would they leave the husband in? "I dont know why I should be punished for what his actions were." NBA spokesman Mike Bass released a statement Sunday night in response to Shelly Sterlings comments. "Under the NBA constitution, if a controlling owners interest is terminated by a three-quarter vote, all other team owners interests are automatically terminated as well," Bass said. "It doesnt matter whether the owners are related as is the case here. These are the rules to which all NBA owners agreed to as a condition of owning their team." Shelly Sterlings attorney, Pierce ODonnell, responded to the NBAs statement. "We do not agree with the leagues self-serving interpretation of its constitution, its application to Shelly Sterling or its validity under these unique circumstances," ODonnell said. "We live in a nation of laws. California law and the United States Constitution trump any such interpretation." ABC posted initial excerpts of Shelly Sterlings interview and planned to air the rest of it Monday. Shelly Sterling also said she "eventually" will divorce her husband, and that she hadnt yet done so due to financial considerations. "For the last 20 years, Ive been seeing attorneys for a divorce," she said. "In fact, I have here -- I just filed -- I was going to file the petition. I signed the petition for a divorce. And it came to almost being filed. And then, my financial adviser and my attorney said to me, Not now." LeBron James said Sunday after the Miami Heat practiced for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Brooklyn Nets that NBA players believe nobody in the Sterling family should be able to own the Clippers if hes gone. "As players, we want whats right and we dont feel like no one in his family should be able to own the team," James said. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Jersey .
