The Professor Ricky Ray has been putting on a clinic just about every time hes been on the field in 2013. Im loving watching this guy go out there and nonchalantly dismantle defence after defence and effortlessly complete ball after ball after ball. Rays unmatched accuracy (77.2 percent completion rate and 21 touchdown passes to only two interceptions in 2013) is extremely rare. Ive called many of his games when hes torching defences and I cant emphasize it enough for fans to take notice and enjoy it while they can. Quarterbacks like Ray come around but every half century or so...rare indeed! Whats giving this pulse-less and pure passing quarterback a chance to succeed even more than usual is he is matched with a coach, Scott Milanovich, that gets it; he himself having been there before. Its like the perfect storm: a head coach that has played the position before equipped with a tremendous offensive scheme coupled with, in my opinion, the most accurate pure passer the CFL has ever seen!Know this, when you are on top of your game as a quarterback, theres nothing a defence can show you, throw at you, or do to you that you dont have an answer for offensively. Its a state or level we all try to achieve and get to. When you do, or if you do, you just hope that your physical skills are still at a premium level so you can maximize the knowledge you have. Thats when you are hitting on all cylinders and truly a general on the field of play. I try and explain it to people like this: when you are in that zone I just described, you are connecting all the dots before the ball is even snapped, meaning you already know where you are going with the football before the play starts. The formation, pre-snap motion, positioning of each and every defender and their reactions only verify what you already know. Its now just getting the ball in your hands and using your eyes in order to expand a hole for a receiver or move a defender just a bit more, and then you plant your back foot and - with great confidence, timing, and accuracy - you trust your eyes and pull the trigger! Ray does this more consistently than anyone else in the league, period! The video tells you as much, just about every play hes on the field; like the old saying goes, “The eye in the sky never lies.” You can see the prior preparation coming into play: the experience, the talent, and the recognition. When it does, now you are throwing with confidence and spotting the football. Pitching and catching! Another guy that comes to mind that is pure and as prepared as Ray is a guy named Peyton Manning. You see him connect the dots dont you? Well thats what Ray is doing, and hes doing it with only 20 seconds every play or half the time Manning gets! Impressive, I know! Now Im not saying that hes unstoppable, Im just telling you hes extremely rare. My good friend and colleague Gord Miller once told me, “Having a good quarterback does not guarantee that you are going to win, but not having one guarantees you wont.” Enjoy folks, because this guy is special and hes in that ZONE. The Argos have developed a really nice alternative to the three-time Grey Cup winner in Zach Collaros. Zach has showed us all that there are several ways to be successful at quarterback. Young, talented and extremely mobile are just a few of his positive attributes. Two other strengths are his creativity when the initial structure of a play breaks down and his resilience. You think this guys down and out and he gets up off the canvas and starts to dominate and find a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The quarterbacking carousel and talent pool does not stop there for the Argonauts. We have had a chance to see Trevor Harris a little this season and got a glimpse of Mitchell Gale as well. Both these young quarterbacks have the skill set to be successful in this league. Their hurdles and struggles are finding the opportunity to prove it. The Eastern Final between the Argos and Hamilton Tiger-Cats is surprisingly rare. In fact, its the first time since 1986. But thats not as rare as the Argos Ricky Ray. Go down to the Rogers Centre this Sunday, buy a ticket and watch this guy connect the dots! Chase Anderson Brewers Jersey .C. -- Duke sophomore Rodney Hood is entering the NBA draft. Mike Moustakas Brewers Jersey . According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the New York Rangers winger skated with extras and goalies today. Bryant underwent an operation in December to correct an irregular heartbeat. His season ended with four games left because of a rapid heartbeat, a condition he has known about for several years and had been treated for in the past. Tyrone Taylor Jersey . HEROES P.K. Subban – Scored the overtime winner and assisted on Montreal’s earlier goal, both on the power play, in a 2-1 win over Nashville. Orlando Arcia Jersey . The rookie is rewarding their faith with a stellar first season. MacKinnon had a goal and two assists, Jamie McGinn had two goals and an assist, and Colorado beat the Buffalo Sabres 7-1 on Saturday. CHICAGO -- Jake Arrieta took the ball for the Chicago Cubs and picked up right where he left off. He threw his fastball where he wanted it to go. His breaking stuff had good late movement. The Cincinnati Reds finally had to put him on base to get him out of the game. Arrieta retired his first 18 batters and struck out nine in seven impressive innings, leading Chicago to a 7-3 victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday night. "He was commanding his pitches," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "His pitches had life." Arrieta (4-1) struck out eight during his perfect start, including the side in the sixth. He had a leadoff walk in the bottom half and came around to score when Homer Bailey (7-4) hit Starlin Castro with the bases loaded. That little trip around the bases proved costly. Rookie Billy Hamilton started the seventh with a single up the middle for Cincinnatis first baserunner. "I was pretty gassed there, unfortunately," Arrieta said. "Pretty humid night. Long inning there in the sixth. Running the bases, which really isnt all that tough in itself, but you couple that with being on the mound and having that long layoff, it adds a little bit to it." Arrieta allowed two runs and three hits while improving to 3-0 with a 1.14 ERA in five June starts. It was his first win of the season at Wrigley Field, where he has yielded three runs in 23 innings over four starts. "Really its just kind of going through the process that I feel like gives me the best chance to have success," he said, "and going through it day by day and sticking with it." Anthony Rizzo belted a solo homer for the second straight night for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Welington Castillo drove in two runs, including a sacrifice fly in Chicagos three-run eighth. Devin Mesoraco homered for the fifth straight game for Cincinnati, matching a franchise record. Mesoracos 14th homer came with one out in the ninth against Neil Ramirez. "It was late in the game. All the other homers were to help the team wiin, and important, big homers," he said.dddddddddddd "They actually meant a lot. That one didnt really help us come back, so it doesnt mean as much." Mesoraco also had an RBI single in the seventh and scored on Jay Bruces double before Arrieta struck out Ryan Ludwick to complete his masterful night against one of the majors hottest lineups. Cincinnati had won three straight and nine of 12, averaging 6.7 runs and 10.2 hits per game in that stretch. The Cubs used four relievers to get through the eighth, and Ramirez finished Chicagos 12th win in 42 games against Cincinnati over the last three seasons. The Reds had runners at first and second in the eighth when third baseman Mike Olt made a nice diving stop on Todd Fraziers grounder for the final out of the inning. The start of the game was delayed 53 minutes by rain, but the pitchers adjusted quite nicely to the late start. Bailey retired his first 11 batters, striking out five. But Rizzo drove the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning into the basket in right-centre for the first of his three hits and his 17th homer this season. Castillo added a run-scoring double in the fifth, and the Cubs chased Bailey while scoring two more in the sixth. Nate Schierholtz had a sacrifice fly for the first of his two RBIs. Bailey allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two in his first loss at Wrigley since he pitched 5 1-3 innings in his first career appearance at the cozy neighbourhood ballpark on Sept. 13, 2009. The right-hander began the day with a 5-1 record and a 2.56 ERA in seven road starts against the Cubs. "Just bad pitch execution in the last inning or two," Bailey said. "That was probably the only thing I saw." NOTES: Hamilton extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. ... Cubs OF Emilio Bonifacio (rib injury) is working out, but has yet to resume baseball activities. "Hes improving," Renteria said. ... Reds RHP Mat Latos (0-0, 3.86 ERA) and Cubs RHP Edwin Jackson (5-7, 5.12 ERA) pitch in the series finale Wednesday. ' ' '

TORONTO - The most expensive team in Toronto FC history is finishing the MLS season like all the other ones before it. Out of the playoffs.A Toronto FC team assembled with a thick chequebook was officially eliminated from post-season contention for the eighth year in a row via a 1-1 tie Saturday with the Montreal Impact, the worst road team in the league, in a game that saw three players sent off.The coup de grace was administered with Torontos two biggest stars looking on from the stands. English striker Jermain Defoe was nursing the groin injury that has disrupted the second half of his season while American midfielder Michael Bradley, who along with captain Steven Caldwell is the conscience of the team, was suspended. To make the playoffs, Toronto (11-14-8) had needed to win its remaining games against Montreal and New England and hope that fifth-place Columbus lost both its matches against New York and Philadelphia.Instead Eastern Conference cellar-dweller Montreal (6-18-9) played spoiler, denying TFC the points it needed and booking Columbus a berth in the playoffs. The Crew play the Red Bulls on Sunday.Montreal has now lost just once in its last six outings in all competitions (2-1-3). But it finishes the campaign winless on the road (0-12-5).Its disappointing. You look where we are in the standings, and there are a lot of things that we have to address, and areas where we have to adjust, but you have to have the ability to win on the road, said Montreal coach Frank Klopas.Toronto cant have any complaints, picking up one point from 12 available in the last four matches. Despite setting several single-season records in 2014, its history of failure continues. You have to execute, you have to take points ... you must win the home ones, especially down the stretch said Toronto coach Greg Vanney, citing a costly loss to Houston earlier this month. The draw today is not good enough in terms of results. Effort is one thing but execution and finishing games and taking points is what professional sports is about, he added. We put in the effort but we didnt execute well enough.Toronto, which entered the league in 2007, has never made the playoffs. The locker-room was gutted after today, because they know the season is done for them, said Vanney. We can be better for sure, he added, including himself in the equation. This premature exit is all the more painful because of the raised expectations due to the signings of designated players Defoe, Bradley and Brazilian striker Gilberto, as well as a supporting cast featuring defender Justin Morrow, midfielders Jackson, Collen Warner, Dominic Oduro and Warren Creavalle and striker Luke Moore.A bloody big deal was the TFC slogan that has come back to haunt the team. The salaries of the DPs alone totalled almost US$14 million this season.Tim Leiweke, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, promised a year ago that the club would make the post-season this time.Mark it down, write it down, film it ... were going to turn TFC around and were going to make the playoffs next year, he told an Empire Club luncheon in October 2013 after Toronto finished 17th in the 19-team league with a 6-17-11 record.Vanney had to offer a different message to his players after the game.I said take this feeling in. Because for me we should never ever have this feeling again, he said. This should be the last time. This will be the last time that we dont make the playoffs. The post-season has eluded the previous eight Toronto head coaches, including Ryan Nelsen who was axed along with five assistant coaches in August. On the positive side, Toronto has set single-season franchise highs for wins (11) and points (41) this year. The previous marks were set in 2009 (10-11-9, 39 points). But it slid down the standings in the second half of the season. It was a roller-coaster ride the whole way, said goalie Joe Bendik. But contrast Torontos season with D.C. United, which went from 19th in the league last season with a 3-24-7 record to leading the Eastern Conference with a 16-9-7 record this season.Toronto has a good core to build around with the likes of Bradley, Bendik, Caldwell, Gilberto, Morrow, Nick Hagglund and Jonathan Osorio. Defoes status is up in the air, given the speculation surrounding the future at the closing of the last transfer window. It also has three first-round picks in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.Montreal had the benefit of the wind at its back in the first half Saturday but Toronto struck first in the 20th minute, with Warren Creavalles stylish volley finding the corner of Evan Bushs goal. The chance came after Luke Moores shot squibbed off defender Matteo Ferrari high into the air before dropping nicely onto Creavalles foot.It was his first goal for Toronto FC — and the fourth of his four-year MLS career — and he may not score a nicer one.Montreal tied it up in the 39th minute — against the run of play — on Brazilian attacking midfielder Felipes powerful shot from the edge of the penalty box. Andres Romero knocked the ball over to him after taking a magnificent pass from captain Patrice Bernier just inside the Montreal side of midfield.Impact striker Jack McInerney did his part, drawing both centre backs as he ran towards goal as Romero got the ball. That left Felipe wide open. The Brazilian, a thorn in Torontos side all afternoon, celebrated his third of the season by dancing in front of the Toronto fans in the southeast corner of the stadium.Vanney called it classless, suggesting he would not take kindly to one of his own players taunting opposition supporters.Celebrate with yourselves and celebrate with your fans, he said. Just dont worry about the opposing fans. But some people see it differently. It was the 53rd goal conceded by Toronto this season.Montreal defender Heath Pearce was sent off in the 82nd minute for a scissors tackle on substitute Dominic Oduro. Osorio was ejected in stoppage time, for a tackle on Felipe. Impact defender Hassoun Camara soon followed, for a second yellow.Camara dug himself an ugly hole with a fifth-minute yellow card. In his bid to get at referee Baldomero Toledo, Camara had to be pulled away by another teammate. In helping end the season for Montreals Canadian rival, Bush saw the draw as being like a win.You always want the three points but this definitely feels like three points today, Bush said. The way the game ended was a bit unfortunate but we got the result that we needed to knock them out of the playoffs and thats what we are happy about. There were plenty of empty seats for the home finale on a breezy 11-degree day at BMO Field. But it was no fault of Montreal, which had a healthy travelling contingent in the west stand. The announced crowd was 18,329, the second straight non-sellout.It was an exciting game and more important than anything, it was great to see the amount of fans, our fans, that came from Montreal, the atmosphere was great, said Klopas. It was good to put on a display like that. Its easy to say, I think we deserved to win the game but it was a very good performance in front of what felt like a home crowd with all our fans coming down here.Argentine midfielder Ignacio Piatti, who joined the Impact as a designated player in July, sat out the game with a knee injury. Montreal star striker Marco Di Vaio started on the bench after travelling to Italy for the midweek announcement that his old club Bologna is being bought by a consortium that includes Impact owner Joey Saputo. Di Vaio, who is retiring at the end of the season, came on in the 79th minute. The Italian nearly recorded the winner in stoppage time but his shot deflected wide. The Impact visit the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday in the final match of the CONCACAF Champions League group stage before returning home for its season finale Saturday against D.C. United in Di Vaios swansong.———Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter. Pau Gasol Jersey . Wawrinka, who is seeded fourth, is in the top half of the draw with Serbian Novak Djokovic. Fielder ended 4-for-5 with a solo homer, while Avila was 4-for-4 with two runs scored for the Tigers, who put the brakes on a three-game skid and rebounded from a loss in Mondays opener. Stan Wawrinka kept his hopes of a semi-final berth alive with a straight-sets victory over Marin Cilic at the ATP World Tour Finals on Wednesday night. The win helped US Open champion Wawrinka extend his head-to-head lead to 11-2, having now won his last seven matches against Cilic, who is out. Did you know... The last time a player lost his opening match and went on to win the title was in 2009 when Nikolay Davydenko surprised everyone to win at Londons O2 Arena. Shots of the matchWawrinka showed he is not just all about power as he lured Cilic into the net before showing a delicious touch to lob him. Wawrinka showed that hes not all about power with this delicate lob... But when it does come to pure power, Wawrinka can produce it when it most matters - especially on the backhand side. But the Swiss star does possess an awful lot of power on that missile of a backhand... Expert analysisGreg Rusedski: Hes back in business. He played great tonight. Cilic played him into form. Hes very confident going up against Marin because Marin isnt willing to come forward which allowed him to hit many groundstrokes and get a feeling for the ball. By the end of it, he was playing lights out tennis. Its not what Andy Murray wanted to see, an in-form Wawrinka on Friday.Peter Fleming: This match seemed to turn his game around. He was hitting the ball well and hes not going to be an easy guy to put out. Wawrinka joins Leif Shiras at the SkyPad to examine his victory over Cilic The matchThere was very little to choose between the two players, who both packed a punch with some blistering winners. Cilic had made very few inroads into Wawrinkas serve until he earned a set point at 5-4. However, the Swiss star quickly shut the door with a brave 100mph second serve into the body. The Wawrinka backhand was at its blistering best in the second set Quite predictably, it headed into a tiebreak, and it was the third seed who started forcing the errors from Cilics racket, which was enough to take the set.Just when it looked as though Wawrinka had the momentum, Cilic struck in the opening game of the second set. Wawrinka was happy to get his first victory in London after defeating Cilic Despite being hampered by a knee injury recently, the 31-year-old is determined to finish his season on a high, and responded with some fearsome hitting of his own to level in the fourth game.It was enough to send the tight contest into another tiebreaker. And Wawrinka struck a huge blow with an unstoppable 98mph forehand for the mini-break which he never relinquished to set up a mouth-watering clash against Murray. And while the Edmonton skater earned bronze in the mens 500 metres, he was agonizingly close to standing higher on the podium. Gregg was paired with Tae-Bum Mo of South Korea, this years world champion in the distance. The two men played cat-and-mouse to start the race. Mos opening strides were quicker, but Gregg caught him at 100 metres. Their finish seemed a dead heat, but Mo actually edged Gregg by three thousandths of a second. Ronald Mulder of the Netherlands knocked Mo out of gold-medal position two pairings later in a time of 34.41 seconds. Mos time was 34.52.3 ahead of Greggs 34.52.6. Gregg will race another 500 on Sunday at the Oval and aims for a medal upgrade. "Every World Cup, including this one, in Calgary Ive won a medal so Im happy with that," Gregg said. "Theyve all been bronze so I want to make it a little better than that. Im always getting beat out by the thousandths in Calgary." Greggs bronze was Canadas lone medal on the first day of racing. He lost speed to the South Korean on the turn coming into the home stretch at the Olympic Oval. "You go into the year not really knowing who is going to go fast," Gregg said. "You see some times, but now everyone is at the World Cup and everyone has peaked, so you get to see where you are in the world a little bit. "To know that Im up there with even a less-than-ideal race, it gives me lots of confidence going forward." Sang-Hwa Lee of South Korea won the womens 500 in 39.91 seconds, which was .11 off her world record. Claudia Pechstein of Germany was the winner of the womens 3,000 metres in three minutes 59.04. Koen Verweij of the Netherlands took the mens 1,500 metres in one minute 42.78 seconds ahead of runner-up and world-record holder Shani Davis of the U.S. in 1:43.11. Denny Morrison of Fort St. John, B.C., was the world champion in the 1,500 two years ago, but broke his leg cross-country skiing midway through last season. Morrison says his leg his fully healed, but hes race rusty and finished 11th in a time of 1:44.42. "If you would have talked to me after a race like this in 2009, I would probably hardly have talked to you guys and probably would be freaking out throwing things around the change room," Morrison told reporters. "That doesnt help anything. All I can do is be motivated by what happened and use that to help me focus on what I need to do next. I dont think its discouraging. I know I have a few things to work on. Im pretty sure I can identify what they are already." The Essent ISU World Cup continues Saturday with another womens 500 metres, the mens 1,000 metres and the womens 1,500 metres. Olympic 1,000-metre champion Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., will race that distance Sunday. Nesbitt was 13th and Marsha Hudey of Regina 19th in the womens 500. Winnipegs Brittany Schussler and Ottawas Ivanie Blondin finished 13th and 16th respectively in the womens 3,000. Saskatoons Lucas Makowsky was 17th in the mens 1,500. William Dutton of Regina was 15th in the mens 500. Gregg is the son of former Edmonton Oilers defenceman Randy Gregg and two-time Olympic speed skater Kathy (Vogt) Gregg. His sister Jessica is a short-track speedskater who won Olympic silver in the relay in 2010. Jamie Gregg was eighth in the 500 in 2010. The 28-year-old captured his first World Cup gold medal in 2012 in Berlin. Hes Canadas heir-apparent to Jeremy Wotherspoon in the 500 metres, although Wotherspoon is attempting a comeback and intends to race at Olympic trials this winter. "Ill step into that role," Gregg said. "We have a lot of young guys coming up and Jeremy is also coming back to try and take it back from me so Ive got to fight him off as well. I love the competition. We have some really fast guys." Wotherspoon and Gregg are in-laws, as Gregg is married to Jeremys sister Danielle Wotherspoon. Speed Skating Canada will hold Olympic trials in late December and early January in Calgary, but some countries will choose their Olympic speedskaters based on their results at World Cups. Pechstein says shes qualified for her sixth Winter Games because of her victory in the 3,000. The 41-year-old wants a 10th Olympic medal in Sochi. Shes won five gold, two silver and a pair of bronze in an Olympic career that started in 1992 in Albertville, France. Pechstein did not race in Vancouver. The International Skating Union banned her for two years in 2009 based on irregularities in her blood, although she hadnt tested positive for illegal substances. The most successful German Olympian fought her sanction in both the Court of Arbitration for Sport and in Swiss federal court, but was not allowed to race in Vancouver. Pechstein was the 5,000 metre champion in 2002 and would have competed against Canadas Clara Hughes, the 2006 Olympic champion. Hughes won bronze in Vancouver. Pechstein resumed winning world championship medals in 2011 after serving her suspension. She is currently suing the ISU for loss of income. "When I get a victory, its good for me and I think the ISU doesnt like it," Pechstein said. "Its also good motivation for me. "For me, I can go so relaxed. I never used doping, never used any illegal things. This I know. This is a nice comeback with this today and last season and two years ago too. For me, I can stand up every morning and look in the mirror and Im clear. This is the important thing." ' ' '

La Quinta, CA ( - Michael Putnam used a big back nine to surge up the leaderboard and shoot a 9-under 63 in Thursdays first round, giving him a 1-shot lead at the Humana Challenge. Putnam, who has never won on the PGA Tour, has three career victories on the Tour, two of which came in 2013. In five events on tour this season, Putnam has missed the cut twice and his best finish is a tie for 26th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Over the first three rounds, players will alternate between playing the Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus Private Courses at PGA West along with La Quinta Country Club. Sundays final round will be contested on the Palmer Course.
