TORONTO -- Rookie right-hander Marcus Stroman continues to sparkle for the Blue Jays. The 23-year-old blanked Texas for seven innings and Dan Johnson drove home two runs as Toronto held on to defeat the lowly Rangers 4-1 Saturday afternoon. Stroman has held opposing teams to three earned runs or less in eight of his nine career starts. And he bounced back from that lone subpar outing -- when he gave up six runs in 3 2/3 innings last time out -- with a gritty outing that got better as the day wore on. The five-foot-nine 185-pounder has blanked two of his last three opponents. "Since hes been here, hes been really good -- especially for a young kid," said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "You guys all know the arms there. But hes a lot more polished than I thought he was going to be. And he has a way of dialling it up at crunch time. "He got into a little jam there (in the fourth inning), got a couple of big punchouts after it was first and second no outs. Thats what hes capable of. ... Hes just a great competitor with a great arm. He pitches to win. Hes not worried about anything else but winning a game and it shows." After spending time in the bullpen, Stroman has gone 4-2 as a starter with a 2.50 ERA. The 2010 first-round pick kept the Rangers to four hits during his stint, striking out five with no walks while throwing 107 pitches including 70 strikes. After giving up back-to-back singles to open the fourth inning, he retired 12 straight with four strikeouts. "That definitely pumped me up going into the next inning ... That was huge," Stroman said of the fourth-inning escape. "Definitely a momentum shift." Stroman said it was all about raising ones intensity. "I feel like Im really able to get in the zone when I need to, and really focus and make big pitches on crucial counts. That was one of those moments and it was big. It was big for the team, it was big for us to kind of get us going." Toronto, which outhit Texas 12-6, survived the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth inning thanks to a Dustin McGowan strikeout -- his third of the inning -- of Jake Smolinski. "It got a little hairy there at the end," Gibbons acknowledged. Left-hander Aaron Loup, rather than right-handed closer Casey Janssen who was laid low by either food poisoning or a bug, pitched the ninth for his third save. An opening walk was negated by J.P. Arencibia hitting into a double play before Rougned Odor flied out. After dropping the series opener 5-1, Toronto (50-48) came into the game having lost three straight and nine of its last 11. "We desperately needed that today," Gibbons said of the win. Despite snapping an eight-game losing streak with Fridays win, the numbers were still ugly for injury-plagued Texas. The Rangers (39-58) came into Saturdays contest 2-12 in July and had lost 14 of 16 and 22 of 26. Texas winning percentage of .406 was worst in the majors. Misfiring at the plate in recent days, the Jays looked to find runs any way they could before a sellout crowd of 45,802 under the roof at Rogers Centre thanks to rain. Centre-fielder Colby Rasmus showed that in the fifth when, facing a shift, he bunted down the empty third-base line to get on base. That led to some jawing with Texas starter Colby Lewis. "Everybody saw it," Lewis said. "Youre up by two runs with two outs and lay down a bunt. I dont think thats the way the game should be played. I let him know and that was about it. "I just told him I didnt appreciate it," he added, accusing Rasmus of "looking out for batting average." The Jays saw it more as scratching out offence. "Sometimes youve got to force some things," said Gibbons. Toronto, outscored 18-4 in their three previous losses, looked to steal bases, sacrifice and take advantage of any fielding hesitation by the Rangers to get on base and advance runners. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt but the home side scratched out enough offence to win. Stroman and Lewis were both coming off rough starts, coincidentally on consecutive days against the Angels. Lewis coughed up 13 runs in 2 1/3 innings, raising his ERA to 6.54 from 5.51. Lewis (6-7) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked three. Both teams feature patchwork rosters due to the injury bug, with seven active catchers between them. The Rangers injury woes grew Saturday when right-fielder Alex Rios sprained his right ankle in his first trip to the plate. Rios, a former Jay, was unable to continue his at-bat and left the game. He was replaced by Daniel Robertson. X-rays were negative and Rios was listed as day-to-day. It was also a painful first inning for Jays catcher Dioner Navarro, who fouled a ball off the top of his shin but was able to continue. The Jays opened the scoring in their half of the fourth with Johnson doubling home Rasmus, who had singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. One out later, Johnson went to third on a successful Anthony Gose bunt. Munenori Kawaskis infield single made it 2-0, with Toronto leaving two on the bases. Toronto added to its lead in the seventh on consecutive singles by Cabrera, Bautista and Navarro. After Rasmus reached first on a fielders choice, Johnson brought Bautista home on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Brett Cecil and McGowan followed Stroman in the eighth, when the Rangers finally got on the board via an Elvis Andrus RBI single. Cecil had opened the inning by yielding a walk and a single. McGowan seemed to have the situation in control when he struck out the ever-dangerous Adrian Beltre with two outs. But Beltre made it to first base to load the bases thanks to a Navarro passed ball and McGowan found himself needing another out. The Jays have won six of their last seven series against the Rangers in Toronto. Saturdays win gave them a chance to make it seven of eight. Ray Black Brewers Jersey . In what might be his last appearance at the Bell Centre, Martin Brodeur is expected to get the start for the New Jersey Devils tonight as the Montreal Canadiens will try to complete a sweep of the season series. Viewers in the Canadiens region can watch the game on TSN Habs at 7:30pm et/8:30pm at. The game is also available on TSN Radio 690 in Montreal. Unless the Canadiens and Devils meet in the playoffs, Tuesdays encounter in Montreal will be the final meeting between the clubs in 2013-14. Brodeur, a Montreal native, is 44-19-1 with five ties and a 1.85 GAA in his career against the Habs. The Habs are 2-0 against New Jersey so far this season, taking both tilts of a home- and-home series on Dec. 2 and 4. Carey Price will start for the Canadiens. The Canadiens havent swept New Jersey in a season series since winning all three encounters during the 1998-89 campaign. The Devils enter Tuesday on a 2-0-2 point streak, but the clubs shootout woes continued in its last outing as New Jersey fell 2-1 in Sundays setback at Toronto. Peter DeBoers club has an 0-7 record in shootouts this season and his players have combined to go 1-for-23 in the penalty shot round. New Jersey had won two in a row before losing Sunday against the Maple Leafs. James van Riemsdyk scored the lone goal of the shootout to help Toronto earn the extra point. Van Riemsdyk opened the games decisive phase with a nifty backhander past Cory Schneider before Jonathan Bernier turned aside all three New Jersey shooters to give the Leafs the victory. Adam Henrique and Ryane Clowe scored regulation goals for the Devils, while Schneider made 23 saves in defeat. "I couldnt have drawn it up much better than how we played and the effort we got," DeBoer said. New Jersey is 9-12-4 as the visiting team this season and is making the second stop on a four-game road trip tonight. Montreal is 3-1-1 in January and is coming off Saturdays overtime win against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. Andrei Markovs second goal of the contest, coming at 1:28 of the extra session, lifted the Canadiens to their second win in three game. Markov blasted a shot from the left point to beat Corey Crawford for the decisive tally. It was the fifth goal of the season for the veteran defenseman and his first game-winner. "It was gut-wrenching. I couldnt wait for it to be over," said Habs assistant coach J.J. Daigneault. "Still, this was probably our teams best 60-minute effort of the season." Carey Price needed to make only 19 saves in the win for the Canadiens and he expects to be in net again on Tuesday. Price is 8-9-1 with a 2.39 GAA in 18 career games against the Devils. Montreal has won four of its last five meetings against New Jersey overall. The Devils have lost two straight in Quebec after winning their previous eight at the Bell Centre. Frontcourt players such as Josh Smith, David West, Andrew Bynum and Al Jefferson also can become free agents Monday at midnight EDT. Howard heads the class after spending one largely unhappy season with the Lakers. They would like him back and can outspend other suitors by about $30 million, according to NBA rules, but teams such as Houston, Dallas and Atlanta will try to persuade him to take less money for more enjoyment. He didnt fit right in Mike DAntonis offence and could end up with his third home in less than a year, having been dealt from Orlando to Los Angeles just last August. Bynum was in that deal, too, going from the Lakers to Philadelphia in what was a four-team trade. He sat out all season because of knee problems and could leave without ever playing a game for the 76ers. The Clippers are much happier with Paul, and he has plenty of reasons to stay in Los Angeles. The Clippers won their first Pacific Division title last season and will be coached now by Doc Rivers, who headed across the country after the Clippers sent a futurre first-round draft pick to Boston to let him out of his contract.dddddddddddd Players can agree to deals any time after free agency opens but cant sign until July 10, after next seasons salary cap has been set. DeMarcus Cousins returned from a one-game absence for Sacramento and filled it up, but it wasnt enough to end a losing streak that reached four games. Cousins posted 22 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks but picked up three fouls late in the game and fouled out for the third time this month. Rudy Gay scored a game-high 26 points. Portland locked down defensively early in the fourth quarter to erase Sacramentos lead, which was nine points following Ray McCallums layup early in the period. A 12-2 run ensued, with Nicolas Batum hitting a 3-pointer at 5:03 to cap the surge and give the Blazers an 84-83 edge. Hall of Famer Paul Coffey was recently suspended by the Greater Toronto Hockey League for using a "discriminatory slur," according to The Hockey News. THN.com reported Wednesday that Coffey, who coaches his son Blakes Toronto Marlboros midget AAA team, was involved in a verbal confrontation last Friday during their playoff game against the Mississauga Senators. The hockey publication added that Coffey was originally assessed a gross misconduct penalty for a discriminatory slur and was handed a three-game suspension after an automatic investigation by the GTHL. Coffey was not behind the bench with his team for their playoff game on Tuesday night. The GTHL would not confirm that Coffey was suspended, as its not league policy to disclose its suspensions. However, the league did confirm that the altercation happened and was not considered too serious. "From what I understand, the two opposing coaches went at each other near the end of the game," GTHL President John Gardner told The Toronto Sun on Wednesday. "People do and say crazy things at this time of year, its the playoffs. I think it has been blown out of proportion. "Paul Coffey is a good coach who has done nothing wrong since being involved in this league. But lets face it, hockey is an emotional game and people sometimes say things they dont mean." Neither the Marlies nor Coffey have commented about the incident or the decision, but an official from Mississauga did tell the The Hockey News that the Senators lobbied the GTHL to be lenient, sharing the same sentiment that the situation was being blown out of proportion. "Obviously there has to be punishment, regardless of who is involved," Gardner added. "But in my opinion, I would say this was a minor incident." Coffey, 52, played for 21 seasons in the NHL, winning four Stanley Cups and three Norris trophies as the leagues best defenceman. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. Its his job to lose. "To me, this is my team until someone else tells me otherwise," Hoyer said. And after a rain-soaked practice Monday morning, the evidence would point to that still being the case, as Hoyer took his reps with the first-team offence, relegating Manziel to second-team duty. He may be fighting for the starting job, but for now, the Browns remain Hoyers team. That doesnt mean Manziel wont get the opportunity to prove himself before Cleveland takes on Washington next Monday night. Browns coach Mike Pettine said the reps will be mixed this week, and a decision on the starting quarterback for the second preseason game will come later in the week. In other words, nothing is locked up. However, Hoyer still has the inside track at the starting job hes been maintaining to this point. And it might not be that tenuous of a lead, according to Pettine. As far as hes concerned, Hoyer is in the same position hes been in all of training camp. "Nothings changed. If there was a significant change on the depth chart, it would be reflected on the field," Pettine said. But Hoyer and Manziel havent been able to create much distance between each other. In Saturdays preseason opener, a 13-12 loss to the Detroit Lions, Hoyer completed 6 of 14 passes for 92 yards. Manziel was 7 of 11 for 63 yards, but flashed the ability to use his legs by rushing for 27 yards on six carries. Neither quarterback was able to get his team into the end zone. Neither looked particularly sharp in sloppier, rainy conditions on Monday. Hoyer threw two interceptions, one each to Joe Haden and Buster Skrine. On Hadens interception, Hoyers intended receiver, Miles Austin, slipped in the slick grass and allowed Haden to get the pick. AAs for Manziel, he didnt show much in the way of a rhythm during practice, but the confident rookie is simply going to try to make the best of his opportunities, whatever they may be.dddddddddddd "I dont expect anything," Manziel said. "I expect to come out and get the reps and get the teamwork that Im told Im going to get. I hope to do whatever the coaches tell me." That includes playing in less than ideal conditions. Rather than move the practice inside when it started to rain, Pettine kept his team on the field to get some playing time in bad weather. "Im sure we need to get used to playing in a little bit different conditions. Cant be perfect every day," Manziel said. As for what Manziel could do to potentially win the starting job, Pettine says there are a few things Manziel can continue to do, but he will take everything into consideration. "Just continue to master his craft, run the offence, be efficient," Pettine said. "I dont think its a tangible thing where you can say if he does this, then this will happen." The race remains up in the air, but eventually, someone is going to have to win the starting quarterback job for the Browns. "If youre going to put a job at a starting role, Ive always felt that needs to be earned," Pettine said. Now Hoyer or Manziel just need to do it. NOTES: TE Jordan Cameron (shoulder) returned to practice in a no-contact brown jersey. He didnt participate much in team drills, but did catch a pass from Manziel and was able to turn up the sideline. . WR Josh Gordon sat out practice with an unspecified minor injury. Other players riding the bikes included WR Nate Burleson (hamstring), FB MarQueis Gray (concussion), CB Justin Gilbert (groin), DL Billy Winn (abdomen), LB Darius Eubanks (shoulder) and LT Joe Thomas, who was getting a scheduled day off. Conceivably, McDavid could forgo his final season in the OHL next year and sign with Medvescak, but that would seriously compromise McDavids NHL draft stock rendering such a move beyond unlikely. SEATTLE -- Josh Hamiltons attempt to beat out an infield grounder with a headfirst slide into first base landed him on the bench for up to two months. The 2010 AL MVP was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday by the Los Angeles Angels with a torn ligament in his left thumb. He was hurt trying to hustle down the line and beat out a grounder in the seventh inning of Tuesday nights loss to Seattle. Hamilton was thrown out, but the consequences of his decision ended up being far greater. "The news sucks. Anytime you play and youre playing hard and having fun, the last thing you want to do is do something that is going to cause you to miss time and maybe hurt your team in the long run," Hamilton said. "If I could see the future, obviously, I wouldnt do it." Los Angeles said an MRI Wednesday revealed a complete tear of the thumbs ulnar collateral ligament. After initially saying hand and wrist specialist Dr. Steven Shin would operate at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedics in Los Angeles, the Angels said Hamilton will be examined by Shin on Friday to determine whether surgery is needed. Hamilton was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and outfielder J.B. Shuck was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake. Hamilton said he believed it was just a jammed thumb, but when he tried throwing in the outfield between innings he knew something might be wrong. Hamilton told manager Mike Scioscia to have someone pinch hit for him in the ninth. Ian Stewart batted for Hamilton and struck out with the potential tying run on base in a 5-3 loss. "Its definitely unfortunate but I think as a team you have to be able to absorb and be deep enough to absorb injuries to players and Josh is a special talent who is off to a great start for us. Well do our best to fill that void," Scioscia said. &qquot;Over the years, weve had a lot of our key players miss significant time, but weve been able to absorb it and move on.dddddddddddd Thats what we have to focus on doing now for the next six, eight weeks, whatever the time frame is going to end up being." Scioscia said the Angels lineup could see mixing and matching while Hamilton is out. Collin Cowgill was in the lineup in left field and leading off, with Kole Calhoun dropped to sixth in the order and Howie Kendrick moved up to Hamiltons usual No. 5 slot. A five-time All-Star, Hamilton has struggled since signing a $125 million, five-year contract with the Angels before the 2013 season. He hit a career-low .250 last year with 21 homers and 79 RBIs, his poorest power numbers since 2009. He was batting .207 with 25 RBIs through June 23, then hit .289 with 54 RBIs during the rest of the season. Hamilton strained a calf muscle during a baserunning drill on Feb. 25 and didnt play in his first spring training game until March 17. He is hitting .444 with two homers and six RBIs in 27 at-bats this season. Hamilton believes he can still keep his timing down with his swing even while hes sidelined. "Disappointing in general that youve got to miss some time, because as a player you prepare the whole off-season to come in and do what you can to help contribute to your team winning ballgames," he said. "Thats the most disappointing part of the injury." The injury rekindled the debate about sliding into first base. Hamilton wasnt the only player to make that choice in Tuesdays game. Seattles Michael Saunders had an awkward slide into first base running out a ground ball. "Its just part of who I am. Ive done that a lot," Hamilton said. "Who knows if I will ever do that again?" TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays have used their big bats to power their way to victories over their nine-game winning streak. On Wednesday night, they showed that stellar defence and a little small ball can get the job done too. With pinch-runner Kevin Pillar aboard after Dioner Navarro opened the bottom of the ninth with a single, Anthony Gose dropped down an excellent bunt along the first-base line. Reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo threw wide to first and Pillar came all the way around to score to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay and their first walk-off win of the season. "Its not every day youre going to come out and score 10 runs," said Toronto infielder Steve Tolleson. "Sometimes you have to fight tooth and nail to win. The guys today really showed that and thats why we pulled through." Toronto opened the series with a 10-5 win and followed with a 9-6 victory a night later. On Wednesday, in what was likely the Blue Jays finest defensive effort of the year, Toronto stifled Tampa Bay all over the diamond. After both teams scored a pair of early runs, Gose made an all-world catch against the centre-field wall in the third inning to keep the game tied. In the sixth, Melky Cabrera offered a highlight-reel moment of his own with a great leaping grab against the wall in left field. Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C., and Edwin Encarnacion got into the act too later in the frame. James Loney hit a hard chopper that the Canadian sprawled to retrieve in shallow right field. Encarnacion dived to snag the throw to first and managed to keep his foot on the bag for the out. In the eighth, it was Toronto third baseman Juan Franciscos turn. He made a great diving snag off the bat of leadoff hitter David DeJesus and an inning later, Lawrie was at it again by barehanding a slow chopper on the fly and whipping it to first base in time. "It was just one of those days that we just refused to lose," Tolleson said. On the winning play, Pillar broke for third when he saw the ball roll down the left-field line and third-base coach Luis Rivera made a gutsy decision to send him home with nobody out. "I wanted to score," Pillar said. "When I saw the ball go by, I mean Luis is aggressive over there. I mean worst-case scenario, Gose is probably standing at third base with one out. He made a good call there." The speedy Gose has been showing consistency with his bunting ability this season and it paid off. "I got it down tonight," he said. "I just tried to move the runner and good things happened." Toronto starter Liam Hendriks and Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer both gave up two earned runs over six innings. Blue Jays left-hander Rob Rasmussen came on for the seventh and Matt Joyce greeted him with a ground-rule double. Toronto manager John Gibbons quickly went to the bullpen for Dustin McGowan, who gave up just one walk over two scoreless innings. Aaron Loup (2-1) worked the ninth as Toronto (32-22) completed the three-game sweep. Encarnacion, who has tied a club record with 14 homers this month, drove in a pair of runs with a first-inning single. Jose Reyes opened the game with a single and moved to third on a single by Jose Bautista before Encarnacion cashed them in. The Rays tied it in the second inning. Joyce doubled and scored when Wil Myers followed with a two-run shot, his fifth homer of the season. Tampa Bay (23-31) entered the series on a four-game winning streak. The three straight losses have sent the Rays into the division basement. "Its been pretty much how the season has gone to this point, but were going to change it," said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon. "All these weird awkward breaks, were just not catching them." Toronto, meanwhile, has won 14 of its last 16 games and 19 of 24 overall. Its the Blue Jays longest winning streak since an 11-gamer last June. "I think thats a pretty exciting win I think all around for the team," Gose said. "Three straight sweeps and a sweep of another A.L. East opponent in the Rays, who weve had trouble with over the last couple years. It was a huge win." Its going to be nice to see some of the faces over there. But part of hockey is having fun competing against your friends, former teammates, colleagues. This is a chance to play against a team and an organization that does mean a lot to me.A fifth-round pick back in 1999, Miller was the face of the Sabres for nine seasons and helped the team to the Eastern Conference final in both 2006 and 2007.A lot things to be proud of coming out of Buffalo, said Miller, who signed with the Canucks as a free agent in July. I know a lot of those guys on that team are proud and they work hard, he said. When youre not getting the results and people are talking about it theres that place where you can kind of go where you can get numb and you dont get as emotionally charged ... or you remind yourself (why you) play.I think last year I was getting a little bit numb for a stretch, but I reminded myself why I like to play and got re-energized by the challenge of just going out to play. I hope they find that energy and continue to play hard because they have a lot of talent on that team.Miller has found plenty of success so far this season with Vancouver, recording 23 of his teams 26 wins, and set a personal shutout streak of 200 minutes 45 seconds as the Canucks continue to battle for a Western Conference playoff spot.I identified myself for so long as a Sabre, said Miller. Its going to be a little bit strange, but I have aligned myself with this organization and the goals we have here. I identify myself now as proud to be a Canuck and working toward our goals here.Note: With a couple of injuries up front, the Canucks recalled forward Ronalds Kenins from the AHLs Utica Comets on Thursday.—Follow @JClipperton_CP on Twitter ' ' '
CONCORD, N.C. -- Jimmie Johnson is hoping hes on the verge of turning around a disappointing season. The six-time Sprint Cup champion won the pole Thursday night for the Coca-Cola 600, turning a lap at 194.911 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the third round of NASCARs knockout qualifying format. It was the first pole of the year for Johnson, who has yet to win a race this season. "It certainly shows that were going to be strong this weekend," Johnson said. "I dont know that it sends the same message that winning two or three races will send. But I would love to rattle off two or three wins and have people fear the No. 48 as they have in the past. I dont think a pole position does that to the garage area, but you have to start somewhere." Brad Keselowski qualified second and will start on the front row for the seventh time this season. Kasey Kahne was third, followed by Danica Patrick and Clint Bowyer. Sprint Cup points leader Jeff Gordons struggles in practice runs carried over to qualifying. He didnt make it out of the first round of qualifying and will start 27th -- one spot behind last weeks All-Star race winner, Jamie McMurray. Johnson has won six Sprint Cup races at the Charlotte, twice from the pole. He said he isnt concerned that he hasnt won a race this season, which would secure a spot in the Chase for the Cup. What has bothered him is the lack of consistency. "We have been close to some wins and been pathetic at other tracks," Johnson said. Johnson was asked if he agrees with the notion that some detractors have enjoyed the fact that he hasnt won yet. "I think there are some people getting satisfaction out of it," Johnson said. "But if I win, I win too much. If I dont win, they say you arent winning enough. So it doesnt matter what I do, I cant win." Johnson was a non-factor in the All-Star race last week at the track in his bid for a three-peat. He said his crew changed the setup in his car this past week, borrowing some advice from teammate Kasey Kahne. "We learned some things from last week," Johnson said. Keselowski said he was bummed he got beat out for the pole -- again. It was the sixth time this season he has qualified second. "Its like kissing your sister," Keselowski said. Patrick will start in the top 10 for the third straight week. She was fast throughout the qualifying session with the top lap in the second round of 194.595. But her lap in third round was more than one second slower. Joey Logano, who is off to the best start of his young career with two wins this season, will start eighth and will be considered one of the favourites on Sunday. Logano has already won twice this season and has historically run well at Charlotte with three top-five and six top-10 finishes in 10 career Cup starts at Charlotte. Track temperatures reached 106 degrees at the start of qualifying, but cooled significantly as the sun set behind the grandstand and the speeds picked up dramatically. Drivers had problems in the first two turns early in qualifying complaining their cars were tight, and had to adjust on the clock. Under the new format all cars are allowed 25 minutes to qualify with the top 24 based advancing to 10-minute session in round two. From that group, the top 12 advanced to the final, five-minute round. "The great thing about the new qualifying sessions is there are multiple opportunities to get it right and that is a good thing," Keselowski said. "That is why it is so much fun." PHILADELPHIA -- If the Flyers continue to play as well as they did on Saturday, theyll have little trouble making the playoffs. Matt Read scored a pair of goals to lift the Flyers to a convincing 4-0 victory over the short-handed Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. "We were looking for a game like that a long time ago where we make sure that everybody follows the game plan and everybody plays 60 minutes," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who had a pair of assists. "It feels pretty good." Scott Hartnell and Vincent Lecavalier also scored for Philadelphia, which is in the middle of a tightly bunched pack of teams battling for a playoff spot. The Penguins, who are comfortably atop the Metropolitan Division, were shut out for the fourth time this season. Pittsburgh played without its third- and fourth-leading scorers, Chris Kunitz (lower body) and James Neal (concussion). The Flyers neutralized Pittsburgh stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. "They did a lot of what we expected," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "We werent able to handle it, and in all aspects of the game we werent good." Besides Kunitz and Neal, the Penguins continued to be without top winger Pascal Dupuis (knee) and defencemen Kris Letang (stroke) and Paul Martin (hand). But Bylsma wouldnt use injuries as an excuse. "We have capable guys, guys who have done well for us before," he said. "We have to find ways to win within our roles regardless of whos in there. We werent able and ready to do that today." Philadelphia played like the first-place team in a matchup between two the leagues top rivals. "We want to finish higher and want home-ice advantage," Giroux said. "Its there for us to take but we have to keep playing like this." The Flyers came out with a high-energy attack from the opening faceoff in one of their best efforts of the season. Steve Mason made 25 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 23rd of his career. "Everything felt very under control," Mason said. Leading 2-0 after one period, Philadelphia made it 4-0 with a pair of second-period goals. Lecavalier made it 3-0 when he scored on a breakaway after taking a stellar pass from Luke Schenn. Then, Read tallied his second of the game by finishing a beautifully executed 3-on-1 with Giroux and Sean Couturier with 17 seconds remaining in the period to give Philadelphia a 4-0 advantage. Couturier passed to Giroux in the slot and Giroux faked the shot before going back to Couturier, who whipped it across the ice to a wide-open Read. Read tapped home the goal past a sprawling Fleury, who was fooled by Girouxs fake. "Its hard to miss those when theyre right on your stick," Read said. "I benefited from those two making a great play." Mason kept Pittsburgh scoreless with a strong second period that included a point-blank stop of Jayson Megna six minutes into the period and a solid save on Simon Despres try from the left circle with 33 seconds left. The Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two nice goals in the first period. Hartnell opened the scoring with a power-play goal 3:50 into the game by one-timing Girouxs pass from the slot. The shot changed directions when hitting Brooks Orpiks stick and went off Fleurys left shoulder and in. A little more than four minutes later, Read scored a short-handed tally on a one-timer from close range after taking a deft pass from Couturier from behind the net and firing it over Fleurys left shoulder. The Flyers unveiled an 8-foot, 1,300-pound statue of Hall of Fame coach Fred Shero prior to the game on the former site of the Spectrum, which is adjacent to the Wells Fargo Center. Shero coached the Flyers for seven seasons and won a pair of Stanley Cups, in 1974 and 75. Sheros son, Ray, who is the Penguins general manager, was among those who attended the pregame ceremony. SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Top-seeded Tommy Haas came back to defeat Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to the Brazil Open semifinals on Friday. Haas broke Zeballos serve twice in a row in the decisive set to close the match and take a step closer to his second final of the year. The 12th-ranked German lost to Marin Cilic in the final in Croatia earlier this month. Haas will next play Paolo Lorenzi of Italy, who reached his first ATP semifinal with an upset 7-6 (6), 6-7 (4), 6-4 win over fourth-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina. "Lorenzi has been around for a long time so this is a goal Im sure he has been waiting to achieve for a lifetime," Haas said. "He has nothing to lose and is going to try to go one more and get to his first ATP tour final. He is a dangerous player. Im going to have to try to play some of my best tennis." The 114th-ranked Lorenzi broke Monacos serve to go up 4-3 in the final set and held on to close the match in 2 hours, 34 minutes at the Ibirapuera Arena. The 32-year-old Italian squandered a match point before losing the second set, but was in control in the third to pick up the win in the ATP 250 tournament in South Americas biggest city. Lorenzi served 12 aces en route to his first pro semifinal after five career quarterfinal losses. "Im very happy to finally breakthrough to the semifinals," Lorenzi said. "Ive had a lot of opportunities before but was never able to come up with the victory at this stage. For sure this is one of my greatest weeks on the tour." The 43rd-ranked Monaco was trying to win his 200th clay-court match. He is the fifth-highest winner on the surface, behind Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Nicolas Almagro. Monaco had a set point in the first set but couldnt capitalize on it. "It was a very close match, he had his chances in the first set and I had mine in the second, it was very difficult," Lorenzi said. In another quarterfinal Friday, Federico Delbonis of Argentina easily beat Alberto Montanes of Spain 6-4, 6-3 in just over an hour. He will play either home-crowd favourite Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil or Martin Klizan of Slovakia. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is not playing at the clay-court tournament this year. Several players have been training regularly at the Pirate City complex since early January. When 36 pitchers and catchers held their first official workout on Thursday, a half-dozen position players were there, too. The Pirates won 94 games last season and advanced to the NL division series, their first post-season berth since 1992. They were eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the decisive Game 5. "Were still hungry," catcher Russell Martin said. "We did some special things last year, but everybody was disappointed with how it finished. I dont know what all the experts are saying, but I consider myself an expert and I think were going to do better than we did last year." They will have to do it without veteran right-hander A.J. Burnett, who has agreed to a one-year, $16 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Burnett made 61 starts and won 26 games over the past two seasons with the Pirates. After hearing that Burnett chose not to return to Pittsburgh, Martin sent a text message to his former teammate. "I wished him well," Martin said. "I hope he stays healthy and has a good season ... and, hopefully, well meet him in the playoffs and beat him." Many players admitted they were surprised and disappointed about Burnetts departure. Others preferred to look ahead. "Weve got to move on," reliever Mark Melancon said. "You cant live in the past. This is a new year and anythingg can happen.dddddddddddd" Even without Burnett, the Pirates have the makings of a solid starting rotation. Left-hander Francisco Liriano, who went 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA, is the likely opening day starter. Gerrit Cole (10-7, 3.22) and Charlie Morton (7-4, 3.26) also return. Wandy Rodriguez missed most of last season due to a sore left forearm. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Friday and is expected to be ready for the start of the season. "Physically, hes coming along very well," general manager Neal Huntington said. "Were going to take it slow with him this spring, so hes kind of on a different program than the other guys. But, hes healthy and feels good." New arrival Edinson Volquez, who signed a $5 million deal in December, and Jeff Locke could battle for the No. 5 job. The 26-year-old Locke won eight straight starts in the first half of the season and made the NL All-Star team. However, he went 2-5 with a 6.12 ERA over his final 12 starts and was shut down in September. "Making the playoffs last year meant a lot to us," Locke said. "The fans in Pittsburgh and the rest of the baseball world hadnt seen it in a while, but I know the 25 guys in our clubhouse knew it was something we could do. Were not under anybodys radar anymore, but I think the 25 guys this year will be up to the challenge." NOTES: The Pirates signed LHP Yao-Hsun Yang to a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to spring training. Yang, 31, made nine outings last year in the minor leagues in Japan. ' ' '

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Bernhard Langer birdied three of the last four holes for an 8-under 63 and a two-stroke lead Friday in the Champions Tours Toshiba Classic. Langer, the 2008 winner, had eight birdies in his bogey-free round at Newport Beach Country Club. The 56-year-old German won the season-opening event in Hawaii in January for his 19th victory on the 50-and-over tour. "I played really solid through the whole bag," Langer said. "I hit most of the greens in regulation and I was happy with just about every club in my bag." Fred Couples, Jeff Hart and Taiwans Chien Soon Lu shot 65, and Kenny Perry, Michael Allen, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf and Scott Simpson were another stroke back. Couples won the 2010 tournament, shooting 66-64-65. Last month in Florida, Allen beat Waldorf in a playoff in Boca Raton, and Triplett won in Naples. Defending champion David Frost opened with a 72. Langer tied for seventh in Boca Raton and tied for second in Naples. He has broken par in all 10 of his rounds this season and 19 of his last 20. "What happened with that one round," Langer joked. Langer topped the first-round leaderboard for the 18th time in his career. In the first 17, he has gone on to win six times. He also tied for second in the 2012 tournament. "I think it always helps when you play a course well," Langer said. "It certainly doesnt hurt. I think I know how to play well here." Langer is carrying four wedges this week and used them all to set up birdies. He took out his 3-wood and replaced it with a gap wedge, to accompany lob, sand and pitching wedges. "It depends on the course, but I have done this before," Langer said. "Sometimes Ill take the 3-wood out or the 3-iron out and replace it with a gap wedge." Newport Beach County Club is 6,584 yards, one of the shorter courses on the tour. Of Langers eight birdies, six were set up with wedge shots. Couples bogeyed the par-4 16th to drop out of a share of the lead, and matched Langer with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th. Adidas NMD R1 White . DENVER -- Gabriel Landeskog scored twice and Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 shots, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night and a 2-0 series lead. The Wild were unable to contain the quickness of teenager Nathan MacKinnon, who had a goal and three assists. Stastny, the star of Game 1, also had a goal and three assists. His empty-netter sealed the win after Marco Scandella made it a one-goal game with 1:19 remaining. Charlie Coyle also scored early for the Wild. Game 3 is Monday in Minnesota. Landeskogs second goal of the game gave Colorado a 3-1 lead with 8:01 remaining in the second and led the Wild to pull erratic starter Ilya Bryzgalov. Backup Darcy Kuemper stopped all 14 shots he faced, possibly opening up a goaltender controversy. Varlamov bottled up the Wild most of the night to help Colorado hold serve at home. The Avs are 12-0 in playoff series when capturing the first two contests since relocating to the Mile High City in 1995-96. The 18-year-old MacKinnon is having quite an NHL post-season debut. The Wild simply couldnt slow down the speedy MacKinnon, the first pick in the draft last summer. He blew past Wild defenders all evening and now has seven points in the series. In the opening game, Colorado rallied for a 5-4 win when Stastny scored the tying goal with 13.4 seconds remaining and then the OT winner. This time, no late-game theatrics were necessary. No bold decisions by coach Patrick Roy, either. Roys goalie simply played that well and only got stronger as the game went along. So, too, did the chants of "Varly, Varly, Varly," from the capacity crowd. Varlamov showed the form that led to 41 wins in the regular season, which broke Roys team record. He allowed a late goal by Scandella, but Stastny ended any drama with his goal in the waning seconds. Roy kept the line of Landeskog, Stastny and MacKinnon together. No surprise, really, since the trioo shined since being paired late in Game 1.dddddddddddd. They combined for 10 points on Saturday. Landeskog scored his first goal of the game on a nifty no-look pass from MacKinnon. He added another when MacKinnon beat a Wild defender, dished it over to Stastny, who made a spin pass to Landeskog. The captain lined it over Bryzgalovs shoulder. That was the end of Bryzgalovs night as Minnesota coach Mike Yeo sent in Kuemper. Bryzgalov struggled in both games in Colorado, giving up eight goals on 45 shots. Coyle put the Wild up on a crazy play early in the first period. Mikko Koivu sent a pass toward the goal that bounced off Varlamovs stick and hit a hard-charging Coyle just before he and defenceman Jan Hejda crashed into the goal, knocking the net off its pegs. The officials reviewed the play and confirmed Coyles second goal of the series. Two minutes later, MacKinnon took a pass at his own blue line, flew past two Wild players at centre ice, weaved between two defenders and lined a shot over Bryzgalovs arm. The Avalanche have adopted the motto "Why not us?" this season, putting the mantra on shirts, ball caps and even flashing it on the scoreboard. The slogan took root when Roy posed that question when he first came on board. It was taken to heart in October after former Avs defenceman Ray Bourque addressed the team at his restaurant in Boston. "This motto became pretty big and something we started to believe in," Maxime Talbot said. "So, why not us?" NOTES: Wild F Dany Heatley was a scratch. ... Colorado will likely be without its leading scorer Matt Duchene (knee) for this series, Roy said after the morning skate. ... Roy said F John Mitchell (head) is "not close" to a return. ... TORONTO -- Toronto defender Doneil Henry said hes not one to shy away when he makes mistakes and accepted full blame for a pair of miscues which resulted in New England Revolution goals. Henry, who missed three games with a knee injury, was charged with a handball in the penalty area in the 82nd minute as he went to block a strike from Patrick Mullins. On the ensuing penalty kick, Lee Nguyen picked up his fourth goal of the season, giving the Revolution a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon. Henrys turnover in the 24th minute led to the Revolutions first goal of the day. Daigo Kobayashi capitalized on the turnover and sent the through ball in for rookie Mullins, whose left-footed strike beat a diving Julio Cesar to tie the game 1-1. The goal was Mullins first of his MLS career. "That pass there on the first goal, thats my fault, I take full blame for that, but it was a tough match," said Henry. "I think we were very unfortunate not to put more goals in the back of the net, but at the end of the day, I have to get better, and thats on me. "Second half penalty, dying seconds of the game, thats unfortunate, no way I go to hand ball that, Im not even looking at the ball. I just tried to put my body in the way." In Henrys absence defender Bradley Orr filled in at centre-back, but TFC coach Ryan Nelsen felt Orr was playing out of position. "Doneil had been training really well and him and Steven (Caldwell) are centre-backs, Brad is not a centre-back," Nelsen explained. "Also, if you look at the attributes of Steven and Bradley, theyre very similar type players. I thought we needed some athleticism. "I didnt think that was our problem." The win was the first in eight tries at BMO Field for New England (4-3-2), and stretches its undefeated streak to four games. Toronto (3-4-0) has now lost three straight. Henry had an opportunity to redeem himself in the 84th minute as Michael Bradley sent in a cross off a set piece, but Henrys header sailed just over the bar. Then in the 86th minute, Gilberto put a header off a Mark Bloom cross off the post. "I thought the first half, early on, we created some good chances, just unlucky not to score, its frustrating. I thought we were the better side in the second half," said Jermain Defoe, who returned to the Reds lineup after missing five weeks due to a hamstring injury. "Overall I thought we were the better team, especially the second half, they didnt really create anything. We were the ones creating everything for the chances." Toronto opened the scoring in the sixth minute as Jacksons strike deflected off of Revolution defender A.J. Soares and got past keeper Bobby Shuttleworth. The goal was Jacksons first in MLS. Mullins had an excellent chance to give the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute with a strike in the area but put it wide of the goal. "The most important thing is that we got the three points, especially in a tough place to play on the road," said Mullins. "I think the big thing today was not me scoring or Lee scoring, it was a full team effort from start to finish and us getting the win." Cesar made a huge save off of Teal Bunbury in the 39th minute. A Revs midfielder sent the ball into the area for Bunbury, but he failed to get enough on the ball before Cesar was able to grab possession of the ball. Gilberto had a number of first half chances for Toronto. In the fifth minute, the forward put his strike just wide of the net. Then in the 30th minute, Gilbertos strike from the left side of the box went of the far goal post. Jackson was handed a yellow card in the 43rd minute for a dangerous play as his boot caught Revs defender Chris Tierney in the chest. "Its really difficult when you start slow, and they capitalized on that scoring early," said Revolution coach, Jay Heaps. "The first half was very open, it could have been 2-2 and I thought that the team fought hard and found a way to win as we didnt play our best so that is always nice." The two teams reconvene August 30 at Gillette Stadium in New England before a third and final meeting Oct. 25 at BMO Field. Vapormax Cheap Sale . The Oilers, losers of 11 straight, hope to avoid matching their longest home losing streak in team history as they host the Sharks on Sunday night. Edmonton is 0-7-1 at home since its last victory at Rexall Place on Oct. 27. Their eight-game slide as the host is one shy of a club-worst nine-game skid set from Oct. 16-Nov. 24, 1993. The Oilers fell to 0-7-4 in their last 11 games with Wednesdays 3-2 overtime road setback to the Winnipeg Jets, who got the winner on a redirection just 17 seconds into the extra frame. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Teddy Purcell lit the lamp for the Oilers, who fell to 0-12-4 versus the Western Conference this season. Ben Scrivens stopped 23 shots as Edmonton lost by one goal for the eighth time on its skid. I thought we played a textbook road game. We settled into a building that is extremely loud and volatile. I thought we played a mature road game, Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said. I thought we showed some growth from how we have played as of late. I believe if wee can bring that game every night were going to win a lot of hockey games.dddddddddddd. Edmonton has not won since consecutive road victories over Buffalo and the New York Rangers from Nov. 9-11 and is just two defeats shy of a club-record 13- game skid endured from Dec. 31, 2009-Jan. 30, 2010. Two straight meetings with the Sharks probably wont help. The Oilers have lost eight of nine and nine of their last 12 in this series and seven of the past nine played at home. Edmonton will visit San Jose on Tuesday. The Sharks also come in having won a season-high four in a row. That winning streak comes on the heels of an 0-2-2 slide and was extended with Saturdays 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Patrick Marleau scored the winning goal in the third period, while Logan Couture and Justin Braun had a goal and an assist each. Tommy Wingels added two helpers and Antti Niemi made 33 saves. Were finding a way to win and thats great to see, said Marleau. Backup Alex Stalock may get the start tonight for the Sharks. He recently returned from a knee injury and has not played since Nov. 8. Stalock beat the Oilers the only time he faced them, stopping 30-of-31 shots. ' ' '

And now that hes gotten his 500th in the regular season, he didnt make anything special out of this one, either. Marian Gaborik got the deciding goal in the shootout and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 Thursday night to make Sutter the 18th coach to reach that milestone. "Its a lot," Sutter acknowledged. "Ive been around a long time. Ive gotten a lot in shootouts, though." Sutter, who guided the Kings to their first Stanley Cup title in 2011-12 after Terry Murray was fired less than 2 1/2 months into that season, tied Montreal legend Hector "Toe" Blake on the career list and is fifth among active coaches behind Joel Quenneville, Ken Hitchcock, Lindy Ruff and Barry Trotz. "When Darryl came in two years ago, he did exactly what he needed to do and pressed the right buttons to get the team going -- because at that time we were taking one step forward and two steps back," goalie Jonathan quick said. Quick tied Rogie Vachon for the most career victories by a Kings goaltender and stopped Alex Ovechkin, who leads the league with 46 goals, on the Capitals second shot in the tiebreaker. Quick, who has spent his entire seven-year career with the Kings, is 171-115, with 11 overtime losses and 20 additional defeats that ended in shootouts. Vachon was 171-148 with 66 ties during his six-plus seasons with Los Angeles after he was traded by Montreal, and made all three of his All-Star game appearances during his time with the Kings. "It means a lot, and its special because wins are a team effort -- 20 guys each night contributing to every win," Quick said. "The biggest thing is Ive had the luxury of shootouts and Rogie didnt. If you took away those shootout wins, Id still be behind Rogie, so I guess Im fortunate they implemented that a few years back." Ovechkin is 2 for 15 this season in the tiebreaker and 25 for 83 in his career. "He has a couple of good moves and he was trying to go five-hole there," Quick said. "Maybe it hasnt gone his way this year, but hes had success in the past. So hes always somebody youre preparing for." Quick finished with 21 ssaves, losing his shutout bid with 7:36 remaining when Joel Ward extended his goal-scoring streak to a career-best four games with his 22nd of the season.dddddddddddd The Capitals got a power play in overtime after Kings defenceman Robyn Regehr was sent off for hooking Marcus Johansson at the 53-second mark. But Quick robbed Troy Brouwer on a point-blank shot from the low slot during the ensuing 4-on-3 advantage. Another of Quicks best saves came at 8:10 of the second period, when he stoned ex-teammate Dustin Penner with the heel of his glove at the last instant from the edge of the crease after leaving a bad rebound on Dmitry Orlovs slap shot from the left point. "Their goalie played great, and maybe stole it for them. But they also played a hard-nose physical game, and Im proud of our guys and the way they stood up to it," Washington coach Adam Oates said. "The second half of the game I thought we kind of took it to them. We had a lot of good chances, and I would say we carried the pace a little bit." The Kings, coming off their third consecutive one-goal loss following an eight-game winning streak, opened the scoring at 14:09 of the first period. Gaborik beat defenceman John Carlson to the puck after a long dump-in by Justin Williams and fed it in front to Anze Kopitar, who slid his 22nd goal between Jaroslav Halaks pads. Halak made 27 saves for Washington, after stopping 43 shots Tuesday in a 3-2 win at Anaheim. The eight-year veteran is 4-2-1 with a 2.13 goals-against average in seven starts since the Capitals acquired him in a trade with Buffalo on March 5 -- just five days after the Sabres picked him up in a trade with St. Louis. Captain Dustin Brown returned to the Kings lineup after missing two games because of a lower-body injury. What does a former player have to say?Jeff ONeill(Image via Shoebox Legends)What was it like to play in Hartford? For me it was awesome, I was drafted in Hartford by Hartford. In training camp I had the opportunity to live with Gordie Howes son Marty, and he kind of took me in. I was new to the National Hockey League and I was pretty much happy wherever I was. It was disappointing though because after my first-year there was already talk of leaving Hartford. It wasnt that tough for me because I couldnt build that relationship in town where I had connections or friends so it was good while it lasted but Raleigh was pretty fun place too. Was the transition tough?Like I said, a guy like Kevin Dineen who was Mr. Hartford Whaler, and the guys who had been there for a while, the trainers and people who were local, it was awfully difficult for them because they had roots put down and they had kids in school and they were part of a diehard Whalers nation that bled green and blue but everyone kind of picked up and went to Raleigh and made it work. Aside from the draft whats one of your fondest memories of Hartford?Unfortunately it was probably the last game. It was special to see all the fans and the way they supported the team and came out. Unfortunately the building wasnt packed like that enough and thats ultimately why the team left that city. Its a weird market because there is Rangers fans and Boston Bruins fans all around that area and there didnt seem to be enough of those diehard Whaler fans but Ill always remember that last game: Paying respect to Kevin Dineen and some of the longtime trainers, Chuck Kaiton, Skip Cunningham and guys like that whove been there a long time. Was it hard playing in front half-packed arenas?I did it for a lot of my career and it was a difficult thing to do. The common cliché that was tossed around the locker room was that we have to make our own excitement tonight because there is not people banging on the glass and being loud and obnoxious and creating momentum out there. I almost got used to it because when I came out to Carolina there was bare crowds for the first three or four years, so its a difficult thing to do, especially when you go to markets like Montreal or Toronto where the building is packed; its frustrating because you dont really get that sense that youre in the NHL. Radim Vrbata had the lone shootout goal for Phoenix, 7-1-1 in its last nine games. Pirri tied the score 4-all 3 minutes into the third, and 4 seconds after a Chicago power play had elapsed. He connected on a midair deflection of Brent Seabrooks drive from the top of the circle. Brandon Saad, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa also scored in regulation for the Blackhawks, who extended their point streak to eight games (7-0-1). Chicago fired a season-high 52 shots through overtime at Coyotes goalie Mike Smith. Phoenix defenceman Michael Stone scored two goals for the first time in his career as the Coyotes overcame an early two-goal deficit to earn a point. Shane Doan and Lauri Korpikoski also scored for Phoenix. At 13-4-3, the Coyotes are off to their best start since 1998-99 when they were 15-3-2 after 20 games. Smith made 48 saves and Chicagos Corey Crawford had 26 in a wide-open, back-and-forth game. The 52 shots allowed by the Coyotes through overtime also were a season high. Smith entered having faced an NHL-high 555 shots. Phoenix defenceman Zbynek Michalek left after five shifts in the first period with a lower-body injury. The Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 6:22, but the Coyotes came back to tie it 2-all after the first period. Saad opened the scoring 2:37 in when he popped in a rebound with Smith down on the ice and a scrum in the crease. Sharp made it 2-0 at 6:22 with a power-play goal, on a rising shot fired from tthe top of the slot and through a screen.dddddddddddd The 23-year-old Stone cut it to 2-1 just 41 seconds later when his shot from the right point deflected off Pirris stick and past Crawford. Doans power-play goal, chipped in from the right side of the net with 5:56 left in the first, tied it at 2. Keith Yandles shot from the point missed the net, caromed off the back boards and straight to Doan. Hossa put Chicago back ahead 3-2 at 5:05 of the second when he drove to the net unchecked and scored on a rebound of his own shot from left wing. Then Korpikoski and Stone scored 2:11 apart late in the second to put Phoenix ahead for the first time, 4-3. From the edge of the crease, Korpikoski wrapped in a rebound of Radim Vrbatas shot with 5:05 left in the period to knot it at 3. Stones second goal, on a high drive from the top of the left circle, sailed past Crawford on the stick side and put the Coyotes in front. After Pirri scored to tie it at 4, the Blackhawks took control and outshot the Coyotes 17-6 in the third. Smith stopped Hossa from point-blank range with a minute left in regulation. Chicago dominated the overtime and outshot Phoenix 3-0 NOTES: The Blackhawks recalled 20-year-old forward Alex Broadhurst from Rockford of the AHL and placed C Michael Handzus on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 25. Handzus has missed the last eight games with an upper-body injury. Broadhurst, from the Chicago suburb of New Lenox, Ill., didnt play Thursday. ... Chicago D Michal Rozsival was a scratch. He was hit in the face with a puck on Sunday. ... Phoenix assigned forward Chris Brown to Portland of the American Hockey League. He had appeared in just four games. ' ' '
Third base is a relatively shallow position, giving the best hot corner options even more relative value. Leaving aside now-first-baseman Miguel Cabrera, the best of the bunch has been Texas Adrian Beltre who, over the past five seasons, sits just behind Tampa Bays Evan Longoria in runs, home runs and RBI, but has a batting average nearly 30 points higher, enough to get the nod, particularly since Beltre has stayed relatively healthy throughout his career. Thats not to say that Longoria isnt great; hes hit 30-plus homers three times and he played 160 games last season, but missed 117 in the previous two years, so that hangs over any decision to take him. The injury bug has caught the Mets David Wright in two of the past three seasons, causing him to miss 50 or more games in 2011 and 2013, but hes also a career .301 hitter who has power and has added at least 15 stolen bases per season in eight of the past nine years. Washingtons Ryan Zimmerman has belted at least 25 homers in four of the past five seasons, and that consistency makes him better than most at the position. While those have the longer track record, there are some that are newer to the hot corner that also have put up big numbers. Oaklands Josh Donaldson had a breakout season in 2013 and Seattles Kyle Seager has back-to-back 20 home run seasons. St. Louis Matt Carpenter, who might have more value at his previous position of second base, but he led the National League with 126 runs scored last year, while hitting .318, and that works at any position. Beyond that, there are more challenges involved. San Diegos Chase Headley followed up a breakthrough 2012 season with a dramatic drop-off in 2013, so take your chances. Pittsburghs Pedro Alvarez led the National League with 36 home runs last season, but also whiffed a league-high 186 times on his way to a .233 batting average, so you pay a price to get that power; probably enough to avoid Alvarez unless hes filling a corner infield spot. In his mid-30s and coming an injury-shortened season, Milwaukees Aramis Ramirez can still mash when healthy -- more than 25 home runs in eight of the past 10 seasons. A couple of rising stars may still be a year or two away from being huge fantasy contributors, but its worth keeping Baltimores Manny Machado, coming back from knee injury, and Colorados Nolan Arenado have potential thats worth investing in at some point. Others with upside include Torontos Brett Lawrie, who is still untapped potential, and San Franciscos Pablo Sandoval has dropped some weight, so might be a bit of a sleeper. Really, beyond the top handful of choices at third base, a lot of the appeal is in the eye of the beholder Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen. Toronto is first in home runs with 67; its second in slugging percentage (.445) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.773) and sixth in walks (168). Jose Bautista was the celebrated hero of April, smacking eight of his 11 home runs, working to a 1.065 OPS in the opening month. In May its been Edwin Encarnacion, the other half of the Blue Jays deadly three-four lineup combination, who has done most of the damage. With 11 of his 13 home runs this month, including four two-home run games and an OPS of 1.090, you could argue Encarnacions been carrying the lineup. Bautista doesnt want to hear it; not about himself and not about someone else. Theres plenty of credit to go around. "I think everybodys been contributing since day one," Bautista told TSN.ca. "Melky, for instance, is leading the league in hits. Adams (Lind) hitting .320. Brett (Lawrie), even though his average is down a little bit, hes got 20-something RBI. Everybodys helping out. Franciscos got seven, eight home runs and 20 RBI as well. Navarros hitting close to .300." While Bautista insists he hasnt been pitched to differently since Encarnacion has heated up, he expects opposing teams to change their approach once they peruse the pre-scout books and video. "Im sure its going to change," said Bautista. "I think people are definitely noticing and now its going to be more on their radar how hot he is so hopefully that means Im going to get a couple of more mistakes over the plate." Taking his word for it, teams may not be pitching differently to Bautista but at least they now are pitching to him. Consider that in April, while Encarnacion laboured through a relatively slow opening month, Bautista walked 30 times in 122 plate appearances (24.6 per cent). In May, through to the end of Thursdays game, Bautista has walked 11 times in 94 trips to the plate (11.7 per cent). Through Thursday, the Blue Jays had won six of seven and 12 of 17. They have a number of individuals at or near the top of a number of categories. They include: Melky Cabrera: 64 hits, the most in Major League BaseballEdwin Encarnacion: 13 home runs (Tied-3rd); 39 RBI (6th). Jose Bautista: 12 home runs (Tied 6th), 41 walks (1st); .435 on-base percentage (5th); .988 on-base plus slugging (5th). Mark Buehrle: Eight wins, the most in Major League Baseball; 2.16 ERA (8th). GIBBONS LIKES HIS OFFENCE The story of Torontos offensive production got lost earlier this season amid the worry over the starting pitching and the bullpen blowing leads. With the Jays winnning, the bats move to the forefront.dddddddddddd The skipper has seen it all year. "We can hit, top to bottom," said manager John Gibbons. "Its a strong American League lineup and thats kind of what you need in the American League. Were really a home run threat with most of those guys in that lineup we can burn you that way. I really like the approach we have at the plate. Were taking some hits the other way when its called for. The better pitchers, thats the way theyre attacking you. Were confident right now. You have good games when youre feeling good. Baseball is a game of ups and downs all year long but its a good strong lineup." HENDRIKS TO START FRIDAY The Blue Jays will recall right-hander Liam Hendriks from Buffalo on Friday and he will start the series opener against Oakland. R.A. Dickey will be pushed back to Saturday when he will throw on an extra days rest. "We just decided to split up Buehrle and Dickey," said Gibbons. "Theyre our old reliable guys, kind of our innings eaters." Hendriks is 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA and a 0.801 WHIP for the Triple-A Bisons. The 25-year-old is hoping for his first period of sustained major league success. In parts of three seasons with the Twins, Hendriks was 2-13 with an ERA of 6.06. A corresponding roster move will be made before Fridays game. HOME COOKING The Jays kick off a season-high 10-game homestand on Friday. After the Athletics come in for three, the Tampa Bay Rays will check in, followed by the Kansas City Royals for a four-game series. Toronto has a bus trip series to Detroit for three games June 2-4 and then will return home for six games, three each with the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins. For the Blue Jays, it isnt so much about capitalizing on home field advantage as it is trying to create a home field advantage. Toronto is 10-11 at Rogers Centre and 16-11 on the road. "We have to play good at home," said Gibbons. "Weve played actually better on the road this year than we have at home. Were there for awhile so hopefully we can take advantage of that." "I never want to have any outlook at any period of the season and start a sentence with We have to or We need to or Its imperative that we do anything," said Bautista. "Every time in baseball when you have that mentality things seem to go the other way. Weve just got to focus on the preparation, go out and give it our all every single day and take it one day at a time and hope for good results and if we get them, we get them." Oakland comes to town the leader of the American League West with a record of 30-17. Despite a 5-2, 11-inning loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday, the Athletics have won 11 of their last 13 games. ' ' '

Mike Aviles went 1 for 2 with a walk and drove in Clevelands run.Tom Brady against ol pal Richard Sherman and the rest of the best defence in the NFL. Russell Wilson against Darrelle Revis, former teammate Brandon Browner and whatever schemes Bill Belichick dreams up. Marshawn Lynch and LeGarrette Blount and their tough-to-tackle running styles. The occasional well-designed — and well-executed — trick play. There is a lot to look forward to when Wilsons Seattle Seahawks, the defending champions, take on Bradys New England Patriots, the dominant franchise of the 2000s, in the Super Bowl at Glendale, Arizona, on Feb. 1. Seattle can become the first team to win consecutive NFL championships since Brady, Belichick and Co. did it a decade ago. In nearly a half-century of Super Bowls — this will be the 49th — theres never been this long a stretch without a repeat champion. On Super Sunday last year, the Seahawks beat Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 43-8. After Seattle (14-4) and New England (14-4) won their conference title games at home Sunday, some Las Vegas sports books had the Seahawks — heading to the franchises third Super Bowl — as 1-point favourites, while others made the game a pick em. New England reached its eighth Super Bowl, equaling the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers for most in league history. Its the sixth time in the past 14 years the Patriots have made it this far; they won trophies after the 2001, 2003 and 2004 seasons. But they lost in their past two Super Bowl appearances, after the 2007 and 2011 seasons, both times against Eli Manning and the New York Giants. Its hard to compare, year to year. I think every situations different, the 37-year-old Brady said. Weve had a lot of good teams in the past. This one is going to have to win a very important game to kind of leave our legacy. Here are some things to know about the Super Bowl: YOU MAD BRO?: The last time these two teams met was in October 2012, when Wilson was a rookie who threw for the go-ahead touchdown with less than 90 seconds left, Sherman was not yet as highly regarded for his cornerback play — or as widely known for his confidence — but intercepted Brady, and Seattle won 24-23. That game was best known for what happened afterward: Shermans taunting tweet aimed at Brady.dddddddddddd Something else to think about: Will Shermans injured left elbow be OK in two weeks? SLOW STARTS, FAST FINISHES: Neither of these teams looked all that good early in the season. The Seahawks started 3-3, making preseason talk of a dynasty seem silly; the Patriots began 2-2, and folks were saying Brady was washed up after a 41-14 loss at Kansas City on Sept. 29. So much for any of that. Seattle is now on an eight-game winning streak, including Sundays stirring 28-22 overtime victory over Green Bay for the NFC championship after trailing 16-0. New England, meanwhile, won 10 of 11 games until dropping its meaningless regular-season finale. You dont want to judge your team after three or four games into the season, Brady said after beating Indianapolis 45-7 for the AFC title, and its important not to ride the roller coaster. THE QBS: Will Brady win his fourth Lombardi Trophy? Will Wilson win his second? Brady owns all sorts of post-season QB records, including 49 touchdown passes and six trips to the Super Bowl. Wilson, meanwhile, is 10-0 for his career in games against quarterbacks who own at least one ring — but only because he overcame four interceptions and a halftime quarterback rating of zero to rally Seattle in the closing minutes against Aaron Rodgers on Sunday. I just continue to believe in our guys, said Wilson, who wept after beating Green Bay. THE COACHES: New Englands Belichick owns a record 21 post-season wins. Seattles Pete Carroll preceded Belichick as New Englands coach, then was a national title-winning college coach at Southern California, before returning to the pros. Both come from defensive backgrounds. Neither is afraid to call a trick play. Punter Jon Ryans touchdown pass on a fake field goal for Seattles first points Sunday. One of Bradys three TD tosses against the Colts went to left tackle Nate Solder. A week earlier, receiver Julian Edelman threw a 51-yard pass. LYNCHS SILENT TREATMENT: Lynch, who ran for 157 yards against the Packers, has been docked $100,000 by the NFL for violating the leagues media policy, making a habit of either ignoring reporters entirely or offering one-word answers. Will he show at the annual circus that is Super Bowl media day? ' ' '
