As a member of the Marauders, he was a first-team All-Canadian and led the country in receiving yards in 2008. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals have made a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer to free agent Carlos Beltran. They just dont expect him to return next season. General manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny met with reporters Monday for the first time since losing a six-game World Series to the Red Sox last week. Mozeliak says he expects the 36-year-old Beltran to seek a multiyear contract elsewhere. "We never want to close doors," Mozeliak said. "Reality is when you look at the depth, trying to find ample playing time, Im not sure how happy he will be." Beltran topped 600 plate appearances both seasons with the Cardinals, needing just occasional rest for his surgically repaired knees. He batted .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs this year, and had several big hits in the post-season, too. "I reminded him what an incredible season he had for us," Matheny said. "We dont know how this whole thing is going to play out." But the outfield will be crowded with Matt Adams expected to be the everyday first baseman and cleanup man Allen Craig moving to right field. Top prospect Oscar Taveras also figures to be in the mix. Mozeliak said theres a chance the payroll will be lower at the start of next season, with big contracts for Beltran, Chris Carpenter, Rafael Furcal and Jake Westbrook coming off the books. Given the right circumstances, he said the payroll could go up. At the top of the off-season wish list is an offensive upgrade at shortstop over the slick-fielding, light-hitting combo of Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso. The Cardinals expect to hear from teams interested in their prospects. "We do have the resources," Mozeliak said. "Certainly, I dont want to close any doors today." Rookie Trevor Rosenthal opens spring training as the closer ahead of Jason Motte, wholl be eased back into the mix coming off reconstructive elbow surgery that sidelined him all of 2013. Mozeliak said it was "hard to imagine" a better closer than Rosenthal the way he finished the yyear. Authentic Basketball Jerseys. . Mozeliak said rookie Kolten Wong, a first-round pick in 2011, could be the everyday second baseman. Leadoff man Matt Carpenter would move to third, displacing David Freese. "If I had a bet, I would say hes probably going to get a lot of playing time for us," Mozeliak said. Neither Matheny nor Mozeliak expressed any regrets about using post-season roster spots for rookie 15-game winner Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica, who had 35 saves before hitting the wall the final month. The Cardinals left the 22-year-old Miller out of the post-season rotation due to concerns about the innings load from a full season as the fifth starter. They wanted Miller on the roster just in case, assuring him hes a big part of next years rotation. Mujica got the nod in appreciation for services rendered, with Mozeliak noting "there is some loyalty in the decision-making process." "We were prepared, we knew what we were trying to accomplish," Matheny said. "We do what we believe is best for this team so we can go back and sleep at night and realize we did the right thing." Among the healthy arms who didnt make the cut were lefties Sam Freeman and Tyler Lyons. They could have added third catcher Rob Johnson, freeing up backup catcher Tony Cruz as a pretty good bat off the bench. "Look at Chiefs contribution," Mozeliak said, using Mujicas nickname. "I think it would have been very difficult to keep him off." The Cardinals know Rosenthal wants to be a starter but theyre loaded in that department with rookie Michael Wacha near the top of the list, right behind 19-game winner Adam Wainwright, coming off a phenomenal post-season. Also in the mix are Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn, along with youngsters Miller and Carlos Martinez, plus Matheny thought Jaime Garcia was almost ready to return from shoulder surgery at the end of the season. Mozeliak anticipates no off-season surgeries, and believes Craigs left mid-foot sprain will be healed in about a month. ' ' '

Penn States 12 non-conference wins are the most in program history, but the teams detractors will be quick to point how hollow most of the victories are as the Lions havent really beaten any team of note. Their lone setback occurred back on Nov. 20 in double-overtime versus Charlotte, and the team has won 10 straight since. The latest win was a 69-49 shellacking of Dartmouth on Dec. 22, and it will try to improve to 3-0 in true road games with a win today. Wisconsin has some victories over inferior opponents as well, but the Badgers have also beaten the likes of Boise State, Georgetown, Oklahoma, Marquette and California, Coach Bo Ryans club has won five straight since suffering its only defeat of the season, an 80-70 decision at home to Duke during the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with its most recent triumph being a 68-56 verdict versus visiting Buffalo on Sunday. Wisconsin leads the all-time series with Penn State, 31-10, and the Badgers won the most recent meeting last March, 71-66. The last 10 meetings in the series have been decided by an average of 6.6 points. The Lions have never won in the Kohl Center (0-13). As he has done in just about every game this season, D.J. Newbill led Penn State to its recent victory over Dartmouth, scoring 17 points and handing out four assists. Geno Thorpe tallied 12 points off the bench, and fellow reserve John Johnson chipped in with 10. Brandon Taylor also scored 10 points, and he came up two rebounds shy of logging a double-double for the Nittany Lions, who shot 46.9 percent from the floor and nailed seven 3-pointers. The teams defensive effort allowed the Big GGreen just 35. Clint Capela Rockets Jersey. 2 percent success from the floor, and the visitors found the bottom of the net on only 2-of-20 long-range launches. Newbill is the Big Tens top scorer, netting 21.4 ppg on the strength of his 47 percent overall shooting effort and 39.3 percent showing from beyond the arc. Taylor (10.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg) is the only other player averaging double digits for coach Patrick Chambers squad, which puts up 72 ppg while permitting just 65.3 ppg. Foes are converting only 37.8 percent of their total shots, which includes a low 30.2 percent from downtown, and the Lions are +3.2 in rebounding margin, but -1.1 in turnovers. Frank Kaminsky continued his assault on all comers this season, as he logged an impressive double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds in Wisconsins easy win over Buffalo a few days back. Sam Dekker offered support by scoring 13 points and grabbing six boards, but the Badgers shot just 42.4 percent from the field, missing 14 of their 20 3-point tries in the process. Fortunately the Bulls struggled to the tune of a .352 field goal percentage, although they hit 5-of-9 3-point attempts. Kaminsky was tabbed as the Big Tens Preseason Player of the Year, and he hasnt disappointed in averaging 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game to lead the Badgers in each category. Dekker (12.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Nigel Hayes (11.9 ppg, 7.8 rpg) both net double figures on a consistent basis for UW, which produces 73.5 ppg while allowing a league-low 52.4 ppg. The Badgers are converting their field goals at a 48.3 percent clip, while permitting the opposition to do the same just 38.1 percent of the time. Wisconsin only turns the ball over 8.6 times per outing, and sizable advantages in both rebounding (+8.2) and turnovers (+3.9) have proven instrumental in the teams overall success. ' ' '

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma didnt make any excuses for goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury a day after a stunning 4-3 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round series. David Nwaba Nets Jersey . Bylsma explained that he wasnt particularly pleased when Fleury misplayed the puck late in the third period on a sequence that allowed Brandon Dubinsky to tie the game with 24 seconds to play. "Typically the rule of thumb (when) the pucks on the glass is to stay in the net," Bylsma told reporters on Thursday. "This one was on the glass bouncing and Marc knows he should have stayed in the net." Fleury gave up the winner in overtime on a Nick Foligno wrist shot and the Penguins are tied 2-2 with Columbus heading back to Pittsburgh for Game 5. Bylsma was just as upset at the fact that Pittsburgh surrendered a 3-0 road lead in Game 4 and eventually lost the game. "The work and compete and the battle level has probably been the most troubling thing for our team," he said. Last night (to) get up three goals in the game and they were the team that worked...the most troubling, its got to be raised." Outside of goaltending, Bylsma called for more production from all of his players, including stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. "Theyre our best players," he added. "We need more from our whole team. And we need more from them." Fleury looks to get the nod in goal again on Saturday, as Bylsma said there were no injury or lineup updates to pass along before Game 5. Despite finishing 16 points ahead of the Blue Jackets in the regular season, Bylsma said he expected nothing less from his first round opponents. "We expect this to be tough, we expect it to be a tough series...were in a battle with Columbus, no matter who it is... we can go out there and win this series and move on and we know its going to be tough." Take a look at the biggest new face on each of the top divisions 20 rosters. Some teams (Chelsea) have done more and spent freer than others (Aston Villa), but everyone has at least one new name to learn. Heres the rundown of the biggest off-season additions. Important note: the transfer window remains open, so the following 20 teams are all just one move away from overshadowing everything they`ve done so far this summer. Arsenal: The Gunners liked what they saw in the World Cup, dropping 35 million pounds on Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez. The 25-year-old moves to London from a crowded Barcelona attack that completed its South American triumvirate, adding Luis Suarez to the existing dynamic duo of Lionel Messi and Neymar. Sanchez poured in 21 goals and set up an additional 15 in 54 total appearances with the Catalonians last season. The Gunners also made a solid future investment in doling out over 15 million euros for Saints defender Calum Chambers. Aston Villa: Somehow, the spendthrift Lions response to a 15th-place finish was to make money on the transfer market. The biggest name coming in is former England international Joe Cole who saw 25 games between the Premiership and the League Cup last season with West Ham. The 32-year-old missed a good spell with a hamstring injury last season, but cost the club nothing. Burnley: The Championship runners-up have marked their first Premiership appearance since 2009-10 with a couple fresh faces for the stiffer competition. The costliest of the newbies is Middleborough/Bolton striker Lukas Jutkiewicz. The 25-year-old finished admirably with the Wanderers in the Championship last season, netting seven times in 20 games on loan. Chelsea: With all due respect to the return of all-time-great Didier Drogba, the biggest impact Chelsea made this off-season was adding the very player that helped end their Champions League run last season. At 32 million quid, the Stamford Bridge faithful wont like remembering how Diego Costas season ended (seven minutes into the Champions Final derby against Real) but will welcome his 36 combined competition goals and the fact that he will lessen the teams occasional need to turn to certain other high-priced, enigmatic Spaniard. Oh, yeah, there`s also the not-so-small addition of Cesc Fabregas. Crystal Palace: The Eagles emerged like a Phoenix from a first half spent almost entirely in the relegation zone to earn their best finish since the foundation of the Premier League at 11th. So why mess with a winning-ish formula, right? Palace added few new faces for the coming season, the biggest of which coming in the form of 26-year-old striker Frazier Campbell. Palace plucked him from the Championship-bound Cardiff City. Campbell netted nine in 39 total appearances last season, but only cost 900,000 pounds. Everton: The Merseysiders look ahead to this season with the task of proving they can stay ahead of the likes of Spurs and Manchester United. The team took a step towards trying to achieve that in ensuring full-time hours out of the temporary addition that made 2013-14 such a success, Romelu Lukaku. Everton paid Chelsea 28 million pounds for the Belgian striker who scored 15 BPL goals on loan last season. The team also added some Championship pedigree with two-time Premiership winner Gareth Barry coming over from City on a free transfer. Hull: The Tigers picked off the carcass of the relegated Norwich City squad, adding 26-year-old Scottish winger Robert Snodgrass. The former Leeds captain netted seven times in 34 appearances with the Canaries last season. Keeping him in the Premiership cost the Tigers seven million pounds, while the team dropped an additional eight on giving Jake Livemore a permanent home. Leicester City: The reigning Championship, errr, champions made just one move that cost them anything this off-season, bringing in Argentine striker Leonardo Ulloa from Brighton & Hove. Ulloa has proven he can score at the secondary level, topping the Spanish Segunda Division in 2011-12 and notching 23 goals in 50 collective appearances with Brighton since 2013. The Foxes also took a shot on 19-year-old Manchester United cast-off midfielder Jack Barmby. Liverpool: Believe it or not, Liverpool wound up in the red this off-season in terms of transfer spending, despite netting 75 million quid for Luis Suarez. They used that money largely on the Benficas Lazar Markovic and a Southampton pair: midfielder Adam Lallana and defender Dejan Lovren. However, the biggest name they plucked from the Saints was also the cheapest in the form of 32-year-old striker Rickie Lambert. The Reds dont appear to be slowing their spending, either, paying up an additional 12 million pounds for Alberto Moreno on Wednesday. Manchester City: Hampered by financial fair play penalties, it seemed like the Citizens werent going to make the big splash their fans have become accustomed to. Then they went and dropped 32 million pounds on Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala. They may also have found value through a club they partly oown. Julius Erving Nets Jersey. Frank Lampard is on his way to the Big Apple with New York FC for the 2014-15 MLS season, but until that time, hell wear a lighter blue than hes used to at the Etihad, with City paying his wages while hes in Manchester. The Champs will still get six months worth out of Chelseas all-time scorer in addition to the signings of Arsenal right back Bacary Sagna and Brazilian holding midfielder Fernando. Manchester United: On the heels of their worst season in a quarter-century, United clearly identified defence as a key weakness. Out are long-standing trio Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand and in are young Saints back Luke Shaw (who will miss about a month with a hamstring) in addition to Atletico Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera. But the Red Devils seem to have their sights set on just about everyone under Louis van Gaal (Marcus Rojo being the latest high profile target linked to the Red Devils), so just Google the team daily for more possible additions until the window closes. Newcastle United: After a surprising 2013-14 season that saw Newcastle as high as fifth in the table at one point, the 10th-place club did some work on its attack this off-season adding a host of players from some of Europes top teams outside the top four leagues. In comes Ajax midfield/striker Siem de Jong, Montpellier middleman Remy Cabella, right back Daryl Janmaat, Monaco striker Emmanuel Rivière and striker Facundo Ferreyra from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. Net cost: 29 million pounds. Thats a lot of options, lets see how it shakes down on-field. Queens Park Rangers: QPR is back in the top flight after winning promotion via a playoff and Harry Redknapps approach to ensuring they stay up this time is to work on his back line. Incoming are one defender he helped get started and one he watched in his prime Premiership years. Former Spurs centre back Steven Caulker heads to QPR from Championship-bound Cardiff while Rio Ferdinand will be out of red for the first time since 2002 with the Rangers on a one-year deal. Southampton: The Saints made a lot of money this summer. Despite adding Eredivisie pair Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle and giving the net to Celtic keeper Fraser Forster, Southampton bid adieu to a lot of fixture faces. Most notable amongst those gone are Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren. The team made roughly 80 million pounds, but will it cost them a chance at repeating in the top half of the table? Stoke City: After a successful top-half finish, Stoke took a finders-keepers approach to spending this off-season, adding a pair of free transfers to complement buys on both their front and back ends. Sunderland man Phil Bardsley joins young Brazilian centre back Dionatan Teixeira while Senegalese striker Mame Diouf joins three million pound purchase Bojan Krkic up front. The 23-year-old Spanish striker is an interesting add, having previously shown goal-scoring form in his late teens and early 20s with Barcelona. Sunderland: Sunderland was another team looking for a boost from the defending champs as they paid an estimated 10 million pounds for City midfielder Jack Rodwell. Sure, he only appeared in 10 games with the club across all competitions last season, but a titles a title, no? The team looked to shore up its back line with a pair of defenders, grabbing Billy Jones from West Brom and sending Chelsea 1.5 million pounds for young Dutch national left back Patrick van Aanholt. They also grabbed a midfield addition with some experience in Wigan man Jordi Gomez. Swansea: Michu is out on loan, but the Swans were enterprising in re-shaping their attack. Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson comes over from Spurs while Ecuadorian winger Jefferson Montero should lend a hand after the club dropped 4 million pounds. Tottenham: The Spurs seemed to be in a money-making mood this off-season after seeing the departure of Jermain Defoe last season. They made a combined 12 million pounds off the exits of midfielders Jake Livemore (who heads to Hull) and Iago Falque (who moves to Genoa). The middle of the pitch got further depleted with the aforementioned exit of Sigurdsson. In are MLS defender DeAndre Yedlin and Lisbon backliner Eric Dier while the team picked up Michel Vorm from the Swans. West Brom: West Brom added presence to its forward ranks, dropping a reported club-record 10 million pounds on Nigerian Brown Ideye. The 25-year-old has spent the last three seasons with Dynamo Kyiv and has been given the number 9. The Baggies also brought in Joleon Lescott on free transfer from Man City. The England international collected his silverware with the Citizens last season and was promptly given his walking papers. Lescotts bound to get more playing time with West Brom, so it will be interesting to see what the 31-year-old left back can bring to the pitch. West Ham: Enner Valencia turned some heads with his three-goal output for Ecuador at the 2014 World Cup, and one of those, apparently, was Hammers boss Sam Allardyce. A sum of 12 million pounds got the forward out of Mexico and into the Premier League. The team also dropped seven million on Senegalese midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate while cutting ties with veteran Joe Cole. ' ' '

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Cam Atkinson believes the Columbus Blue Jackets are getting better. But hes also realizes just how far they have to go. "We got a little taste of what we wanted in making the playoffs," the 24-year-old winger said the day after the Blue Jackets were eliminated in Game 6 of their wild first-round series with the Pittsburgh Penguins. "We just won two games. Its a stepping stone." For years an NHL doormat, the Blue Jackets are both inspired and also realistic after the best season in the franchises mostly rocky 13 seasons. "I heard on the radio the other day that Game 4 is one of the great sports moments in this city," forward Mark Letestu said, referring to a three-goal comeback at home that was capped by a last-minute tying goal in regulation and Nick Folignos overtime winner. "I think theres a lot more that we can give. We can give series victories and further cement the Blue Jackets in the hearts of people here. Thats whats on guys minds right now." It was a season of firsts for the Blue Jackets, who have spent much of their existence toward the bottom of the NHL standings. They set club records with 43 regular-season wins, 21 road victories, 93 points and 231 goals. They had made the playoffs just once previously and their stay lasted only four games, all losses. But one of the leagues youngest teams overcame a 5-10-0 start with a strong finish to clinch a playoff spot. Then, they won Games 2 and 4 against the Penguins with stirring comebacks. In Monday nights Game 6, they were outclassed early and trailed 4-0 heading into the final period before scoring three goals in a 4:52 span to energize a crowd of 19,189 that stood and roared throughout the final minutes. The 4-3 defeat left them disappointed, but most will likely only remember the Jackets scrambling at the finish for a possible tying goal while the Penguins struggled to hold them off. "The building was rocking," defenceman Jack Johnson said. "But theres going to be a lot more and better times ahead." Beyond everything else they accomplished, they gave ttheir patient followers some hope. Los Angeles Angels Store. Over their past 111 games, the Blue Jackets are 62-37-12 -- far and away the best such span in the franchises history, and exceeded by only seven other teams in the league. "Its been great to see where we came from halfway through last season to where we are now and how excited the city gets," said fourth-line centre Derek MacKenzie, an unrestricted free agent this summer. "Weve already talked about that. What would it be like if we could have a great start? Is that arena going to be like that all season long? We sure hope so." The Blue Jackets poor history has become, well, old news. "Everybody hears about the past," said rookie defenceman Ryan Murray, taken No. 2 in the 2012 draft. "It hasnt been very good. Everybody thats here now just wants to change that, to change the culture and bring in more fans and change the city into a hockey town." Judging from the capacity crowds down the stretch and in the playoffs, and the excitement generated around this city of 787,000. For the past few weeks, the Blue Jackets have been the talk of the town, pulling off a rare coup by bumping Ohio State football off the front page of the local newspaper. Now that the Blue Jackets have stamped themselves as a good team, the hard part is getting better. "I dont think were going to catch anybody by surprise anymore," defenceman James Wisniewski said. "Everybody realizes the identity that weve created here, that its going to be a hard-fought game and that theyre going to have to bring their A game or were going to run them out of the building." Many of the Blue Jackets had already shaved off their playoff beards before meetings with the coaching staff on Tuesday morning. Several of the younger players were barely able to grow one. So now a team that didnt know what it was missing when it didnt make the playoffs is disappointed that it has been eliminated. "Ill be watching (the playoffs) for sure," Atkinson said. "What else is there to do now? You wish you could be playing." ' ' '

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Rangers Jerseys 2019 .Va. -- Jonas Blixts memory of raising the trophy last year carried over to a strong start at the Greenbrier Classic. The defending champion shot a 6-under 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over former Stanford star Patrick Rodgers and seven others at Old White TPC. Blixt tied for second in the Masters but missed the cut in three of his last four starts. Returning to The Greenbrier resort brought him back to a comfort zone. Starting on the 10th hole in the morning with little wind, Blixt had six birdies on his front nine and made the turn at 5 under. Six of the Swedes eight birdies came on putts of 10 feet or less. He also chipped in from the rough for birdie on No. 16. "The golf course is in perfect shape, like last year," Blixt said. "You come back with a bunch of confidence knowing that you won here before. "If I can get my putter to work the way it did today, I felt like I hit the ball on line every time, and it could be a really good week." Rodgers is looking to make his third straight cut since turning pro. He holed a 118-yard wedge for eagle on the par-4 first hole -- his 10th hole of the day. After the round, he was back on the driving range. "Being a new pro out here, youre always trying to figure out and establish your routines," Rodgers said, "and mine is just kind of cool down after the round and working on the things I felt like I can improve, and hopefully be ready for tomorrow." Also at 65 under were Chris Kirk, D.A. Points, James Hahn, Jason Bohn, Joe Durant, Jim Renner and Danny Lee. Steve Stricker, who has wife Nicki carrying his bag this week, was among eight player at 66. Jimmy Johnson, his regular caddie, was already scheduled to carry Chris Kirks bag when Stricker became a late entry at The Greenbrier. Stricker is playing only his eighth tour event this year. Hell compete again next week at John Deere and is leaning against going to the British Open unless he has one or more high finishes before then. "Well just keep plugging along and see what happens," Stricker said. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson played alongside Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson, getting a close-up view as he contemplates his three captains picks for the Sept. 26-28 event at Gleneagles in Scotland. "The Ryder Cups a long way in the distance," Watson said. "Im watching other people as well. Its fun to be out here to get to know the young players a little bit better." Watson took a similar approach in April, playing with Jordan Spieth at the RBC Heritage and Patrick Reed at Augusta National. Watson has said he would use a wild-card pick on Tiger Woods if hes healthy and playing well, leaving all sorts of possibilities with the other two picks. Simpson, who shot 71 on Thursday, is 17th in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings and Bradley, who shot 67, is 18th. Others ahead of them in the Greenbrier Classic field are Kirk at No. 11, Brendon Todd at No. 13 and Kevin Na at No. 15. The top nine get automatic berths on the U.S. squad. Reed, also in the Greenbrier field, is at No. 9, while Phil Mickelson, not playing this week, is 10th. "Youd think that one round or two rounds wouldnt determine us being on the team. That would be kind of silly," Bradley said. "It doesnt hurt to play well. Put it that way." Bubba Watson, the top-ranked player in the field at No. 3 in the world, had a 68. Only two rounds of 65 or better came during the afternoon when the wind picked up and the greens became more firm. "I wish I could guess the wind differently, but otherwise it was a good day," Watson said. Cheap Rangers Jerseys . -- Jerry Rice Jr. Wholesale Rangers Jerseys . The Crimson Tide coach was asked Wednesday about an Associated Press report regarding his agents conversation in January about possibly replacing Mack Brown at Texas. Sabans agent, Jimmy Sexton, indicated that the coach would consider leaving Tuscaloosa for the Texas job during a January phone call, according to an email sent by former Texas Regent Tom Hicks. "Sexton confirmed that UT is the only job Nick would possibly consider leaving Alabama for, and that his success there created special pressure for him," Hicks wrote of a call involving Sexton, himself and current Regent Wallace Hall. BOSTON -- David Ortizs line drive sailed just beyond Torii Hunters reach and into the Boston bullpen, sending the Tigers right fielder flopping headfirst over the wall after it. Tyler Herro Jersey . With one swing, the Red Sox slugger turned everything upside-down. Ortizs grand slam erased an eighth-inning deficit and ended Detroits unprecedented run of pitching dominance, and Jonny Gomes scampered around the bases with the game-winning run in the ninth Sunday night to give Boston a 6-5 victory over Detroit and knot the AL championship series at one game apiece. "Thats what he does. Hes an amazing hitter," said Max Scherzer, who took a no-hitter and a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning but could only watch as the Detroit relievers blew it. "Hes an amazing post-season hitter. Hes clutch. Any given moment, a swing of the bat he can always take you deep." One night after Anibal Sanchez and four relievers came within two outs of the first combined post-season no-hitter in baseball history, Scherzer struck out 13 and held Boston hitless for 5 2-3 innings. But the Red Sox loaded the bases against three relievers in the eighth and then closer Joaquin Benoit came in to face Ortiz. The Red Sox designated hitter lined the first pitch into the glove of the Red Sox bullpen catcher. Hunter went down hard and came out only after his teammates had waved for the Detroit medical staff to come out and help him. "I jumped up. I thought I had a beat on it," said Hunter, who came up in the Minnesota Twins organization with Ortiz and remains friends with the Red Sox slugger. "Next thing, I know Im falling over the fence." The fans waited until the trainers verified that Hunter was OK to start chanting, "Papi!" and call Ortiz out of the dugout for a curtain call. It was the first career post-season grand slam for a star of the 2004 playoff run that ended in Bostons first World Series title in 86 years. "The guys an actor at work," Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino said. "Its fun to watch. Its great to see. Hes always upbeat and always positive. He always likes to go up and swing the bat. Thats what he always wants to do." Koji Uehara pitched a perfect ninth for the win. Rick Porcello gave up a leadoff infield single that left Gomes at second when shortstop Jose Iglesias threw the ball into the Boston dugout. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a foul popup that glanced off first baseman Prince Fielders glove when he got tangled up with a fan. Gomes moved to third on a wild pitch, and then Saltalamacchia hit one through the drawn-in infield to drive in the game-winner. "Its playoff baseball," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Looked like we had one in hand and we let one get away, theres no question about that. But there have been two great games." Bostons comeback came a few hours after Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass with 5 seconds left to complete the New England Patriots comeback over the New Orleans Saints. The score was greeted with cheers by Red Sox fans waiting for the baseball game to start. Game 3 of the ALCS is in Detroit 3 on Tuesday, when Justin Verlander will face Bostons John Lackey. "We need it, man. We need start some momentum going on," Ortiz said. "The whole regular season, you havent seen a team shutting us down for 14, 15 straight innings like they have the past couple of days. If you look at the way theyve been pitching, (its) unbelievable. Its up to us make an adjustment." Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered off Clay Buchholz as Detroit scored four in the sixth inning to open a 5-0 lead. The Red Sox got one in the bottom half but were four outs from falling behind 0-2 in the series when Ortiz tied it. Scherzer, who led the majors with 21 wins, did not allow a hit until Victorino singled to left with two outs in the sixth. It was an unprecedented third consecutive playoff game in which a Tigers starter took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. That had never been done even twice in a row before this years Detroit staff, which boasts the AL ERA leader, the major league leader in wins and the 2011 AL Cy Young winner and MVP. "Scherzer was terrific. He was spent," Leyland said. "Last night our bullpen was flawless, and tonight it just wasnt quite as good." In his first career ALCS start, Buchholz allowed five runs on eight hits in 5 2-3 innings while striking out six. One night after Jon Lester absorbed a 1-0 loss, Buchholz kept the Red Sox in the game despite allowing three straight hits in the second and spotting Detroit to a 1-0 lead. But Cabrera hit a solo shot off the light tower above the Green Monster in the sixth, then Fielder lined a double off the left-field wall. Victor Martinez followed with an RBI double to right-centre and Avila hit a two-run shot over the Tigers bullpen to make it 5-0. Scherzer continued to coast, striking out at least one batter in every inning. The favourite for the AL Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in the regular season, Scherzer allowed one run on two hits and two walks before leaving after seven innings with a 5-1 lead. "We want to make sure that the officials are as prepared as they can be," Glen Johnson said Wednesday. "Were improving all of our training and development efforts. Were trying to evaluate them more consistently. Were going to make officials accountable for their performance." He said those who perform the best on the field will work the most, and the evaluation wont just include the usual crop of retired officials but will also include selected groups of coaches asked to provide feedback. Johnson spent 24 years as a referee and head referee in the league before being appointed to this new position in December. The leagues board of governors will be voting May 8 on proposed new rules this season and Johnson is currently touring all CFL cities to meet with teams and discuss those as well as other issues, such as a move to codify infractions more clearly in simple language. He said officials, players and coaches will know with more certainty what is and what isnt going to draw a flag. The proposed rule change that has drawn the most attention so far is a plan to make defensive pass interference subject to challenge and review by video replay but Johnson says there are many more. "Theres player-safety related ones where were eliminating some illegal low blocks. I think thats going to have a really positive impact on the game. Keeping players safe and healthy and having them play more is a good thing." Others are designed to improve game flow, such as not stopping to allow defensive substitutions if theere are no offensive substitutions. Custom Miami Heat Jerseys. . "I think youre going to see a higher tempo," says Johnson. "Youre going to see more offensive output and more plays in a game, which I think just continues to add to our exciting game." Many quarterbacks in the league also may be happy with a proposal to allow them to use their own teams balls. "Were going to allow quarterbacks to condition and use their own footballs. . . Theyll be league-supplied footballs that they can condition, practice with during the week then they can bring them to the game and, as long as they meet a new ball standard, that quarterback can use his own balls during the game." As an example, he said some like to remove the new-ball finish while others may like to use a tack cloth on their ball. They must still be inspected by the referee to ensure they havent been doctored beyond league standards, but both teams will have their balls stamped so they remain separate during the game. The host team will supply balls for kicks that both teams will use. There will also be stricter curbs on taunting and objectionable conduct, including the verbal abuse of officials. Besides making pass interference subject to coaches challenge and review, there will be automatic reviews of all turnovers. The leagues board of governors must vote on all the proposed changes but Johnson says, historically, they have usually given their approval. But the one that did not get approved unanimously by the rules committee was the change regarding pass interference. Johnson says its one of the hardest calls for an official to make, given that theyre often far away from the spot where the play is being made and their view is sometimes blocked. ' ' '

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Toronto Blue Jays went limping home from their long, losing road trip. Nike Air Max 90 From China . The struggling AL East leaders lost infielder Brett Lawrie and right fielder Jose Bautista with injuries and fell to the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 Sunday. Toronto was 3-7 on its visit to Baltimore, Yankee Stadium and Cincinnati. Lawrie, twice hit in the left hand by pitches earlier in the week, sustained a broken right index finger when he was hit by a pitch from Johnny Cueto in the second inning. The team didnt immediately announce how long he would be out. "Its definitely tough," said Lawrie, who said he expects to be placed on the disabled list. "Were big pieces of the puzzle, especially (Bautista). Its tough on the team to not have all its bullets. We just have to keep on grinding." Bautista left because of tightness in his left hamstring, manager John Gibbon said. The All-Star outfielder had a single and a sacrifice bunt before leaving. Cueto pitched eight effective innings and Todd Frazier broke a 2-all tie in the fifth with a two-run homer off R.A. Dickey (6-6). Toronto has lost five of six, and has dropped five straight series. Cueto (7-5) gave up three runs -- one earned -- and leads the NL with a 1.86 ERA. He gave up seven hits and struck out eight while winning his third straight start. Gibbon became just the latest opposing manager to be dazzled by Cueto, though he also was impressed by his own starter, who got two extra days of rest after his last start because of a sore groin. ""I thought (Dickey) was pretty good, except for the home-run ball," Gibbon said. "Thats been his nemesis. It was a hot day, but he stayed out there. Cueto was just a little bit better. Hes good. Hes in a different class." Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save. Cueto led off the fifth with a bunt single. One out later, Frazier lined his team-leading 17th homer of the season, and the sixth allowed by Dickey in his last four starts. "I felt good," Dickey said. "I gave up nine hits, but I think only two or three of them could be described as hard-hit. I think all but one of my earned runs over my last four or five starts have come on home runs. Thats tough to overcome, especially against a guy like Cueto. I knew it was going to be a scrappy game from the beginning." The Reds had their own injury concerns. Second baseman Brandon Phillips left the game in the middle of the fifth with a bruised right heel, and Cueto had to shake off a hamstring cramp to stay in the game. "When Frazier hit that ball, I went back to tag and I felt it," Cueto said through a translator. "It was just a cramp." Frazier is tied with Pittsburghs Andrew McCutchen and Baltimores Adam Jones for the most home runs in the month of June, each with seven. Edwin Encarnacion led off the Toronto eighth with his 24th home run, connecting against his former team. He hit a pair of three-run shots Friday night while Toronto was coming back from an 8-0 deficit to grab a 14-9 win. The Reds used Encarnacions error at first to take a 1-0 lead in the first. With Frazier on first and two outs, Phillips was safe when Encarnacion couldnt handle third baseman Juan Franciscos throw on a chopper. Jay Bruce converted the error with an RBI single. The Blue Jays got help from two errors to take a 2-1 lead in the third. Munenori Kawasaki reached on first baseman Joey Vottos throwing error, Melky Cabrera singled and Toronto loaded the bases on Cuetos misplay of Jose Bautistas bunt. One out later, Colby Rasmus lined a two-run single. The Reds tied the game in the fourth on Bruces leadoff double, Ryan Ludwicks single and Brayan Penas run-scoring double-play grounder. Encarnacion homered off Cueto into the left-field seats. NOTES: Bautista was scheduled for an MRI on Monday. He left for pinch-runner Jose Reyes, who didnt start after fouling a ball off the side of his left knee on Saturday. ... Now the 29-year-old Texas native will be fighting hard to stay on top at the Manulife Financial Classic, beginning Thursday at Grey Silo Golf Course in Waterloo. Lewis reclaimed the LPGA lead from Park with a win last week at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in New Jersey, her second of the season. Park had leapfrogged Lewis in early 2013 when Park won the Kraft Nabisco Championship before the Tour took a week off. Lewis admitted that shes had a pretty hectic week so far, not arriving into Canada until Monday. "Its been a pretty cool week; a pretty whirlwind couple of days," she said. "Its was nice to get the win last week and getting the number one was just a bonus." Lewis, who has already finished in the top 10 in 10 tournaments this season, has to like her chances heading into Waterloo, where she has tied for fifth and sixth the previous two years. "Ive come here the last few years and played really well," she said. "I think its a golf course you have to make a ton of birdies on and I led the tour in birdies last year, and I think Im leading that stat this year, so I think that fits my game. You have to go out there and attack, and make as many birdies as you can. "This golf courses length is always an advantage, the par 5s are reachable and I think this year it will be even more of an advantage with the course playing a little bit softer. Id love to get another win, but at the same time, I just have to keep putting myself there and on Sunday, hopefully, the cards fall your way." The trick, she said, is not becoming too complacent and preparing the same way as she would for any other tournament, even though Park and No. 1 hopeful Lydia Ko are both at Grey Silo. "I feel like over the last year Ive put myself in position to win so many times that Im very comfortable," Lewis said. "Sunday last week, the nerves were there initially, but once we got going, I felt like if I took care of my game there was no way anybody was going to beat me." Someone else Lewis will have to watch for is returning champion Hee Young Park. The South Korean won the MManulife Financial Classic in dramatic fashion last year, beating Angela Stanford in a three-hole playoff. Cheap Nike Air Max 90. Stanford and Park both shot 26-under 258 at the tournament tying an LPGA record for lowest number of strokes at a four-day event. Park, ranked 23rd in the world, said she was eager to get back to familiar surroundings. "Actually this golf course is in perfect shape, everything, and I know how I was feeling and green conditions pretty much perfect, so easy to get used to it," she said. "(Earlier in the week there) was rain here so it got softer, so I can hit more aggressive, which is good." Park added that shes ready to defend her title, despite suffering a wrist injury "a few months ago". She said after some rest, the wrist feels fine. "It feels a lot better and Im back to pretty much normal, I can play," she said. "(The) last few weeks I played pretty good, so I think its ready." Lewis is hoping that the wind, which has whipped up the past few days, sticks around for the weekend on the links-style course. She feels that will keep scores down and her in contention. "I would much rather play a golf course when its playing hard than when its playing easy," she said. "Whats surprised me the last two years is that I have played well here, because I dont like courses that are just a straight birdie fest and you go crazy. I like it when its hard and you have to golf shots and things like that. "The wind this year, Im actually pretty excited about. Im excited that its going to play longer and not as short as in years passed. That gets me excited, I dont know about the other players." Besides the top three golfers in the world, there are seven Canadians in the field this year — Erica Rivard of Tecumseh, Ont., Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., Torontos Rebecca Lee-Betham, Hamiltons Alena Sharp and Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont. Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version had Park tying an LPGA record at the last Manulife Classic with a score of 26 under. She actually tied the record for the fewest number of strokes at 258. ' ' '

Beno Udrih finished with 15 points and 10 assists for the Knicks, who played again without Carmelo Anthony because of a sprained left ankle. Anthony was hurt Monday and had hoped to play against Oklahoma City on Christmas, but instead might be out until the new year. Knicks coach Mike Woodson said Anthony likely wouldnt travel with the team to Toronto for the rematch. The Raptors won for the fifth time in their last six road games, this one adding to a recent stretch of impressive fourth-quarter performances. The Raptors started the fourth with an 11-0 run in an overtime victory at Dallas on Dec. 20, then outscored Oklahoma City 29-14 on Sunday while handing the Thunder their first home loss. Toronto shot 9 of 18 in the fourth quarter, held the Knicks to 5 of 19 and had a 16-9 rebounding advantage. "Fourth quarter we just couldnt get a win. We couldnt get stops. They played well down the stretch," said the Knicks Amare Stoudemire, wearing a brace over what he said was a jammed right wrist from the previous game but adding he expected to play Saturday. John Salmons 3-pointer gave Toronto the lead for good with 8:07 left, and DeRozan followed with a jumper. After J.R. Smiths basket, Salmons made another 3 before Valanciunas scored to make it 81-75. Valanciunas had a three-point play that made it 91-81 with 2:01 remaining. Despite the Knicks miserable 9-20 record, Woodson has continued to point their focus toward the division title. The Knicks thought for most of the game they would cut their deficit to two games, but instead headed north of the border down four. "Its just disappointing because I felt like we had the game in control for a big part of the game. And then kind of let it dwindle away fourth quarter, its pretty disheartening," centre Tyson Chandler said. Despite playing without Anthony and point guard Raymond Felton, the Knicks jumped out to a strong start. Toronto fought back to take a 37-36 lead with 3:17 to go in the second, but the Knicks outscored the Raptors 13-3 the rest of the half, with Smiths second 3-pointer during that span coming with 4.5 seconds left and giving New York a 49-40 lead. The Knicks extended it to 61-49 on Tim Hardaway Jr.s 3-pointer with 7:17 remaining in the third, but the Raptors had it down to 71-66 by the end of the period before controlling the fourth. Smith had 17 points and Hardaway added 15. NOTES: Saturdays game is the last of 2013 for the Knicks, who are off until visiting San Antonio, Houston and Dallas from Jan. 2-5. ... Woodson wouldnt comment on an ESPN.com report that Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan met with the team Thursday and told players there were no trades or coaching changes forthcoming. Bouchard, a native of nearby Westmount, QC, will be playing her first match since losing her first career Grand Slam final last month. Despite being defeated in straight sets by Petra Kvitova in the Wimbledon final, the 20-year-old is looking forward to taking what she learned from loss into a new tournament. "I was disappointed to lose in the final," Bouchard said Sunday. "I expect a lot from myself and I felt I could have done better, but it was a huge learning experience in the end. After a couple of days I was able to reflect. I felt I played a good two weeks and I was proud of that, for sure, but coming so close to achieving a dream just motivated me more. Im really excited to finish the year strong. Well see what happens." Bouchard, the tournaments fifth seed and ranked eighth in the world, had a bye to the tournaments second round. MONTREAL - After failing to win in the first two games on home ice, the Tampa Bay Lightning will try to dig themselves out of a hole on the road. Nike Air Max Rebajas . Up 2-0 on the Lightning in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals, the Montreal Canadiens have a chance to take a series stranglehold as they take to their home ice tonight in Game 3 at the Bell Centre. You can listen to the game live at 7pm et/4pm pt on TSN 690 Montreal, TSN 1050 Toronto, TSN 1200 Ottawa, TSN 1290 Winnipeg and TEAM 1040 Vancouver. Montreal claimed Game 1 at Tampa in overtime on Wednesday, earning a 5-4 victory after Dale Weises OT tally. Fridays win, however, came much easier for the Canadiens, who notched a 4-1 decision to carry a 2-0 lead in the series back to Montreal. Rene Bourque scored twice for the Habs in Game 2 and Carey Price stopped 26-of-27 shots to anchor the Canadiens in the comfortable victory. David Desharnais and Brendan Gallagher also scored while P.K. Subban supplied two assists to the winning effort. Despite holding a 2-0 lead before entering a home stretch in Games 3 and 4, Bourque warned against overconfidence. "Thats probably going to be their biggest game of the series," said Bourque of tonights battle. "Theyre going to come out hard and were going to have to match their intensity." Lightning head coach Jon Cooper suggested the series is far from over, telling TSN, "Im sure theyve never had a 2-0 lead on the road and come back (home) and blown it". Cooper was referencing both 2006 and 2011, where Montreal took 2-0 road leads but ended up losing the series. Fridays three-goal margin of victory was rare for a meeting between the Habs and Bolts. Including Game 1 of the playoffs, the clubs have gone past regulation in four of six encounters since the start of the 2013-14 regular season. Teddy Purcell scored the lone goal for Tampa in the Game 2 loss, while starting goaltender Anders Lindback was pulled midway through the third period after allowing three goals on 23 shots. Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 2-of-3 shots the rest of the way. "You focus on Game 3. Thats all you can control," said Lightning forward Ryan Callahan after the clubs poor start at home. "These two are behind us. You go win Game 3, its a brand-new series. ... The odds are against us but we have to go in there and show our character." Tampa Bay has fared well in Montreal this season, posting a pair of close wins at the Bell Centre in 2013-14. The Bolts earned a 2-1 shootout win on Nov. 12 and won by the same score in overtime on Feb. 1. All told, Montreal was 23-13-5 as the home team during the regular season, while the Lightning were 21-17-3 on the road. Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday at the Bell Centre. With No. 1 goaltender Ben Bishop still out with an upper-body injury, Anders Lindback will start again in Game 3. Gudlevskis made his first NHL start late in the regular season and the 21- year-old Latvian entered his first playoff game on Friday. However, the young goaltender is no stranger to performing at a high level on the big stage, as Gudlevskis showed when he came up with 55 saves in Latvias 2-1 loss to Team Canada in the quarterfinals of Februarys Sochi Olympics. Tampa Bay could get rookie forward Ondrej Palat back in the lineup Sunday after he missed Game 2 with an upper-body injury. The Calder Trophy candidate expects to be a game-time decision for tonights contest. This is the second time the Canadiens and Lightning are meeting in the postseason, with the Tampa sweeping Montreal in four games in the Eastern Conference semifinals during its 2004 Stanley Cup championship season. PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germain dug deep to come back from two goals down and draw 2-2 at Saint-Etienne on Sunday, extending its unbeaten record to 30 games and staying ahead of Monaco on goal difference at the top of the French league. Nike Air Max Mujer Baratas . After Edinson Cavani had pulled a goal back for PSG, midfielder Blaise Matuidi scored a fortuitous goal deep into injury time as PSG took advantage of playing with an extra man for most of the second half after Saint-Etienne midfielder Fabien Lemoine was sent off. "It was a difficult night for us, it was an intense game," PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. "Saint-Etienne are really good at home and they dont let you breathe." Saint-Etienne rocked PSG as it played without fear and took the game to Blancs side. Last season, Saint-Etienne won away to PSG, drew at home and knocked PSG out of the League Cup quarterfinals, and it looked in complete control after goals from wingers Benjamin Corgnet and Romain Hamouma. "I think we were too average to get the three points and Saint-Etienne deserved at least a point," Blanc said. But after Lemoines red card in the 58th minute, Cavani turned in Maxwells cross from the left 10 minutes later for his seventh goal of the season and then Matuidis lofted pass beat goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier after bouncing in front of him with Cavani almost getting the final touch. "I am proud of my players, but I feel disappointed for them because we gave everything and we caved in with a player less," Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier said. "Its a shame, but the crowd can be proud of them." Earlier, Monaco beat Lyon 2-1 thanks to Radamel Falcaos eighth goal of the season and Mounir Obbadis first. PSG spent most of the first half on the back foot as Corgnet went close with a shot from 25 metres and then scored in the 18th minute following a bad error from PSG centre half Marquinhos. The Brazilian was far too casual as he cleared the ball and hit it straight to Hamouma. He then teed up Corgnet just inside the penalty area and his first-time shot flew past PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu and into the top right corner. Brazilian striker Brandao went close to doubling Saint-Etiennes lead but dragged his shot just wide of the post in the 29th, and midfielder Loic Perrin headed wide from a corner for a dominant home side. The second goal came in the 51st when Sirigu came out to claim a cross and fumbled the ball as centre half Alex jumped up at the same time as him. The loose ball fell to Marquinhos, but his terrible clearance bounced off Thiago Mottas leg and fell to Hamouma, who clipped it into the net. "If you dont play well against teams like this youre in trouble and thats what happened," Blanc said. "We made two huge errors in defence and we were punished." PSG was thrown a lifeline when Lemoine got a second yellow card for a foul on Ezequiel Lavezzi. Lemoine, with blood pouring from his face following the challenge, had to be restrained and then dragged away by Saint-Etiennes staff as he furiously contested the decision. "We deserved the win, but we have to keep this attitude if we want to do well this season," Hamouma said. "The red card changed everything." It became increasingly hard for Saint-Etienne to hold out and Cavanis goal set up a frantic finale. "We showed that we have character and heart and were still unbeaten," Matuidi said. "But we came up against a great Saint-Etienne side and a great crowd. We lost games like this last season but this time we came back to 2-2." Earlier, Obbadi gave Monaco the lead with a powerful half-volley into the top right corner. Falcao added a another goal in the first half with a clinical finish before striker Bafetimbi Gomis pulled a goal back for Lyon after the break. Falcao had not scored in his previous three league games but put an end to his mini-slump in fine style. A long pass from defence deflected off the back of midfielder Joao Moutinho and fell to Falcao. He sprinted into the penalty area down the right, beat the left back for pace and expertly chipped the ball over Lopes as he charged off his line. "Falcao works hard for the team, he closes down, he holds the ball up," Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri said. "Everyone should try and play for him more." Also, Cheick Dibate and Ludovic Obraniak scored late goals as Bordeaux beat 10-man Montpellier 2-0. Nike Air Max Tavas Baratas . Next years tournament is also within sight for Bosnia-Herzegovina, which has never played in a World Cup, but Cristiano Ronaldo looks destined for the playoffs with Portugal after a night when the qualifying picture in the nine groups became much clearer.BARCELONA, Spain -- Getafe fought back for a sorely needed 3-1 victory at Valencia on Sunday, breaking a 15-round winless streak and escaping from the Spanish leagues relegation zone. Getafes first away win since Oct. 31 and first under new coach Cosmin Contra lifted the struggling Madrid-based side one point clear of the drop. Forwards Angel Lafita, Ciprian Marica and Pedro Leon scored for Getafe after Eduardo Vargas opened at Mestalla Stadium. Tempers flared in the final moments after Leon apparently provoked the crowd following his goal. Valencia defender Jeremy Mathieu was sent off for slapping Leon before Contra was also banished from the dugout. Valencia joined a group of teams fighting for an upper-table finish and a European berth who all dropped points this round. Real Sociedad was held to a 1-1 draw at Osasuna and Villarreal drew 1-1 at home with Elche, so none were able to fully capitalize of the losses by Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla, and Espanyol on Saturday. That left Bilbao in fourth place and in control of the last Champions League spot. Sevilla and Real Sociedad are six points behind in fifth and sixth places, while Villarreal is a further point back in seventh. Valencia had the goal of returning to the Champions League next season, but with this stinging loss it looks set to not even make the Europa League as it sits nine points adrift of Villarreal and in ninth place. "The reality is that right now we are not better than" Getafe, said Valencia coach Juan Pizzi. Valencia appeared to be in control after Vargas headed in Dani Parejos well-placed corner kick six minutes into the match. But Lafita unleashed a blistering low strike between two defenders that went in off the post in the 25th, and two minutes later Ciprian Marica dived to head in a pass, beating Valencias offside trap on a set piece. Getafe goalkeeper Jordi Codina palmed Philippe Senderos header over in the 64th and was fortunatte Paco Alcacers shot rattled the woodwork a minute later before Leon sealed the win in the 88th. Air Max Baratas Online. "This is very important because the team was in a very delicate situation," Contra said. "This gives us a little bit of breathing room. I believe with this attitude and character we can turn this around." Sociedad also started well in Pamplona, with forward Gonzalo Castro hitting in the seventh from Carlos Velas unselfish pass following a defensive lapse from Osasuna. But Osasuna settled down and began to threaten from corners and free kicks, while Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez almost scored in the 49th from the centre line with a long lob that hit the crossbar. Osasuna striker Oriol Riera finally converted on his fourth shot attempt from a set piece when he headed in Roberto Torres cross in the 59th, and Sociedad needed goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to protect the point after Osasuna pressed them into their area in stoppage time. Villarreals quest to catch Bilbao was likewise frustrated in a dull match against Elche. After American sprinter Justin Gatlin took the honorary kickoff at El Madrigal Stadium, Elche went ahead in the 31st when Damian Suarez converted a penalty following Jeremy Perbets foul on Alberto Botia. Forward Jonathan Pereira scored the hosts equalizer a minute before halftime when he used one touch to turn in a high ball that fell to him in the box in one of few scoring chances. Valladolid beat 10-man Almeria 1-0 at home in a match between two teams fighting to avoid relegation. Valladolid striker Manucho scored what proved to be the winner in the sixth. Almeria defender Marco Torsiglieri was dismissed in the 75th with his second yellow card for fouling Manucho. Almeria was left in the drop zone along with Osasuna and Real Betis. Atletico Madrid leads the league by one point over Barcelona and three points ahead of Real Madrid with seven games to play. ' ' '

FORTALEZA, Brazil - With tears streaming down his face after being kneed in the back, Neymar was carried off the field on a stretcher. Dragan Bender Suns Jersey . He wont be coming back. Not to this World Cup, anyway. The 22-year-old Brazil striker, the one with the hopes of a nation on his shoulders, was ruled out of the rest of the tournament after fracturing his third vertebra during Fridays 2-1 quarterfinal win over Colombia. "Its a big loss for us," Brazil midfielder Fernandinho said. "We need to find a way to stay together and become stronger after losing our greatest player. We will try to win this World Cup and for sure we will dedicate it to Neymar." Neymar is the biggest football star in Brazil, and one of the biggest at the tournament along with Argentina forward Lionel Messi. His face has been plastered on billboards and shown on television continuously, leading many of his staunchest supporters to copy his dyed-blonde fauxhawk. His millions of fans had expected Neymars World Cup to end with him holding the trophy, not being carried off the field in tears. Neymar was kneed by Colombia defender Juan Camilo Zuniga late in the second half at the Arena Castelao. He was taken to a private clinic and was released a short time later. He was not expected to need surgery, Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said, but he will also not be able to face Germany on Tuesday in the World Cup semifinals. "He will not be in condition to play, he will need a few weeks to be fit again," Lasmar said. "He is very, very sad." About 50 Brazil fans, many still wearing the teams jerseys, crowded outside the clinic where Neymar was taken, while the ambulance that carried him remained parked in front, lights blazing. Neymar was hurt in the 86th minute, falling to the ground in pain after Zuniga jumped into him from behind. Brazil teammate Marcelo quickly called for medical assistance when he saw Neymar writhing in pain. Neymar stayed face down until team doctors arrived and put him on a stretcher. "Everybody knew that Neymar would be hunted," Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said. "Its been happening in the last three matches and we had been talking about it. But nobody listens to us." Fridays match ended with 54 fouls in total — 31 by Brazil and 23 by Colombia. Scolari said Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo should have done more to take control of the match. According to Hulk, another of Brazils striker, Neymar needs more protection from the officials. "Every time is like this. Players always come after Neymar," Hulk said. "The referees need to do more to keep this from happening." ___ Associated Press video journalist Renata Brito contributed to this report. Kevin Johnson Suns Jersey . While the 23-year-olds progress had some teammates saying he was looking pretty good, Stamkos offered a more tempered approach to his return. "I dont feel where I need to be in order to play a game yet, but its getting there," he told reporters after practice at the Bell Centre in Montreal. "Its nice to hear that the guys are saying that. Today I was in the corners a little more and getting bumped around (but) by no means was it full contact." Stamkos fractured the tibia in his right leg in a Nov. 11 game against the Boston Bruins and underwent surgery the following day. He returned to practice earlier than expected, leading each days progress to be closely monitored by Lightning fans as well as Canadians. Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman named Stamkos to Canadas 25-man roster for the coming Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, but with Canadas first game just two weeks away, the clock is ticking on his hopes to be healthy in time. "You just have to listen to your body," Stamkos said. "Were talking a lot about the Olympics and my goal is to try to be ready for those Games, but your body doesnt lie. If youre doing certainn movements and you feel pain then thats an indicator that maybe its not quite ready. Charles Barkley Suns Jersey. . "It is tough mentally as well, going in there knowing that youre a little hesitant in certain areas. Ive said that before that thats what you dont want so you just try to overcome that as you progress and you take more contact in practice and hopefully that goes away." Stamkos scored 14 goals and 23 points in 17 for the Lightning this season prior to his injury. However, opportunities to get into game action before the Olympics are dwindling for the sniper. The Lightning have four games remaining before the NHL goes on break for the Games with the teams final game coming Feb. 8 against the Detroit Red Wings. While the Brampton, Ontario native wouldnt commit to a timeline, he acknowledged his progress thus far and expressed hope for it to continue over the next two weeks. "It has gotten better," he said. "Theres less and less pain every time I get on the ice but there is still a little discomfort. "Im hoping in the next week and a half, two weeks, that that feels a lot better and I can do certain movements without having that pain or at least with some pain thats manageable. Right now its still a little sharp in certain areas so thats what Im trying to improve." ' ' '

FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS 1. Sterling Brown Jersey . CHRIS GRANT (Cavs): The GM gets fired on Thursday after his team won only 29 per cent of its games during his tenure. Obviously, a totally undermanned Lakers team beating them on their home floor was the final straw. Wow, what a mess it is right now. Many folks thought with the addition of Jarrett Jack, Andrew Bynum, head coach Mike Brown and first overall pick Anthony Bennett that they would be knocking on the door for a seven or eight seed in the East. No such luck. Its been dysfunctional and the idea of signing LeBron James in the summer looks like a pipe dream and the ability to hold onto Kyrie Irving (in spite of what he says) is in serious doubt. Fragile business. 2. ENES KANTER (Jazz): Have watched him twice in person and on TV a bunch of times and I gotta confess, Im more of a Derrick Favors fan. Not sure both of these guys can co-exist. Kanter is averaging 12 and 6 and when I watch him I see a guy that is a bit robotic with his game. Yes hes a bruiser but its hard to play that style unless you have great skill to go with it. Still a work in progress. 3. CHRIS PAUL (Clippers): Its a bit chilly and rain is in the forecast here for later today in L.A. Rather this than snow and freezing temperatures. News that warmed me up today was the fact that the All-Star point guard wont make his return from injury until Sunday so the Raptors catch a break not seeing him. But it will still be a very difficult game to win for Toronto here on Friday. It will be great for Paul to get on the court this weekend and play next weekend at his first professional stop (New Orleans) in the All-Star Game. Good for the sport. Terrific player and class act. 4. RAPTORS at KINGS: It was the fourth time in the last few weeks (Celtics, Lakers, Bobcats) that the Raptors played down to their competition and "Played the Record". Games like these haunt teams and cause sleepless nights for coaches. I felt for Dwane Casey on Thursday night - he tried everything to get his team going with little success. Im sorry but this team isnt good enough to overlook anyone. Totally got outplayed and didnt deserve to win. Winning teams have real good habits. This team still floats big time with its focus. Its easy to get up for the name teams but as usual guys get it backwards. Its really hard to win those games. Play really hard against the teams you can beat and youll have a really nice season and then steal the occasional game when you play a team thats in the upper class. Tough lessons to learn. Time they actually learn the lesson and do something about it. You want the third our fourth seed and home court in the first round of the Playoffs? Punch the clock, bring the lunch bucket and hard hat and compete like crazy. You do that - youll have success. Time to grow up a bit. I have no issues with losing if you lay it all on the line to the best of your ability and the other guy happens to be better that night - that happens. Shake his hand and hold your head high and get ready for the next one. Stop teasing folks. This team is good enough and has good people on it - theyll figure it out. 5. TOM THIBODEAU (Bulls): I like what he said recently about playing time. Hes the boss and he and only he will determine who gets the privilege that you have to EARN to play and finish games. Carlos Boozer is upset with his fourth quarter role of late. I have a suggestion - play really hard and well and guess what? Youll play and finish games. Coaches want to and have to win. Its your job to please your coach, not the other way around. A coachs ultimate loyalty has to be to winning and team. Nothing else comes close. Believe me you could coach a guy you completely dislike personally yet youll play him every minute if he helps you win. Ray Allen Bucks Jersey . A last-minute leveler ensured the two-time defending champion remained nine points ahead of Roma, which drew 0-0 at bitter rival Lazio in the capital derby. Brook Lopez Bucks Jersey . "Last year didnt go the way we wanted it to, but we need to look at what went well and what didnt go so well. Hopefully this year we will be better," Brendan Gallagher said after practice. This year, the Canadiens have a little more depth to work with by adding players like Daniel Briere, Dale Weise, Mike Weaver, Douglas Murray and arguably, the biggest addition to this playoff roster, Thomas Vanek, who the Canadiens were able to land at the trade deadline. https://www.bucksrookiesshop.com/Giannis-Antetokounmpo-City-Edition-Jersey/ . Miami Marlins stud outfielder Giancarlo Stanton might soon be the recipient of the biggest contract in MLB history. Yeezy Boost 350 v2 Kopen Belgie . According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Marlins are close to signing the 25-year-old Stanton to a 13-year, $325 million contract. Stanton will become a free agent in two seasons if Miami doesnt lock him up. If the deal ends up coming to fruition, it would be the largest contract in professional sports history, beating Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and his 10 year, $292 million deal signed last year. OAKLAND, Calif. Custom Nike Washington Nationals Jerseys . -- Al Jefferson had 30 points and 13 rebounds, Gerald Henderson added 17 points and eight rebounds and the Charlotte Bobcats blew past the Golden State Warriors 91-75 on Tuesday night in Kemba Walkers much-anticipated return. Walker finished with seven points, seven assists and six rebounds after missing the last seven games with a sprained left ankle. He played 33 minutes. The Bobcats controlled the game from the start, going ahead by 18 points late in the third quarter and 22 midway through the fourth. Charlotte, which shot 47.4 per cent, held the Warriors to a season-low 31.2 per cent shooting. Stephen Curry had 17 points and 11 assists against his hometown team, Klay Thompson scored 12 and Andrew Bogut grabbed 15 rebounds for the Warriors, who have been held below 38 per cent shooting in three of their past four games. The Warriors briefly gave their announced sellout crowd of 19,596 something to cheer for when Marreese Speights made a half-court heave as the third quarter expired to slice Charlottes lead 72-57. Any hope quickly faded when Anthony Tolliver hit a pair of 3-pointers to put the Bobcats up 78-60 lead with 9:51 remaining. The Bobcats closed out their road trip 3-1 and handed a streaky Golden State team another stinging setback. Warriors coach Mark Jackson publicly called out his team last month for playing down to their opponents too often this season, especially at home. Apparently, his players still havent received the message. The Bobcats (22-28) swept the season against the Warriors (29-20) after beating Golden State 115-111 in Charlotte on Dec. 9. And out West, they outhustled and outshot the Warriors from the start. Charlotte ran Golden States prolific shooters off the 3-point line, forcing them into difficult mid-range jumpers. The Bobcats were equally efficient on the offensive end, going ahead 26-13 after the first quarter. The Warriors simply looked lost and lethargic. They hovered just above 20 per cent shooting for most of the first half, and their usually loud crowd stayed mostly silent. The Bobcats went ahead 44-27 with 3:42 left in the second quarter and 51-39 at halftime. It was only the third time all season the Warriors had been held below 40 points in the first half. Golden State trimmed Charlottes lead to eight early in the third quarter on Thompsons 3-pointer. Bobcats coach Steve Clifford called timeout to regroup his players, who responded by building an 18-point lead before Speights hit a halfcourt shot as time expired to bring the Warriors within 72-57 entering the fourth. That was pretty much the only celebration Charlotte allowed. NOTES: The Warriors worst shooting performance before Tuesday was when they shot 35.5 per cent in a 105-83 loss at Houston on Dec. 6. ... Warriors backup centre Jermaine ONeal had nine points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes in his first game since Dec. 9 at Charlotte. He missed 26 games recovering from surgery on his right wrist. ... England have won all nine of their Tests under Eddie Jones and the likes of Stuart Barnes believe they are more than capable of extending that this autumn.Englands rise has been impressive since those low days of the 2015 World Cup when they failed to get out of the pool stages. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) rang the changes with Jones replacing Stuart Lancaster as head coach. HPE Data Zone Analysis that gives insight, understanding and opinion across major sporting moments. Find out more. The nine games under Jones have seen England show some impressive attacking prowess by scoring 27 tries and racking up a total of 265 points.Compare this to the opening nine matches of Stuart Lancasters tenure in which he suffered two defeats and 68 fewer points were scored, despite scoring 24 tries during this period.Jones England statistically faced a tougher challenge at the start of his reign, facing teams with an average world ranking of sixth in comparison to eighth during Lancasters opening nine matches. While it was a relatively successful start to his career, the stats of Lancasters England during the 2015 World Cup tell a very different story. In the four matches that took place during the pool stages, where Englands opponents averaged ninth in the world rankings, England won just two of their matches scoring a tally of 133 points and 18 tries while conceding 75.However, 95 of those points and all but four of the tries came against Fiji and Uruguay, two games in which the opposition posed less of a threat. In 2016, six of Englands nine matches have taken place on the road (three during the Six Nations and three in Australia). While England conceded more points on average away from home, 24 as opposed to 14.6, their average points tally on their travels were also higher scoring on average 7.7 points more than games played at Twickenham.England are now unbeaten in 10 games in a row (they won their final World Cup pool game 60-3 against Uruguay) and are looking to go unbeaten in a calendar year for their first time in the professional era.Between 23rd March 2002 and 5th March 2004 England won 24 out of their 25 Tests, their only loss coming in a pre-World Cup friendly to France where a changed England side slipped to a 17-16 defeat in Marseille, bringing a 14 match winning run to an end.During this time they averaged 39.5 points per game, conceding 14.6 at home while away from Twickenham (including the Rugby World Cup in 2003 where games were played on neutral territory) they averaged a total of 38.2 points in their favour and just 11.8 against.England v South AfricaEngland havent beaten the Springboks since 2006, with 11 defeats and one draw occurring during that time. Can England break that spell when they face South Africa on November 12?For Allister Coetzee and South Africa, 2016 has been a year to forget. They have suffered defeat in five of their 10 matches conceding 57 more points than they scored. The summer saw the Springboks stutter past Ireland to snatch a series victory despite the visitors securing a historic opening Test win on South African soil. After sealing the victory in Cape Town, Ireland let slip a 19-3 half-time lead in the second Test in Johannesburg. Many felt their chance of joining a select band of teams to have won a series on South African soil had gone. But with a third of their first choice XV missing, Ireland rallied themselves in Port Elizabeth where they could and indeed should have won, dominating the match everywhere apart from the scoreboard. The Springboks have come under fire for their policy of allowing those who play their rugby overseas to continue to play for the national side, signalling a mass exodus out of the country, stripping South Africa of their depth and experience.Of the 31-man squad announced at the start of the 2016 Rugby Championship campaign, seven currently play their rugby abroad with a further two, Vincent Koch and Franco Mostert, heading overseas following the conclusion of the autumn tour.Stats comparing England and South Africas last five games (Not including SA v Baa-baas)England South AfricaTries175Conversions114Penalty goals1916Tackles703577Missed tackles126116Carries495412Offloads2639Penalties conceded3837Metres made18441348Defenders beaten8688Rucks won354273Rucks lost2718Scrums won2538Scrums lost33Lineouts won6459Lineouts lost32Kicks in play135135England v ArgentinaDespite their struggles on the domestic stage with the Jaguares, the Pumas shone in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, making it all the way to the semi-final stage where they came unstuck against Rugby Championship rivals Australia.Their most impressive performance came at the quarter-final stage when they dismantled Ireland with ease, recording a 43-20 victory. The story behind Englands meteoric rise under the guidance of their coach Eddie Jones. Custom Nike Baseball Jerseys Store. Since their inclusion in the Rugby Championship, Argentina have competed in 27 matches winning on three occasions, away against Australia in 2014 and South Africa in 2015 and 2016, once home and once away, alongside a draw with the Springboks in 2012.Argentina have recorded just one win at Twickenham against England, back in November 2006 where they ran out 18-25 victors, but Daniel Hourcades side have expanded their game since then.Argentinas forward play has a reputation for being hard-nosed and no-nonsense, an ever-present weapon in their armour providing a stern test for anyone that stands in their way and over the years have established themselves as one of the most feared scrummaging units in world rugby. However in recent years they have expanded their playing style and while the tough core of traditional Argentinian rugby remains, the 2015 World Cup displayed there is more than one way to win a rugby match and now possess some of the most potent attacking weapons in the game. Ben Morgan on the charge against Argentina in 2013 In the 2007 tournament, they scored 17 tries in reaching the semi-finals. In 2015 despite the fact that defences also have improved, they reached the same point in the tournament with 26, second only to the All Blacks and eight more than any northern hemisphere side.In their impressive quarter-final victory over Ireland, where they raced away to a 17-point lead after just 13 minutes, they made twice as many line breaks as their opponents and double the amount of metres, a stat not synonymous with a country famed for their grunt up front.England v FijiFor Fiji, a win against England is something that continues to elude them. Currently ranked 11th in the world, Fiji have faced England on six occasions, four at Twickenham and twice in the Fijian capital Suva, conceding a total of 245 points whilst scoring just 94 in total. However, the gap does appear to be closing between the sides. When the two nations met at Twickenham in November 2012, the visitors conceded 54 points including seven tries whilst scoring 12 of their own.Compare this to the 2015 World Cup where the they met the hosts in the pool stages, their defence looked more assured and limited their opponents to just 35 points, 24 more than themselves, a vast improvement on the 42 point difference the previous time they had met. However, many would argue that the 2015 met a very different side, one void of confidence and form in a World Cup that signalled disaster for England.England v AustraliaWhile England may have won their previous three matches over Australia during their series whitewash, Michael Cheikas side got the better of their fierce rivals with a comprehensive 13-33 win the last time they met at Twickenham.Out of the previous 10 encounters between the two sides, England have secured wins in seven. However, only two of these matches have taken place on home soil. Over the previous 10 meetings at the home of English rugby the scores are even, both sides securing five wins each. Mako Vunipola storms through Australias defence Australia, despite finishing second in the Rugby Championship standings, have had a below-par 2016.Since suffering their 3-0 series defeat at the hands of England they failed to make their mark against their biggest Southern hemisphere rivals, finishing a monstrous 16 points behind the All Blacks in the standings, securing just three wins in their six matches.Boasting just a 36 per cent win rate in 2016 so far, conceding 62 points more than they scored, the Wallabies will have to find some form quickly if they are to trouble England at Twickenham once again.Find out more about Hewlett Packard Enterprise data solutions. Patrick DAmico added two for the Pats, Braden Christoffer had a single and Morgan Klimchuk chipped in a goal and four assists. WASHINGTON -- Stephen Strasburg turned in a strong outing and the bats produced another bunch of runs. After two months of mediocrity, perhaps the Washington Nationals have turned the page. Strasburg struck out 11 in seven innings Wednesday night and the Nationals kept the Philadelphia Phillies bats quiet yet again in an 8-4, rain-interrupted win. The Nationals have won four of five, outscoring the Texas Rangers and Phillies 34-10 during that span. True, five games represent barely more than 3 per cent of the regular-season schedule, but they had to start somewhere. "Its been a lot of fun for us, pitching the ball good and swinging the bat well," said leadoff hitter Denard Span, who had two doubles and two RBIs. "Hopefully we keep it going." Strasburg (5-4) had the Phillies flailing as he hit double digits in Ks for the 15th time in his career -- and for the fourth time without issuing a walk. Ten of the right-handers 11 strikeouts were swinging, including Marlon Byrd (95 mph fastball), Ryan Howard (95 mph fastball) and Domonic Brown (88 mph change-up) when the rain started to fall in the sixth inning. "Facing a lefty-heavy lineup is difficult," Washington manager Matt Williams said. "But he used his changeup really well and spotted his fastball." The only consolation for the Phillies is that they scored an earned run for the first time in four games when facing the Nationals ace. The streak reached 25 innings before Philadelphia crossed the plate twice in the fifth -- once earned, once unearned. John Mayberry Jr. added a two-run pinch-hit homer in the seventh, but by then Strasburg had been working with a cushion of a half-dozen runs. The tarp came out shortly afterward, delaying the game for 1 hour, 48 minutes. Anthony Rendon finished with three hits and three RBIs, including a solo homer. Danny Espinosa had a two-run double that was a foot or so away from a grand slam, and Strasburg himself added a single, walk and run scored for the Nationals, who aare above . Burnett (3-5) again had control issues in his worst outing of the season. Tied for the majors lead in walks entering the game, he issued four more free passes, including back-to-back walks in Washingtons four-run fourth and a walk to Strasburg in the three-run sixth. "Theyre unaggressive walks. I dont care if theres a base open. Thats not me," Burnett said. "Thats putting me in passive mode. Thats my fault. Ive got to go after hitters. I dont care if a base is open. I dont care whos up. I mean, thats not who I am. Ill take six aggressive walks over boo-boo walks that are 3-0 sliders, 3-0 curveballs or whatever it is." Burnett allowed eight runs over six innings. He was particularly bothered by the home run he gave up to Rendon in the fifth immediately after the Phillies had cut a 4-0 lead to 4-2. "For somebody who harps on shutdown innings, Im pretty (bad) at it," he said. "And I will be better. Guys throws up runs, you need to put up zeroes after that." The Phillies have lost five straight and are an NL-worst 9-19 since May 4. "Sun is going to come up, believe or not," Burnett said. "It might be a little cloudy." NOTES: It was Burnetts first loss against the Expos-Nationals franchise since April 8, 2002, when his Florida Marlins fell 10-2 to Montreal. In an unusually blunt public warning, a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday called the delayed preparations for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro "the worst I have experienced. Authentic Hockey Jerseys ." John Coates, who has made six trips to Brazil as part of the IOCs co-ordination commission for Rio, said the Brazilians are behind "in many, many ways" and are in worse shape than Greek organizers were in preparing for the 2004 Olympics. Despite the critical delays, the Australian said there is no backup plan and the games will take place in Rio. Coates noted that the IOC had taken the unprecedented step of embedding experts in the host city to help the local organizing committee deliver the games. "The IOC has formed a special task force to try and speed up preparations but the situation is critical on the ground," Coates told an Olympic forum in Sydney, outlining that construction delays are just part of the problem. "The IOC has adopted a more hands-on role. It is unprecedented for the IOC, but there is no plan B. We are going to Rio." Brazil has also come under fire from footballs world governing body, FIFA, for long delays in construction of stadiums and other infrastructure and the overdue delivery of venues for the World Cup, which kicks off in June. Two years out from the 2016 Olympics, the situation on the construction front is just as bleak. "We have become very concerned. They are not ready in many, many ways," Coates said. "And this is against a city thats got social issues that also have to be addressed; a country thats also trying to deal with the FIFA World Cup coming up in a few months." Coates said dealing with three levels of government in Brazil made it harder for local organizers than it was for the heavily criticized organizers of the Athens Games, which were also plagued by construction delays and earned a "yellow light" warning from then-IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. "I think this is a worse situation than Athens," Coates said. "In Athens, we were dealing with one government and some city responsibilities. Here, theres three. "There is bureaucracy, there is little co-ordination between the federal, the state government and the city -- which is responsible for a lot of the construction. The flow of funds from the federal government is not happening quickly enough. We think we need to help facilitate that." Coates, who chairs the IOC co-ordination commission for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, said he thinks the IOC has put the message across in Brazil. "We have to make it (the Olympics) happen and that is the IOC approach, you cant walk away from this," he said. "If it comes off -- the first (Olympic) Games on the South American continent, in a magical city in so many ways -- itll be a wonderful experience for the athletes." Work hasnt begun at Deodoro, a complex for eight Olympics sports venues, and the course that will host golfs return to the Olympic program for the first time in more than a century doesnt have grass yet. Water pollution is a big worry for sailing and other sports. Concern over the delays has been building over time but hit crisis levels at the SportAccord meeting in Belek, Turkey, earlier this month. In a rare display of unified, open criticism against an Olympic host, 18 sports federations publicly aired concerns over Rios preparations, with some sports asking about "Plan B" contingencies. The IOC has decided to send a senior troubleshooter, IOC executive director Gilbert Felli, to Brazil as part of a series of emergency measures to tackle the delays threatening the games. Coates said other experienced, high-level staff will soon be appointed. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes fired back last week at the complaints by sports federations, saying they were making too many unnecessary demands. Paes said the federations were asking for too many "large things" that wont be used by the city after the Olympics.
