WASHINGTON -- The first half ended with a case of the Marquee Miscues. Kevin Durant lost the ball to John Wall, and Wall then missed an open fast-break layup at the horn. It was Durants fourth turnover and Walls seventh miss in a row. At halftime, Wall changed his shoes. Maybe that was the difference. The newly minted first-time All-Star guard scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, and the Washington Wizards took advantage of a rare off-night from Durant and snapped the Oklahoma Thunders 10-game winning streak Saturday with a 96-81 win. "I didnt like how I played on the road trip in my white shoes, so I tried the red ones," Wall said. "They didnt work in the first half, so I got rid of them and went back to my old white ones, and they kind of helped me out. Im kind of superstitious." Wall also had 15 assists and six steals and went 7 for 11 from the field after halftime, more than making up for the 0-for-7 first half. Marcin Gortat had 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Trevor Ariza added 18 points and did a solid job defending Durant, whose 26 points came on 8-for-21 shooting, including 0 for 6 from 3-point range, and enough calls to make him 10 for 10 from the free-throw line. He also committed five turnovers. "Just stay in his grille, man," Ariza said. "Just try to make him take tough shots. Try not to give him no easy, easy looks." Durant had a streak of 12 consecutive 30-point games end during a 25-point win over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Sitting at his locker before Saturdays game, his legs hooked up to compression tubes for a high-tech massage, he talked about the 100 or so tickets he had to secure for family and friends in D.C. Whether it was hometown jitters -- or fatigue from the night before -- or the unfamiliarity of the new balls with Adam Silvers signature on the first day of work for the new NBA commissioner -- or the solid defence of Ariza -- the citys native son had a rough night fighting the Wizards defence. "They made me see a crowd," Durant said. "There were a few shots that I should have it hit. I had some good looks, but they did a good job." The Thunders only lead was 2-0. They committed 10 of their 21 turnoovers in the first quarter.dddddddddddd "We were just a step slow in everything," Durant said. "We didnt start up with enough energy and intensity and that falls back on me as a leader." The victory moved the Wizards to .500 for the seventh time this season, which means they get yet another chance to overcome an obstacle that has flummoxed them in recent weeks. A win Monday against Portland would give Washington a winning record for the first time since October 2009. "Thats cool for yall. I dont know if its cool for us," said guard Garrett Temple, when the subject that has become increasingly taboo in the locker room was broached by reporters. "But weve got to not even worry about that. Weve got a tough team coming here on Monday night." The Thunder had averaged 110.2 points during the winning streak, but they matched their season-low in points in a game against the Wizards. They did have a chance to tie the score in the second half when Derek Fisher was fouled while making a 3-pointer, but he missed the free throw that would have evened the game at 58. From there, Wall and the Wizards pulled away. A Durant turnover became a Wall dunk. Walls floater gave Washington a 78-64 lead after three quarters. The Thunder didnt challenge the rest of the way, failing to get within single digits in the fourth. "Twenty-one turnovers, 10 in the first quarter. Thats basically six minutes of basketball, giving them the ball back without ever trying to score," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "It wasnt good enough -- bottom line." NOTES: Temple went 3 for 4 with the new balls. "My shot felt real good. Even with those now Adam Silver balls," he said. "It was slippery at first, but we got into a rhythm." ... The Thunder had won nine straight road games against Eastern Conference teams, while the Wizards had dropped five in a row at home vs. the West. ... Durants hefty ticket purchase gave him a convenient excuse to laugh off the notion that he would think about playing for the Wizards someday. "I spent a lot of money on tickets today -- imagine if I played here," Durant said. "I dont even want to think about that." ' ' '

Cedar Falls, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - The longest winning streak in FCS history ended in much the same way it was built by North Dakota State. Through dominating defense and a team pulling away in the second half. It was just odd to see another team have the winning formula, but on Saturday 19th-ranked Northern Iowa did as they handled the top-ranked Bison, 23-3, to stop their 33-game winning streak before 14,777 inside the UNI-Dome. North Dakota State (9-1, 5-1 Missouri Valley) had not lost since falling to Indiana State, 17-14, on Oct. 13, 2012. UNI (6-4, 4-2) also ended the Bisons record Missouri Valley winning streak at 18 games and handed them their first loss away from home since the 2010 FCS playoffs (a span of 22 straight wins). UNI outgained North Dakota State 306 yards to 175, scored 10 points off turnovers, and held the Bison to eight first downs and only an Adam Keller field goal late in the second quarter. Running back David Johnson rushed for 133 yards and had 210 all-purpose yards, quarterback Brion Carnes and running back Darrian Miller both rushed for touchdowns, and Michael Schmadeke was 3-for-3 on field goals. The Bison were still in striking range before Schmadekes 36-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter extended UNIs lead to 13-3. He kicked a 42-yarder at the 9:25 mark to make it 16-3. Then after a three-and-out series by the Bison, Miller broke off a 30-yard TD run to put the win away. North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz was held to 132 passing yards with an interception and three-time 1,000-yard running back John Crockett struggled to 41 yards on 17 carries. UNI now has three wins over No. 1-ranked opponents. The Panthers also beat No. 1 New Hampshire, 24-21, in 2005 and No. 1 Youngstown State, 35-32, in 1997. The loss also was the first for first-year Bison coach Chris Klieman. His team fell into a first-place tie with Illinois State (8-1, 5-1), one game ahead of both UNI and Youngstown State (7-3, 4-2), with two weeks remaining in the Missouri Valley season. One of the hottest scorers in the NHL prior to the Olympic break, Kessel has been Team USAs most dynamic player through the preliminary round scoring four goals and seven points in three games to help his team remain undefeated. Kessel scored three goals and was the first star of the game as the United States registered an easy 5-1 win over Slovenia Sunday. The Toronto Maple Leafs right-winger shot Team USA into a quick 2-0 lead scoring on his teams first shot of the game and then batting a puck out of mid-air a few minutes later. Kessel completed his hat trick at 11:05 of the second period when he popped a rebound past Slovenian goaltender Luka Gracnar. "Im just trying to help my team win; do whatever I can," Kessel said. He added it is a bonus to be playing on a line with James van Riemsdyk, his linemate in Toronto. Joe Pavelski of the San Jose Sharks in the lines centre. "It helps a lot that I play with JVR all year," Kessel said. "I played with Pav at the last Olympics and were just trying to keep going." Slovenia, coming off a thrilling 3-1 victory over Slovakia Saturday, had nothing left in the tank to face the United States. It was as though its win over Slovakia was its Stanley Cup victory and the team checked out mentally. Likewise, the Americans celebrated a monumental shootout win over the host Russians knowing thhey could go at half speed and not lose on this day.dddddddddddd A goal in the final minute by Slovenia was inconsequential other than the fact it affected Team USAs goal differential. The Americans complete the round robin with a 3-0 record having outscored their opponents 15-4. The game had all the intensity of two last-place teams in a beer league hooking up late in the season. The Slovenians had a couple of decent scoring chances, but that said, they were never really in the game. The United States took the lead and then coasted to the victory. With 13 goals since Jan. 2, Pavelski has been one of the hottest scorers in the NHL in 2014. He has continued to hold a hot hand in the Olympics scoring a goal and adding three assists through three games. Ryan Miller was the hero of the 2010 Olympic Games for Team USA, leading his team to the gold medal game and earning most valuable player honors. He had a 5-1 record in Vancouver, but has been designated as the teams backup goalie in this years tournament, giving way to Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings. Miller made his first start against Slovenia. Forward Derek Stepan of the New York Rangers also saw his first action replacing Max Pacioretty in the lineup. Slovenias best player, Anze Kopitar, was late joining his team for the second period and then skipped the third period all together. No reason was given for his absence. ' ' '

Watt had just sprinted 80 yards on an interception return for a touchdown to give the Texans the lead on Sunday against Buffalo, and it was time to play defence again.Coaches offered to give the 289-pound defensive end a minute to catch his breath, but he waved them off dismissively. No way was Houstons star missing even one play.I love to be out there, Watt said. I dont like to give plays up. I dont like to be on the sidelines for any of them if I can go.Watts highlight-reel play helped the Texans overcome a tough day offensively for a 23-17 win over the Bills.Houston (3-1) was down by three in the third quarter when Watt put his hands up to block an EJ Manuel pass, tipped it to himself and caught it with no Bills in front of him. Kareem Jackson blocked Manuel, and Watt raced to the end zone to put the Texans up 14-10.Watt caught a touchdown pass in Week 2, giving him more TDs this year than Arian Foster and Andre Johnson combined. He made a play, and a key of ours was to make sure he wasnt going to make that big disruptive play prior to the game, and he did, and he made a lot of plays, Bills coach Doug Marrone said of Watt.Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick had a tough day against his former team, throwing for 268 yards with two interceptions. He put together one nice drive capped by a 35-yard touchdown reception by DeAndre Hopkins that cut the lead to 10-7 just before halftime.Under heavy pressure all afternoon, Manuel finished with 225 yards passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. It didnt matter much, though, as Watts interception came three plays later.Watt added a bit of swagger when he high-stepped and waved one hand in the air as he crossed the goal line, igniting the home crowd. He said he had no clue what he did, but added that it may have been half Deion Sanders high-step and half a dance called the Nae Nae. He cringed when he saw it unfolding in real time on the Jumbotron.I was like: Youre a white defensive lineman, just run the ball in, Watt joked. He said his goal was to be underpaid when he signed a six-year, $100 million contract earlier this month, and so far he hasnt disappointed.Hes worth every cent, owner Bob McNair said. I hope he doesnt come in tomorrow and ask for a raise.Hes the second player since the merger in 1970 to have an interception return for a touchdown and a touchdown catch in the same season. Houston assistant coach Mike Vrabel did it in 2005 for New England.Watt finished with five tackles and had a career-high nine hits on Manuel.Hopkins TD pass capped the first drive where the Texans mustered any offence, and they had negative yards rushing until late in the second quarter. They also had some problems on defence, with Watt committing two roughing-the-passer penalties in the first quarter.NOTES: Foster played after missing last week with a hamstring injury and said he wasnt 100 per cent healthy. Kevin Martin, a Canadian curling star whose career highlights include an Olympic gold medal and a world championship, will soon throw his last rock. The Edmonton skip announced his retirement Friday at the Grand Slam of Curlings Players Championship in Summerside, P.E.I. Martin plans to finish the event before becoming a spokesman for the series. The decision to retire came after the Canadian Olympic curling trials in December when Martins rink failed to book a ticket to the Sochi Games. Martin had make an official announcement when the season was over, but that changed when news surfaced last month that second Marc Kennedy and lead Ben Hebert were joining national champion Kevin Koes rink. But retirement has been on the 47-year-olds mind since winning gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games. "I guess when it comes to sports you kind of know when its time," said Martin. "I thought about retiring after Vancouver and we ended up deciding to play and try to get to Sochi and trained extremely hard in the last year and came close. But (Brad) Jacobs ended up winning, which is great, but that was it. "Im not trying for another four-year term. Right after the trials, thats when I told the team and I phoned my sponsors. Everyone knew, I just didnt want to announce anything at the time. Thats not really proper." The affable Martin, nicknamed "The Bear," has been a powerhouse in Canadian curling since making his junior debut in 1984. He won a Canadian junior curling championship with Alberta in 1985 and never looked back. He leaves the sport with a glittering resume that includes a world championship in 2008, a silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games and four gold medals at the Brier. He also holds the record for Grand Slam titles with 17, including seven Players Championships. Martins departure from the sport wont coincide with a drop in results. He said it was important to end his career at a high point. "Absolutely. Its really important to me that I wasnt one of those guys that, you know, youre sliding down the hill there. I just dont want to be that guy," he said. "You know the trials, I felt so good after the trials. Its about the best Ive ever played I think. About a 93 per cent average for the week. "So I was really good. So I was happy, not happy to not win, but that it was a good strong effort because Im certainly not waiting around four more years for sure." Martin conceded his career highlight was his perfect run to gold in Vancouver. But a 20-year-old memory also stood out for Martin, who recalled rallying to beat Ed Werenich in the 1994 Players Championship. He remembers the losses, too. Losing out in the 2002 Olympic final stung, but Martin considers the bronze-medal match against the United States at the 1992 Albertville Games as his biggest defeat. "I dont really think we should have lost that game," he said. "And now of course, all these years later, which is many years, and I think to myself, geez, win that game and I would have had won one of each -- a gold, a silver and a bronze. Theres not many people who have that." Martin, who began playing at age seven, also has the benefit of being able to reflect on a sport that has evolved significantly during his career. Television time and corporate sponsorship have increased, ice conditions have improved, the international game is far more competitive and the players, according to Martin, look more like athletes. "The conditions have changed dramatically, and therefore the training and the precision of the athlete is completely changed as well. Its just not the same," he said. "Its so much better now because the precisions there. The athletes are in phenomenal shape." The demands of the ice are almost over for Martin. Hes looking forward to the broadcast booth, representing the sport and taking a break from practising two or three hours every day. Getting to spend more time with his three children will also be a welcome change. "It was pretty interesting for them today, because with the announcement coming tonight they dont usually phone and talk to me during curling events of course. It was a pretty big day for the Martin family, for sure." Shoes NZ Online . MADRID, Spain -- Lionel Messi marked his return from a near two-month injury absence by coming off the bench to score two late goals as Barcelona beat Getafe 4-0 in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday. While Cesc Fabregas also scored twice, the atmosphere at the far-from-capacity Camp Nou only picked up with Messis entrance as a substitute in the 64th minute. The Argentina forward showed no after-effects from a torn left hamstring. "I felt good in training and even if they checked me thoroughly, once you get on the field its totally different," Messi said. "Physically I felt good, I didnt feel any discomfort in my muscle." "I played through injury," Messi said of the buildup to his 59-day absence, when he was bothered by various problems. "But I did well to get through all of this. And now Im motivated to make this a great year." Messi slotted home Martin Montoyas lay-off inside the area on the stroke of stoppage time before capping a typical run through the opponents defence with a rising shot into the back of the net moments later. "Messis career is like a movie script," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. "When you think hes down, he scores goals within just two or three minutes. His game was like a summary of his entire career here." Pedro Rodriguez found Fabregas inside the area with a well-placed cross to head home the ninth-minute opener, and Fabregas later doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in front of 39,299 fans at the 100,000-capacity stadium. Barcelona was without forward Neymar because of a stomach bug. The game was watched by the teams former coach Tito Vilanova, who showed the effects of his cancer treatment. In other last 16, first-leg matches, last-place Real Betis set aside its Spanish league woes to beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 at home, while second-division side Alcorcon also started with a 1-0 home victory against Espanyol. Racing Santander drew 1-1 against Almeria in a tension-filled matchup marked by player protests and the directors box being stormed by spectators. Santander has quickly slid down the professional ranks into the third division since its relegation from topflight football two seasons ago. Tension was high among the 1,500 fans in the El Sardinero from the kickoff when players stood idly for 20 seconds in protest at not being paid their wages for three months. A group of spectators also attempted to confront club president Alfonso Garcia and the directors in their seats, and clashes with police followed. At the Benito Villamarin Stadium, Betis forward Ruben Castro headed home Juanfran Morenos long cross at the far post in the 42nd minute for the winner. Cedric Mabwati and Joan Verdu came close as Betis controlled the first half before Athletic improved. Kike Sola marked his return from injury with the visitors best chances, hitting a post just before stoppage time. This was a game they had to have. Paul George and David West made sure they got it. George and West hit key 3-pointers down the closing minutes, and top-seeded Indiana held off the Atlanta Hawks 91-88 to even the opening-round series at two wins apiece Saturday. Finally, the Pacers showed some grit and resilience, regaining the home-court edge that slipped away when they were stunned by the No. 8-seeded Hawks in Game 1. "We were just in desperation mode," West said. "You just cant go down two games in a playoff series. The odds are against you." George put the Pacers ahead 86-85 with a jumper beyond the arc, and West hit another trey with 1:33 remaining. Atlanta had a chance after Kyle Korver was fouled in the corner and knocked down three free throws, taking advantage of a do-over after the Pacers were called for a lane violation. But George gave the Pacers two chances at the other hand, scrambling for an offensive rebound after Lance Stephenson missed a 3. George Hill took advantage by scooping one in off a drive with 56 seconds left. That would be the final points. The Hawks whiffed on their last three possessions; Pero Antic missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime after the Pacers made sure Korver, the long-range specialist, didnt get his hands on the ball. Game 5 is Monday in Indianapolis. After questioning his teams toughness, George scored 24 points and added 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. West added 18 points. "My number was called," George said. "I had to deliver." Unfortunately for the Hawks, Paul Millsap couldnt provide the matching punch. Even though he led the Hawks with 29 points, the All-Star forward turned it over with a bad pass with 33 seconds to go. Then, after Stephenson lost the ball and the Hawks gained possession off a jump, Millsap missed a spinning shot in the lane as Atlanta passed on going for a tying 3-pointer. "Were still a confident group," Millsap said. "We let one slip away, but we showed we can go out and compete in the games up there. Thats where our mindset is now. Weve got to let this one go and get ready for Monday." Indiana left the door open by missing its final four free throws, including a pair byy George with 7.dddddddddddd5 seconds left when only one would have been enough to seal the victory. But the Pacers buckled down at the defensive end, forcing Antic to throw up a desperation shot that clanked off the rim. The Pacers decided against benching Roy Hibbert to go with a smaller lineup against the Hawks, who have taken the 7-foot-2 centre out of his comfort zone by spreading the court with their big men. Hibbert continued to struggle, managing just six points and three rebounds in a little less than 25 minutes. But he did have his first two blocks of the series. George and West took care of the rest. Cheered on by a raucous crowd at Philips Arena, where they even took down a curtain that normally covers part of the upper deck, the Hawks looked as though they were headed for a commanding lead in the series as they pushed out to their biggest lead, 54-44, early in the third quarter. But Millsap picked up two fouls just 7 seconds apart, giving him four in the game and forcing him to the bench for much of the period. The Pacers took advantage of the Atlanta stars absence, whittling the deficit down to 59-56 by the time he returned. "Getting him on his heels, putting him in a tough spot, obviously it changes who they are," West said. "The game was getting away from us. He goes to the bench, we closed the gap somewhat." It was tight all the way in the fourth, and things really got heated down the stretch. With about 5 1/2 minutes remaining, Millsap stumbled trying to drive to the basket and two Pacers piled on him trying to snatch the ball away. Tempers flared, Hill gave Atlantas Mike Scott a little shove, and both players were assessed technical fouls. After sorting things out, the officials ruled it a jump ball. MIAMI -- For the entirety of the regular season, the supremacy of the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference was brought into serious question by the Indiana Pacers. Then came the playoffs. And the question was answered -- emphatically. The Heat became the third franchise in NBA history to reach the title series in four consecutive seasons, a laugher of a conference-title finale getting them there again Friday night. LeBron James and Chris Bosh each scored 25 points, and Miami eliminated the Pacers for the third straight year with a 117-92 romp in Game 6 of the East championship series. "Im blessed. Very blessed. Very humbled," James said. "And we wont take this opportunity for granted. Its an unbelievable franchise, its an unbelievable group. And we know we still have work to do, but we wont take this for granted. Were going to four straight Finals and we will never take this for granted." Dwyane Wade and Rashard Lewis each scored 13 points for Miami, which trailed 9-2 before ripping off 54 of the next 75 points to erase any doubt by halftime. The Heat set a franchise record with their 11th straight home post-season win, going back to the final two games of last seasons NBA Finals, leading by 37 at one point. "The group loves to compete and loves to compete at the highest level, and be pushed to new levels," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Indiana led the East for much of the regular season, one where the Pacers were fueled by the memory of losing Game 7 of the East finals in Miami a year ago. So they spent this season with a clear goal: Toppling Miami as kings of the East. The Pacers were two games better in the regular season. They were two games worse in the post-season. Game 7, this time, would have been in Indianapolis. The Pacers just had no shot of making it happen, not on this night. "Its bitterly disappointing to fall short of our goals," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "Its bitterly disappointing to lose to this team three years in a row. But were competing against the Michael Jordan of our era, the Chicago Bulls of our era, and you have to tip your hats to them for the way they played this whole series." Paul George had 29 points for Indiana, David West scored 16 and Lance Stephenson -- booed all night -- finished with 11. "No regrets. All of us played hard. They were just the better team, and they won," Stephenson said. So now, the Celtics and Lakers have some company. Until Friday, they were the only teams in NBA history to reach the Finals in four straight years. The Heat have joined them, and their quest for a third straight title starts in either San Antonio or Oklahoma City on Thursday night. "Its all about 15 special men and what theyve been able to accomplish these last four years," said Heat managing general partner Micky Arison, who handed the East title trophy to Greg Oden. "Just a little bit more work to do, but Im really proud of the incredible job that these guys have done." The way they played in Game 6 made a prophet out of Bosh, who predicted Miami would play its best game of the season. The numbers suggested he was right, and then some. Miamis largest lead at any point this season, before Game 6, was 36 points. Indianas largest deficit of the season had been 35 points. After a layup by James with 3:39 left in the third, the margin in this one was a whopping 37 -- 86-49. James night ended not long afterward. "It was just one of those games that we want to play from beginning to end," Bosh said. "Here on our home court, we wanted to make a statement." There were the now-requisite Stephenson events, adding intrigue to the first half. The Indiana guard walked over to James and tapped him in the face in the opening minutes, stood over him after both got tangled under the basket, and got whistled for a flagrant foul for striking Norris Cole in the head in the second quarter. It was the end of a memorable series for Stephenson, none of which really had anything to do with basketball. His string of newsworthy moments from these East finals started when he talked about the health of Wades knees before the series and reached an apex in Game 5 when he blew into James ear and walked into a Heat huddle. When it was over, Stephenson went out and shook hands with plenty of Heat players, as did the rest of his teammates. "To work so hard and to get to where we are now really hurts," Stephenson said. The Heat were bothered by it all -- "angry," Spoelstra confessed -- but got the last laugh. Big Brother, again, reigned supreme in this rivalry. Vogel was using the big brother-little brother analogy earlier in the series, telling the tale of how at some point in every sibling rivalry the younger one has to make a stand. Indiana thought it would happen now. The Heat, obviously, had other ideas. "Theyve won championships," West said Friday when asked if the Pacers considered themselves Miamis equal. "No, were not equal." West said those words about eight hours before game time. They were in no dispute at nights end. NOTES: James appeared in what became his 100th playoff victory. ... The Pacers are now 7-12 against Miami in the last three postseasons, and 20-10 against everybody else. ... Wade and Udonis Haslem are going to the NBA Finals for the fifth time in nine seasons -- with a 15-67 season on their record during that stretch as well. ... Chris Andersen returned from a thigh injury, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 13 minutes for Miami. Miles Bridges Hornets Jersey . Shortly after the name Fellaini and the number 31 were ironed on to the back of one of footballs most iconic club shirts late Monday night, a record breaking transfer window slammed shut - then in less time than it takes to sign a cheque for €100m, much of world football immediately turned its attention to crucial world cup qualifiers. Sadly not here though, But when the nation awoke Tuesday morning little did we know then what a most eventful post Labour Day week in soccer lay in store for this most glorious land we are all privileged to call home. Rather ominously it began with yet more revelations the global match fixing industry had uprooted itself from its Malaysian base for a profitable summer visit to southern Ontario. World renowned match fixing super sleuth Declan Hill, who himself hails from that very same Canadian province, would have taken no pleasure in uttering the words he did on the radio Tuesday afternoon. Like all successful criminals, the global money printing syndicates had identified a marshmallow soft target. For all the good it has done for football development in the region, the CSL has reportedly become a favoured destination for these criminal tourists. What makes this all the more remarkable is that this is happening, almost encouraged to occur, right under the noses of one of the globes most recognized law enforcement agencies. Hill wasnt finished, He signed off his blog posting with the promise of yet more revelations to come. In the interim, its well past time for the RCMP to get off its high horses and intervene whilst getting the full cooperation of all the relevant Canadian soccer authorities. Meanwhile in a Toronto suburb, Toronto FCs Kevin Payne went to bed Tuesday night in the knowledge his brief time in the city of Canadas original MLS franchise had come to an all too familiar, highly embarrassing end. The well-oiled revolving Princess Gate door has become Canadian soccers version of Buckingham Palaces annual changing of the guard. Part of MLSs original fabric, Payne spent way too much of his time explaining himself. Banging on about the difficulties and challenges, than actually finding the required solutions. Let alone set about signing the required winning talent Toronto FCs fantastic fan base surely deserve. If the sophomore Impact have been able to sign the likes of Alessandro Nesta, Marco Di Vaio and Matteo Ferrari as Payne wiled away his final DC days. Then under his TFC watch, sign players of the Hernan Bernarello and Adran Lopez calibre and pedigree - why cant an individual Don Garber describes as one of MLSs most legendry executives do the same? Bluntly put and as I stated when Payne was appointed as TFC Governor General last November, the leagues global reach has moved well on and firmly away from its original structures. Ones that Payne so effortlessly exploited early on in his almost two decade spell at DC United. Far easier to scout and sign the best the US soccer college system produces than it is to swim with the sharks and pariahs of world football, hey Kevin? The print hadnt even dried on the Toronto FC official statement announcing KPs demise, when the world famous bait-and-switch PR card was played by MLSE. The conversation immediately reverting to the possibility of a TFC and Argos time share. On hearing this, my mind immediately shifted to a previous life, and another senior soccer executive who goes by the KP moniker. Stand up Kevin Pipe. CSA Chief Operation Officer who in an act of sheer desperation back in 2005 offered the Toronto Argonauts everything but the actual goal nets which were required to build a soccer stadium, as ways to ensure Toronto became the capital city of FIFA Under-20 World Cup Canada 2007. We all know now of course how that turned out. I wont easily forget that now legendry November 2005 afternoon at Toronto City Hall as I listened in on-line to a rather heated debate as approvals were given for the construction of the so called national soccer stadium on city owned land at Exhibition Place. A gift horse MLSE welcomed with open arms. Meanwhile outside of Toronto, many of the most influential stakeholders of Canadian soccer were left furious with the outcome as $20 million or so of federally donated tax dollars were fully placed in the bank account marked; Stadium Construction. Pipe rightfully lost his job, Toronto got its soccer stadium where a few months on from completion a very certain future son-in-law of Diego Maradona, Sergio Kun Agüero scored one of the goals in the Under-20 final as Argentina reigned supreme down by the lake Ontario water in summer 07. This week we got a very rude reminder, part of Pipes tainted legacy has ensured it will be MLSE and not the CSA who decides if a ground share is a viable option at what is supposed to be the national soccer stadium. The mere fact it is the Argos who toyed and ultimately let down our national body back in the mid 2000s makes the possibility for a TFC and Argos marriage for me all that more difficult to fathom. Mercifully the emotional roller coaster work week for Canadian soccer ended on a highly memorable, vastly more enjoyable note. The most famous Geordie in womens world football committing himself to the WNT cause all the way to 2020 as a very visionary CSA saw off any advances for Herdman - for a soon to be celebrating 150th birthday celebrating English FA. All this coming against a backdrop of the MNT Floro era getting under way this week in Valencia, Spain. Put that in your Pipe and smoke it. Hard to imagine a venue, which played host to one of the Montreal Impacts most memorable matches in their history when over 55,000 packed in for the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals in February 2009, would play spoiler for todays home opener. There goes my thinking as a parent that snow days only occurred at school. Not in a domed building. This for a stadium which has such a tarnished history it makes the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar appear like a rational decision. Increment weather may have played its part but the real issue here though is with the building itself. Todays postponement has certainly taken the gloss on what has been a very successful couple of months for the Impact off the pitch. Earlier this week the club announced a number of supplier partnerships which are expected to dramatically improve the in-stadium experience. This follows up from a number of announcements and events which have occurred throughout the off season. The Klopas announcement in mid-December could not have been better timed, as later that evening the Impact staged their inaugural Members General Assembly. Staged at the very same downtown hotel the Sounders will spend an extra night in this weekend, the event drew a highly passionate crowd of in excess of 500 season ticket holders who interacted with the Impacts brain trust. A Members Council comprising of 15 fans was introduced, it is they who will represent the supporters and stage regular meetings with club officials. The first of those meetings took place in the Impacts locker room at Saputo Stadium last month. How relieved David Moyes must be that Manchester United dont hold similar events. The bond between fan and club was further strengthened just before the season got underway when the Impact launched their new home shirt at a downtown venue which played host to Adele last time the Grammy winner played in town. There arent many supporters clubs in all of MLS as old as Montreals UM02, who ironically trace their roots back to the time the Toronto Lynx bought a boisterous number to Montreal for an A-League game back in 2002. The Montreal Impact could not have paid UM02 a greater compliment than by incorporating their moto "Toujours Fidèles" inside the collar of the new home shirt. The relationship between UM02 and the Impact has come a long way since the time of a walk out protest the night the Impact unveiled their MLS logo at an NASL match back in August 2011. It cant be overstated the role UM02 and the other supporters clubs, which have sprung up since MLS came to Montreal in 2012, play in bringing new fans through the gates. The appetite for MLS has grown over the past two seasons, as has a much more genuine soccer atmosphere on match days. Dont be surprised if their ranks are swelled Sunday afternoon with a cameo appearance by Montreal Mayor, Denis Coderre - likely wearing the Impact shirt that was given to him when the Mayor met with Joey Saputo at City Hall early in the new year. When the club began their 2014 season ticket push last July an area of weakness in need of much improvement was with the Montreal business community. That matter seems to have been addressed in the off season. Try finding yourself a Saputo Stadium corporate box for the season. Increased chats about the Impact around the office water cooler can be nothing but a good thing. With the confirmation late this afternoon the game will go ahead Sunday afternoon, the Impact will need to build on what was an impressive display in Houston. Play those 90 minutes again and there is no way Houston would emerge with a 1-0 victory. Undeserved as the defeat was these though are the games that come the end of the season can be the difference maker when the playoff positions are handed out. Bruin got the fortunate deflection, Wenger the bobble of the ball when clean through on goal. A bounce here, a bounce there, the margin between defeat and victory can be cruel. The key now is how the team react to that set back. Playing against a team which suffered a home defeat last time out and one which is supposed to be amongst the Western Conference pace setters adds to the task. Of no consequence is the absence of USMNT star Clint Dempsey. The Impacts defence which looked shaky through the pre-season and during the opener in Dallas need to be focused, organized and disciplined throughout the 90. The early season form of rookie right back Eric Miller has been most impressive. He plays with the confidence of an MLS veteran and has certainly seized his opportunities. Continuing to play as he has, then the number two position is his to lose. With a fine display through a little over 70 minutes on the pitch in Houston its hard to imagine that Bernier underwent serious knee surgery in the off season. Just as Di Vaios goals did through 2013, Berniers relationship and understanding with Bernadello will go a long way to define the Impacts season. The Impact will be hoping the Olympic Stadium turf does not have any adverse effects on their 30-something skipper. The MLS All Star is the heartbeat of the club, on and off the pitch. The investigation ended April 11 with charges filed against only a tanning salon employee, who was arrested after police said his DNA was found on a car the documents were stolen out of. However, the police report said Major League Baseball was given repeated warnings that the records they sought had been stolen and that they were not to purchase them. Still, they did so anyway, the report said. Baseball officials have denied knowingly buying stolen records. Newsday first reported the results of the probe (http://nwsdy.li/1mO17MU). The documents were stolen from Porter Fischers car. He took them from Biogenesis, the Miami clinic where he worked. The clinic and its owner, Tony Bosch, reportedly provided drugs to Rodriguez and other major league players. The Biogenesis scandal led to 14 suspensions last summer. Rodriguez, a three-time MVP, was suspended for the entire 2014 season. He filed two lawsuits against MLB over its investigation but later withdrew them. He has denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Fischer told a Boca Raton police detective that MLB investigators aggressively pursued him for Biogenesis evidence.dddddddddddd An MLB attorney offered him $125,000 for the records, according to the police report. Fischer declined, saying "it was not enough to start a new life." However, MLB investigators found another South Florida source willing to sell them the records. Gary L. Jones sold MLB a batch of documents on four USB flash drives in exchange for $100,000, according to the police report. Jones told a Boca Raton detective that MLB knew the documents were stolen. Boca Raton Police Department spokeswoman Sandra Boonenberg said an investigator "warned MLB not to purchase the documents" before they were bought. Boonenberg confirmed that information Sunday to The Associated Press. Baseball officials said they did not knowingly buy stolen Biogenesis records. "We have stated repeatedly that we had no knowledge that the documents we purchased were stolen," MLB senior vice-president of public relations Pat Courtney told Newsday. Fischer, meanwhile, had agreed to help the Florida Department of Health build a case against Bosch. He was on his way to deliver the documents to a health department investigator when Jones urged him to stop at a Boca Raton tanning salon to try a new spray. When he came out of the salon, his car had been broken into and the records were gone. ' ' '

MANAUS, Brazil -- Xherdan Shaqiris hat trick put Switzerland into the second round of the World Cup, and kept coach Ottmar Hitzfeld gainfully employed for at least a few more days. Shaqiri scored a pair of first-half goals and added another in the second Wednesday to give Switzerland a 3-0 victory over Honduras, a result that put the Swiss in second place in Group E behind France. "We knew that we were going to show great football today," said Shaqiri, a Bayern Munich winger. "For us, this has been really a dream to be in the World Cup, small Switzerland in the World Cup." The small Swiss will next face the not-so-small Lionel Messi and Argentina on Tuesday in Sao Paulo in what could be Hitzfelds final match. The German veteran, a two-time Champions League winner as a coach, has said this tournament will be his last. "We are really anxious for that. We also know that we are not the favourites for the match, but we are going to try for victory," Shaqiri said. "Getting to the round of 16, everything is possible. You never know." Shaqiri scored his first goal in the sixth minute, dribbling into a crowd of defenders and curling a shot into the net off the underside of the crossbar. In the 31st, he collected a pass from Josip Drmic after a defensive error and easily beat Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares. Shaqiri completed his hat trick in the 71st. Drmic did well to beat Honduras defender Victor Bernardez on the left and pass to a charging Shaqiri, who one-timed his shot past a diving Valladares. In the other Group E game, France held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw. The match at the Arena da Amazonia was the fourth and final game to be played in the Brazilian rainforest, and was the second to have an official cooling break because of the stifling heat and humidity. According to FIFA, it was 26 degrees C (79 degrees F) with the humidity at 88 per cent when the match started. Referee Nestor Pitana of Argentina made the decision to stop the match in the 39th, and the break lasted for about a minute. There was also an official break in the first half of the United States-Portugal match on Sunday. After three 6 p.m. starts at the Arena da Amazonia, Wednesdays match started at 4 p.m. But a noontime thunderstorm combined with overcast skies and a slight breeze cooled the temperature a bit after several days of sunny skies and oppressive heat. "Toward the end things were getting tougher, but we managed to deal with this," Hitzfeld said. "We ran for the ball." The extreme weather had been something Honduras was looking forward to. The Central American country has a similar climate, and they often play qualifiers under the same circumstances in an effort to gain an advantage over opposing teams. On Wednesday, Honduras struggled to create much on the attacking end, but did manage several decent attempts in the second half. The teams best chance came in the 52nd minute when striker Jerry Bengtson beat Switzerland goalkeeper Diego Benaglio but had his shot cleared off the line by defender Ricardo Rodriguez. A few minutes later, Honduras screamed for a penalty after substitute Jerry Palacios went down in the area with Switzerland defender Johan Djourou on his back, but Pitana decided otherwise. "The second half was very good. We had three or four chances to score, but to score a goal is a different story," said Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez, who said he would not continue as coach of the national team. "In a sense, we disappointed our nation." Switzerland and Honduras played each other at the World Cup in South Africa exactly four years ago, on June 25, 2010, but that match ended in a 0-0 draw and both teams were eliminated. This time, the Swiss move on and Hitzfeld has plenty more work to do against Argentina. "(Its) going to be a match that we have nothing to lose. We have a lot to gain," Hitzfeld said. "We do have a chance, even against Argentina." ------ Lineups: Honduras: Noel Valladares; Brayan Beckeles, Victor Bernardez, Maynor Figueroa, Juan Carlos Garcia; Oscar Boniek Garcia (Andy Najar, 77), Jorge Claros, Wilson Palacios, Roger Espinoza (Marvin Chavez, 46); Carlo Costly (Jerry Palacios, 40), Jerry Bengtson. TORONTO - Players on the U.S. mens soccer team have thrown their support behind the women fighting against artificial turf at the 2015 Womens World Cup.The U.S. National Soccer Team Players Association issued a statement Monday saying its members fully support the womens national team players from around the world in their efforts to play on natural grass at the 2015 Womens World Cup.We know firsthand the importance of playing the World Cup on natural grass and the ways playing on artificial turf changes the games fundamentals. the statement said. We have all played on artificial turf and we know there are circumstances where it is appropriate or conditions require its use, but the World Cup is not one of those circumstances. To play the Womens World Cup on artificial turf would be a serious mistake. The association represents the U.S. mens national team players on compensation, working conditions and other matters. It also is the membership organization for alumni members of the U.S. mens team.It has no link to the American womens team.A group of elite female players from around the world has launched a legal challenge to the use of turf with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, arguing that it discriminates against women because the men do not play their showcase tournament on artificial surfaces.U.S. star Abby Wambach is one of several American women behind the challenge.FIFA and the Canadian Soccer Association have dismissed the claim, saying the laws of the game allow playing on turf as long as it is of a certain quality. Its not as much about the legal challenge. Its about the importance of the World Cup and the Womens World Cup is a World Cup, Mark Levinstein, acting executive director and general counsel of the U.S. National Soccer Team Players Association, said in an interview. And we think its important that whoevers playing in a World Cup, that the World Cup is treated with a certain amount of respect. That the U.S. men support playing on natural grass is not a surprise. But by doing so formally, they have injected themselves into the debate. There is much for the men at stake in this debate too, with FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke saying recently that a mens World Cup could be held on artificial surfaces sooner rather than later. The statement from the U.S. mens team players gives the women another weapon in their arsenal, not to mention another headline. Both sides have taken turns firing salvos in the war of words, with FIFA using its website to strategically release information on its side of the argument. The association representing the U.S. mens team players also weighed in on allegations that FIFA and national associations have pressured women not to join the legal challenge. We support the right of the women players to stand up for what they believe, said the association. No player should ever be threatened with exclusion from their national team, damage to their career, or adverse consequences to their national team or the sport in their country (such as exclusion from the World Cup or damaging their countrys chances of hosting a World Cup) for exercising their legal rights, especially when they are trying to protect the sport, the fans, and their fellow players. The message is simple and unequivocal: the World Cup should not be played on artificial turf and the organizers and the players should work together to schedule the games on grass for the benefit of the sport, the players, and the fans who will be attending and watching this and future Womens World Cups. There seems no immediate solution, with the Canadian Soccer Association rejecting an offer of early mediation from the Human Rights Tribunal of Canada. The CSAs position is because the players claim has no validity, there is need to negotiate. And with the tournament starting in June, time is trickling away although the women say a solution — temporary grass surfaces or use of venues with real grass — could happen on relatively short notice. The Human Rights Tribunal rejected the players bid for an expedited hearing, offering up the early mediation instead and has several other matters on the issue to resolve before a full hearing can take place. The Canadian tournament runs June 6 to July 5 in Moncton, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver.Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter Kevan Miller Jersey . "Ill be bidding, but many other people will be bidding," the billionaire businessman said on Fox News ahead of a Tuesday deadline for prospective owners to submit initial offers. The National Football League franchise is for sale following the death in March of owner Ralph Wilson. "I would say the chances are very, very unlikely, because Im not going to do something totally stupid," Trump said, "Maybe just a little bit stupid, but not totally stupid." Others who have shown interest in buying the Bills include Buffalo Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula, former Sabres owner B. Thomas Golisano and a group that includes rocker Jon Bon Jovi and Canadian partners Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, and the Rogers family of Toronto-based Rogers Communications. Trumps lawyer Michael Cohen told The Associated Press the moguls bid package would be submitted Tuesday afternoon. The Pegulas also submitted a bid, according to a person familiar with the sale process who spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the sale is private. The Bills most recently were valued by Forbes at $870 million but are expected to sell for at least $1 billion, partly because NFL teams rarely go on the market. "Im ... somebody that likes to buy for the right price," Trump said. "Right now you see pricing of certain types of assets - including real estate assets - theyree going through the roof.dddddddddddd." About 10 prospective ownership groups submitted nondisclosure agreements to Morgan Stanley, the banking firm overseeing the Bills sale on behalf of Wilsons estate. Not all will necessarily follow up with a bid. Because the sale process is private, Morgan Stanley will not make names of would-be buyers public. The firm will review the initial non-binding bids and is expected within the next week to determine which groups may progress to the next stage of bidding. The new owner could be identified by Labor Day and be presented to NFL owners for approval during league meetings in early October. Meanwhile, representatives of the Bon Jovi group who have been exploring potential stadium sites scheduled a meeting with upstate New York developer Scott Congel, a person familiar with the meeting told the AP on Tuesday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the group has not disclosed who it is meeting with and the person wasnt authorized to do so. Congel, the son of Pyramid Management Group owner Robert Congel, has proposed building a stadium on a former mall site in the Buffalo suburb of West Seneca. Syracuse-based Pyramid is one of the largest shopping mall developers in the northeast. The AP reported last week that the Bon Jovi group had conducted a feasibility study that included building a stadium in Toronto but also planned to meet with two Buffalo-area developers. A lease agreement essentially locks the Bills into staying in Buffalo through the 2019 season. It is unclear if the group would eventually want to move the team to Toronto. ' ' '

SAN FRANCISCO -- Tim Lincecum has talked the past few years about rediscovering the consistency that won him two NL Cy Young Awards and made him one of baseballs best pitchers. Lincecums last two outings have brought him awfully close to finding that form again. The rejuvenated right-hander followed his second career no-hitter with another vintage performance, pitching eight sharp innings to lead the San Francisco Giants past the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 on Tuesday night. "We try to go out there and duplicate when things are feeling good," Lincecum said. "We tried to do that today. All my pitches were working when I threw them. They werent super nasty -- they were just located a little better than usual." Maybe more than a little. Lincecum (7-5) allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the fourth and stayed out of trouble the rest of the way, helping San Francisco snap a four-game losing streak since his latest gem against San Diego. Lincecum left after throwing 113 pitches, including 73 for strikes -- the exact same line as his no-hitter against the Padres last week -- before Jean Machi pitched a drama-free ninth. "I think the two (starts), if you look at them, its hard to find a big difference," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Its a guy that had command of all his pitches." Pablo Sandoval hit his 100th career homer to cap a three-run fourth for the Giants, and he got a bottle of bubbly in the clubhouse afterward. San Francisco also scored twice in the fifth to chase Marco Gonzales (0-1) in the left-handers second career start. Gonzales gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings. St. Louis has lost three straight and four of five in a tough stretch against the leagues hottest pitchers. The Cardinals faced a pitcher with a no-hitter this season for the third time in five games. After Josh Beckett and Clayton Kershaw led the Los Angeles Dodgers to victories over St. Louis, Allen Craig singled with one out in the second to put an early end to Lincecums bid for another no-hitter. Lincecum, who has shown signs of returning to his dominant form of late, showed the poise and polish of his younger days even when things started to go awry. Lincecum loaded the bases in the fourth before striking out Craig and Jon Jay and getting Daniel Descalso to ground out. Lincecum pounded his glove and received a standing ovation from the announced sellout crowd of 41,152. "It gets you fired up," right fielder Hunter Pence said. "When a guys making good pitches, you get him on the ropes youve got to make him bleed a little bit. That one slipped away," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. San Francisco supplied all the support Lincecum needed in the bottom of the inning. Buster Poseys double drove in a run before Sandovals wind-aided fly carried just over the wall in left to give San Francisco a 3-0 lead. "Its hard to hit one," said Sandoval, who wore his "lucky" boots for the first time in weeks trying to break San Franciscos skid. "Im excited to get this moment." Pence hit an RBI double and Hector Sanchez drove in another run in the fifth to put the Giants up 5-0. The performance from San Franciscos leading men -- Lincecum, Sandoval, Posey and Pence -- was a welcome turnaround for the teams fans. The Giants entered the game 1-6 on their homestand, including four straight losses to Cincinnati. It was the first time San Francisco had been swept in a four-game series at its waterfront ballpark, which opened in 2000. NOTES: Giants CF Angel Pagan is scheduled to be examined by a specialist in Los Angeles on Wednesday after having a setback in his recovery from a back injury while running. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- With interim coach John Loyer hoarsely shouting instructions, Brandon Jennings and the Detroit Pistons ran away from the San Antonio Spurs in the third quarter. Jennings finished with 21 points, and the Pistons beat San Antonio 109-100 on Monday night in Loyers first game at the helm. Detroit abruptly fired Maurice Cheeks on Sunday after only 50 games as coach, but although theyve been unimpressive for the most part this season, the Pistons have played better lately. The comfortable win over the Spurs was Detroits fifth in seven games. "I told them it was going to be an emotional day," Loyer said. "I told them I thought we can play, collectively, for longer periods of time better than we have." Rodney Stuckey scored 20 points for the Pistons, and Greg Monroe added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Marco Belinelli led the Spurs with 20 points. Detroit pulled even with Charlotte for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and the Pistons have shown flashes recently of the potential they thought theyd have this season. After signing Josh Smith and trading for Jennings in the off-season, Detroit is barely ahead of last seasons pace in terms of wins and losses. Jennings has been terrific lately, though. After scoring 35 points with 12 assists Saturday against Denver, he orchestrated another strong offensive effort Monday. San Antonio, meanwhile, turned the ball over eight times in the third quarter, when Detroit pushed its lead from 11 to 20. The Spurs finished with 19 turnovers, giving the Pistons all the help they would need. "We lost the game because we probably played the worst defence weve played all season, especially in the first half," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "We didnt bring it mentally or physically, and the Pistons did." Loyers sideline demeanour was quite a change from Cheeks more calm approach. At one point, Loyer came all the way across midcourt to give instructions as the Pistons were trying to hold on. "Theyre both two different coaches," Jennings said. "One is loud, the other one is kind of laid back. Theyre both great guys -- especially Cheeks. Hes like a father figure to me, so hes definitely going to be missed. But this is the NBA, so I know how that goes." The Pistons went on a 12-2 run in the third to take a 73-52 lead, then added a few more highlights later in that quarter. Smith threw down a one-handed dunk after a turnover by San Antonio, and Jennings made a layup after Detroits Andre Drummond blocked Aron Baynes shot emphatically off the glass. Jennings missed from the perimeter, then stole the ball near midcourt and went in for a three-point play to make it 84-62. "I told the guys today, just when we were in the locker room, Im so proud of them," Loyer said. "I only thought there was about a three-minute period where they showed more energy, more determination than us. You show determination, hustle for 45 of the 48 minutes, youre going to be pretty successful most nights." San Antonio is in the midst of a nine-game road swing. Belinelli was back after dealing with back spasms, but the Spurs were without Manu Ginobili (left hamstring) and Kawhi Leonard (right hand). The Pistons went on a 15-4 run in the second quarter, capped by a 3-pointer by Jennings that put them ahead 57-45. "They played hard," San Antonios Danny Green said. "They wanted to play with some passion and they got loose balls." NOTES: The Pistons have won five straight at home after starting 7-15 at The Palace. ... After Cheeks firing, Popovich was asked about the key to his longevity with the Spurs. "I have information on everybody," he joked. "And Ive threatened everybody Ill let it out unless they keep me as long as I want to stay." ... Ginobili has joined the Spurs on this road trip, but hes not expected to play until after the All-Star break. Fake Yeezy Kaufen Deutschland . Didnt need any help this time. Edwin Encarnacion led off the seventh with a homer to tie the game 3-3 and, with two out in the seventh, Munenori Kawasaki came through with the two-out single to score pinch-runner Steve Tolleson with what proved to be the winning run.DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies connected for five homers and not one by a player named CarGo or Tulo. "Cant count on (them) to do all the damage," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. They definitely showed that theres more to this team than sluggers Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki. Charlie Blackmon hit two homers and Jorge De La Rosa threw five efficient innings, lifting the Colorado Rockies to an 8-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. Nolan Arenado, Wilin Rosario and Corey Dickerson also homered for the Rockies, whove won four of the last five. It was Blackmons first multihomer game of his career. "When were clicking as a team, and everybody is hitting the ball hard, up and down the order, its just that feeling of, Were going to get em," said Blackmon, who raised his average to .411. "Obviously, youd like to save some of your home runs for those really close games, but its also nice to take them when you can get them." De La Rosa (1-3) rediscovered his rhythm, allowing five hits and one run for his first victory of the season. The hard-throwing lefty tied a career high with 16 wins last season. He also was on the same page with Rosario all night, something that wasnt the case during the season opener in Miami when the battery mates couldnt get their signals straight. Backup catcher Jordan Pacheco has been behind the plate for De La Rosas last three starts. But Weiss didnt want to create a situation where De La Rosa had a personal catcher, so he went with Rosario, who actually had a calming influence on the sometimes excitable De La Rosa. In the third inning, Rosario sauntered out to the mound to briefly chat with De La Rosa after he loaded the bases with no outs. Rosario basically told him to relax and it worked as Buster Posey hit into a 6-4-3 double play -- bringing in a run -- and Michael Morse flew out to left. "Mixed my pitches really good with Wilin," De La Rosa said. "That was the key." Rosario also helped his pitcher out at the plate, too, lining a three-run homer..dddddddddddd Its his third homer of the season. De La Rosa walked off the mound in the fifth to applause after striking out Morse to escape a jam with runners on second and third. Tommy Kahnle took over and struck out five in two innings. Its just the sixth time a reliever has done that in Rockies history. Ryan Vogelsong (0-1) never got on track and was pulled after 1 1-3 innings, his shortest start with the Giants. He surrendered five runs and six hits, including three homers. "Im definitely not happy about it," Vogelsong said. "Its embarrassing really." Colorado pounced on the Giants in the first, with Arenado and Rosario hitting homers off Vogelsong, who threw 44 pitches in the inning. It didnt get any better in the second when Blackmon hit a solo homer off Vogelsong. The Giants pulled him four batters later. His replacement, reliever David Huff, bailed the Giants out of more trouble by getting an inning ending double play. Huff strained his left quadriceps muscle running out his first big league hit the next inning and was taken out of the game. Huff will get an MRI on Tuesday. "It doesnt look good," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "More than likely hes heading to the DL." The Rockies placed right fielder Michael Cuddyer on the disabled list Monday with a strained left hamstring. Blackmon slid over to right and Dickerson played centre. They were a combined 5 of 8 with three homers. "Its nice when the rest of the lineup is doing some damage," Weiss said. NOTES: OF Angel Pagan was ejected in the seventh for arguing a called third strike. ... Vogelsongs shortest start of his career was Sept. 24, 2004, when he was with Pittsburgh. He faced seven Cincinnati batters and didnt record an out. ... LHP Madison Bumgarner (2-1) will take the mound Tuesday. But its a start. Wily Peralta allowed one run in 6 1-3 innings, and the Brewers beat the Cardinals 5-1 Wednesday to avoid a series sweep. Milwaukee, which entered the series with a nine-game winning streak, had one run and six hits in losing the first two games to St. Louis. The Cardinals won last years season series 14-5. "Whats really important -- most important -- is we lost two games to begin the series and we got that game back," Roenicke said. "Its important against our division, but we have to win more games than they do. Its not head to head. We have to win more games this season then they do. Thats what were playing for." Peralta (2-0) allowed six hits and struck out three, and three pitchers combined for scoreless relief. "He was a show-stopper today," Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy said. "He stopped their momentum and shut them down. He was a lot of fun to catch." Cardinals starter Joe Kelly (1-1) gave up an unearned run and three hits in four innings. Kelly left in the middle of the fourth inning with left hamstring tightness after trying to beat out a bunt attempt in the top half. "I felt like I tried to step a little quicker, maybe a little overextend and hit the bag a little bit before it and ended up tweaking it," said Kelly, who said he was scheduled to return to St. Louis for additional examination and treatment. "I was feeling pretty good. I had three pitches working for me first time the whole year. I had a slider, and a pretty good curve ball breaking down and had some velocity on my fastball and was locating it." Milwaukee went ahead in the third inning when first baseman Matt Adams misplayed Loggan Schafers leadoff bouncer for an error, Peralta sacrificed and Carlos Gomez hit an RBI double to the wall in right-centre, one pitch after bunting foul.dddddddddddd. The Brewers boosted the lead to 4-0 in the fifth against Seth Maness. Wily Peralta reached when his two-out liner went off the glove of shortstop Jhonny Peralta. Gomez walked, Jean Segura reached on an infield single, Lucroy followed with a two-run single and Aramis Ramirez had an RBI single. "I saw the replay," Roenicke said on Wily Peraltas hit. "I thought the ball did something funny on him. When they showed the replay from the centre-field camera, you can see the ball slowly turn over, which gives you the idea its going to knuckle a little bit. It kind of jumped behind him." Allen Craig hit his first home run of the season, a sixth-inning drive off Peralta. Pat Neshek walked pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay with the bases loaded in the eighth. NOTES: Ryan Braun, still bothered by an ailing right thumb, was held out of the starting lineup. Braun, hitting 269, has three homers and 10 RBIs -- but all the homers and seven RBIs came at Philadelphia on April 8. ... Roenicke is pleased with the defensive play of new 1B Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay. Brewers first basemen had 21 errors last year, including 10 by Juan Francisco. "I did hear when we first got him, through the grapevine, that hes got good hands," Roenicke said of Reynolds, primarily a third baseman for much of his career. "He doesnt have great foot speed, but range-wise, he does a nice job." ... Official scorer Tim ODriscoll originally credited Wily Peralta with a single in the fifth, then changed it to an error on Jhonny Peralta, then after the game ruled it a hit for Wily Peralta. ' ' '

Gordon went just 11 laps Saturday before he told his crew he couldnt continue. He left out of a side door of his hauler and was escorted out of the track to get treatment. Crew chief Alan Gustafson said the team would not run the car in the final practice session and instead will get it ready for Sundays race. "Ive had some spasms in the past, but this one, it was a little bit different," said the 42-year-old Gordon. "And so I just want to really be cautious and take care of it. It doesnt do me any good to be in the car right now." Gustafson said the plan was for Gordon to start the longest event in NASCAR. Should the pain be too much, then Smith would take over the Hendrick Motorsports car. Gustafson said Gordon felt back pain after qualifying Thursday night and had hoped things would improve before Saturdays practice sessions. But "after the first run, we talked about it and it was pretty detrimental to him physically to continue," Gustafson said. Gordon said on Twitter he planned to rest and "be ready for 600 miles 2moro." The four-time series champion is having one of the steadiest starts of his career with eight top-10 finishes in the first 11 races. Gordon moved into the points lead following a second-place finish at Texas Motor Speedwway in early April and hes stayed out front ever since.dddddddddddd He cemented his place in the Sprint Cups championship Chase two weeks ago with a victory at Kansas Speedway. Gordon will start 27th and hope his back holds out for 400 laps around the 1.5-mile race track. "Luckily, we had a good 11 laps there and weve got our teammates and information that were going to be able to gather from them," Gordon said. "Its all coming together very fast right now." Gordon has had back spasms in the past and even considered retiring because of the severe pain. Regular treatment has kept the pain mostly in check and Gustafson hopes that will be the case again for Sunday. Doctors "will get him in the best condition he can and get him ready to run tomorrow," Gustafson said. This weeks race marks the 20th anniversary of Gordons first Sprint Cup victory. His crew chief then, Ray Evernham, said Gordon is much tougher than some believe and has raced through illness and pain before. "We won the Southern 500 (at Darlington) when he started throwing up halfway" through the race, said Evernham, currently working for Hendrick Motorsports. Evernham said Gordon believes his car is ready and is being smart by not hurting himself further by practicing. "Hell do everything he needs to do to get to feeling good and I know him and tomorrow night in that car, he may need some help getting out of it, but when hes in it, hes going to be at 100 per cent," Evernham said. PORTLAND, Ore. -- San Antonio stars Tim Duncan and Tony Parker took the night off Wednesday. No matter. As is usual when the Spurs are without their stars, the rest of the team got the job done. Patty Mills came off the bench to score 29 points, Marco Belinelli hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:34 remaining and San Antonio rallied in the second half to pull out a 111-109 victory over the Trail Blazers. San Antonio has won two of three games this season when Duncan and Parker were both absent from the lineup. Mills helped fill the void with a 24-point second half. The fourth-year guard from Australia came off the bench to hit 13 of 26 shots against the Blazers. Belinelli had 20 points and Manu Ginobili 16 for San Antonio. Mills has been on a hot streak since the All-Star break concluded, scoring 25 and 29 points in the Spurs first two games back. "If it wasnt for him the last couple nights, we would have really struggled," San Antonio forward Danny Green said. "Hes doing what Tony usually does, in taking over in that fourth quarter." Mills explained his recent stretch in humble tones, saying "for me, its just been learning from great guys. Weve got three future Hall of Famers and a great coach, so Ive just sat back and learned." It wasnt just Mills, though. Belinelli hit four 3-pointers, and Tiago Splitter had 15 points and six rebounds in returning to the lineup for the first time since Feb. 6. "I thought the effort was fantastic," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. Portland was without leading scorer and rebounder LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed the game with a groin injury and is expected to be out at least a week. Also sidelined were forward Joel Freeland (knee) and centre Meyers Leonard (ankle). Aside from Duncan and Parker, the Spurs also were without guard Kawhi Leonard (right hand). Damian Lillard scored 31 points, including 15 during the fourth quarter, for Portland. Coming off his first All-Star game appearance, Lillard hit 13 of 21 shots and handed out six assists. Mo Williams had 19 points and Wesley Matthews 18 for the Blazers. Without Aldridge, Freeland and Leonard, the Blazers had to resort to playing a small lineup. It resulted in erratic play, with stretches when the Blazers offence went missing. "We tried to beat San Antonio at their game and they did it better than us," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "San Antonio is used to playing these games without their guys and they plug guys in and they play well." Trailing 81-79 after three quarters, San Antonio took command when Green hit back-to-back 3-pointers to fuel a 10-0 run at the fourth quarters outset. The Spurs led by as many as 10 points, but the Blazers eventually pulled even at 101-101 on Matthews steal and dunk with 1:52 remaining. On San Antonios next possession, Belinelli hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:34 left to put the Spurs back on top. Portland led by as many as eight points during the first half, and settled for a 52-51 halftime lead. Both teams had big runs during a free-flowing third quarter. Mills finished an 8-2 run with a layup to give San Antonio a 69-61 lead. Portland responded with seven consecutive points, then took a 79-75 lead when Williams scored six consecutive points late in the quarter. NOTES: Portland was the last NBA team to use the same starting lineup this season until Wednesday, when Dorell Wright replaced Aldridge against San Antonio. The Blazers are the first team since the 2010-11 Spurs to start the same lineup during its first 53 games. . Splitter returned to the lineup after missing the past four games with a calf injury. . Blazers forward Victor Claver, who hasnt played since Nov. 15 and has logged just three minutes of playing time this season, made a first-quarter appearance and played seven minutes . Yoenis Cespedes homered twice, Josh Donaldson hit a tiebreaking shot in the seventh inning and Oakland overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Yankees 7-4 Wednesday night for its fifth straight victory. The highest-scoring team in the majors this season, the As will go for a three-game sweep Thursday afternoon. They are 12-3 against New York since July 19, 2012. "I think theres the sense of the way we play that we have something to prove," said Doolittle, who earned his seventh save. "Weve got a little bit of a chip on our shoulder, small-market team, and we dont get a ton of national publicity. And when we get a chance to play against the Yankees on a big stage in their ballpark, guys step up." Donaldson connected off Jose Ramirez, who was making his major league debut, and added a pair of infield singles. Cespedes also had three hits to help the As move a season-best 15 games over .500 at 37-22, the best mark in the American League. "We never give up," Cespedes said through a translator. Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits, including an early three-run homer, but the Yankees matched a season worst with their fourth consecutive defeat. Theyve been outscored 21-0 from the seventh inning on during the slide. Derek Jeter made a costly error and New York dropped to 1-5 on a seven-game homestand with its 12th loss in the last 16 at Yankee Stadium. Jesse Chavez (5-3) hung around for six innings, long enough to get the win when his teammates rallied. Dan Otero got Brian McCann on a weak grounder with runners at the corners to protect a one-run lead in the seventh. Otero also worked a scoreless eighth and Doolittle got three quick outs to extend his career-best shutout streak to 16 1-3 innings. "Our bullpen down there is so deep and so well-rounded out that we really dont have a hole," Chavez said. "The guys come in and they attack, and I think thats why theyre so good in those situations." Cespedes started Oaklands comeback with a leadoff homer to centre in the fourth. Jed Lowrie hit a deep sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Yankees starter Vidal Nuno was pulled one out shy of qualifying for a win.dddddddddddd He left with a 4-2 lead after 92 pitches. Cespedes hit another leadoff shot in the sixth, this one off Matt Daley barely clearing the short porch in right. Derek Norris reached on Jeters throwing error from shortstop and scored the tying run on Alberto Callaspos long sacrifice fly. "We had our chances to add on and we werent able to do it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "The guys are doing everything they can, but right now we just arent getting it done." Just called up from the minors, Ramirez (0-1) entered in the seventh. He retired his first batter but then gave up Donaldsons 16th homer on his fifth major league pitch. The drive to left field gave the As a 5-4 advantage. "I was a little nervous," Ramirez said through a translator. "I wasnt really thinking about pitching tonight but I knew the chance would be there because of our bullpen situation." Oakland has gone deep in 12 consecutive games, hitting 22 homers during that span. "Anytime you fall behind 4-0, you dont really expect to win these games even though you might think it," Otero said. "Our offence, its only a matter of time sometimes before they break out, and they showed it tonight again." The AL West leaders added two insurance runs in the ninth on a hit batter and a sacrifice fly against Wade LeBlanc in his Yankees debut. Craig Gentry made a sensational catch in left-centre to rob Gardner of at least a double in the first. Moments earlier, Donaldson hit a trickler toward third that stopped rolling right on the line just inches from the bag. The slugger clapped his hands emphatically at first base, drawing chuckles from teammates in the dugout. "That ball didnt even get to third base," he said. "Its just one of those things where you really appreciate a hit like that." NOTES: Gentry started in place of CF Coco Crisp, given a night off to rest his nagging neck. ... Oakland has the best road record in the majors at 20-10. ... It was Cespedes fourth career multihomer games. The other three came in June last season. ... ARE, Sweden -- Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin won a World Cup slalom on Saturday to retain her season-long title with one race remaining. In her first slalom race since taking Olympic gold, the 18-year-old American led from start to finish just as she did at Sochi two weeks ago. Shiffrin had a combined two-run time of 1 minute, 50.66 seconds, 0.60 ahead of Maria Pietilae-Holmner of Sweden. Another Swede, Anna Swenn-Larsson, got her first career podium finish in third, 1.50 back. Shiffrin earned 100 World Cup points for her fourth victory of the season and moved 130 clear of Frida Hansdotter of Sweden, who placed fourth. Five days before her 19th birthday, Shiffrin, who is from Vail, Colorado, now has Olympic and world championship gold medals and two World Cup titles in her specialist event. In a tight race for the overall World Cup title, Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany retook the standings lead from Anna Fenninger of Austria, who does not race slalom. Hoefl-Riesch placed seventh, trailing Shiffrin by 3.26, to earn 36 race points. She moved 29 ahead of Fenninger as she seeks to repeat her 2011 overall title, which she won by just three points from American Lindsey Vonn. The final four races are scheduled next week at Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Shiffrin made the slalom finale next Saturday meaningless, with Hansdotter dropping from second-fastest in the first run. Second-run racers coped with steadily falling snow and poor visibility after morning sunshine lit the first-leg course.
