DETROIT -- Clarke MacArthur and the Ottawa Senators snapped their three-game losing streak in an unlikely venue. MacArthur scored two goals, and the Senators outlasted Detroit in a testy third period to beat the Red Wings 4-2 on Saturday night. Ottawa won for the first time in four games, and the Senators have also taken two in a row at Joe Louis Arena for only the second time. They beat the Red Wings 6-1 in Detroit on Oct. 23. "Coming here is never easy," MacArthur said. "Youve lost three in a row and you come in here and get a win." Bobby Ryan scored the tiebreaking goal on a two-man advantage with 16:09 remaining for the Senators, and MacArthur added an insurance goal later in the third period. Chris Neil also scored for Ottawa. Pavel Datsyuk tied it at 2 early in the third -- with the Red Wings enjoying a 5-on-3 power play. But Ottawa took advantage of its own opportunity when Detroit was down two men, going back ahead on Ryans goal. Detroits Daniel Alfredsson was out of the lineup against his former team because of a groin injury. Ottawas only other back-to-back wins at Detroit were separated by nearly 18 months. The Senators beat the Red Wings 2-1 on Oct. 24, 1995, then beat them 3-2 on April 11, 1997. Darren Helm scored in the first period for the Red Wings, who have won only one of their last nine games -- although they have earned points in six thanks to a string of games that went beyond regulation. Detroit is 4-4-6 at home this season. Datsyuk tied this one just over a minute into the third period. He sent what looked like a pass across the goal mouth, but the puck caromed off the left skate of Ottawa defenceman Jared Cowen and past goalie Robin Lehner for Datsyuks 12th goal. But with Helm in the box for hooking, Detroits Kyle Quincey received a four-minute, high-sticking penalty, giving Ottawa a 5-on-3 edge for 81 seconds. The Senators needed all but 5 seconds, but Ryan finally one-timed a shot past goalie Jimmy Howard from a sharp angle to the left of the net. It was his 11th goal of the season. It wasnt long before the Red Wings were up two men again -- their third 5-on-3 of the game. This one lasted 92 seconds. Ottawa killed it, although moments after one of the penalties expired, Detroits Johan Franzen batted a rebound into the net with his left hand. The goal was immediately disallowed. "We dont want to give up three or four 5-on-3s," MacArthur said. "I dont know if their skates were sharpened but they went down really easy a couple of times." MacArthurs power-play goal with 4:02 to play made it 4-2. Lehner had 34 saves. Howard stopped 25 shots. Neil and Detroits Brendan Smith fought in the second period, and the third period was full of skirmishes and penalties. There were nine minor penalties called in the third, in addition to Quinceys double minor. Detroits Niklas Kronwall, Gustav Nyquist and Howard were all called for penalties in the final 5:51, limiting any chance of a comeback. "I didnt like the Kronwall penalty. I thought it was an awful call, but other than that, you deserve what you get," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "You cant be in the box all night. No one gets into rhythm like that." The Senators led 2-1 after the first period despite being outshot 17-7. Detroit controlled the early stages and had the games first eight shots. The Red Wings finally took the lead on a power-play goal by Helm. Ottawa answered with two goals in 2:21. MacArthur was able to lift the puck into the net after a scramble in front of Howard, and the Senators took the lead on Neils goal. "Were a desperate team right now. We need every win and to get on a roll," Lehner said. "A lot of things went right after the first 10 minutes. It was a really good game." Detroit had a two-man advantage for 1:33 in the second, but Ottawa killed it, to the delight of a group of Senators fans high above the goal Ottawa was defending. NOTES: Detroits Todd Bertuzzi missed the game with an upper-body injury. Stephen Weiss returned to the lineup for the Red Wings, coming off the injured list earlier Saturday. Weiss had been out with a groin injury. ... Cowen appeared to catch Datsyuk in the head with his left arm in the third period, but the Detroit star was able to keep playing. Cheap Retro Jordan . A better question yet may be this: How many times has the same player been involved in both? Morneau hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning and helped the Colorado Rockies turn the third triple play in team history as they beat the San Diego Padres 8-6 on Sunday. Fake Jordan . Discount Air Jordan . -- Syracuse was dangerously close to letting another less talented opponent pull off the upset when C.ALAMEDA, Calif. - Derek Carrs demeanour has stayed remarkably the same even as the losses keep piling up for the winless Oakland Raiders. If the pressure and strain of an 0-9 start is wearing on the rookie quarterback, Carr isnt showing it.Hes a mature guy, a mature player, wide receiver James Jones said Wednesday. He understands at a young age that there are going to be times like this, in your career and in your life. You take it and run with it, you dont put your head down. You look at it in the face and you fight it.The Raiders are riding a 15-game losing streak that predates the arrival of Carr, Oaklands second-round draft pick this year. They are the only winless team in the NFL and are trying to avoid becoming just the second in to go 0-16 in a season.Carr played fairly well during the first two months but has regressed the past two weeks. He has thrown four interceptions in the previous two games and has completed only one pass longer than 25 yards in that time. That has raised concerns whether Carr is capable of being the franchise quarterback, though interim coach Tony Sparano has been quick to defend him.Not that he needs it.The 23-year-old Carr has a poise that many veterans lack. He insists his confidence is high and that he isnt feeling the heat from critics or fans.To be honest, if you were to come and just hang out in our locker room or hang out in our meetings, guys are driven to get better, Carr said. When the effort goes down, thats bad. The energy level is honestly like were 9-0. Guys are running around still striving to do what they can to make this thing right.Hopefully it will be sooner than later, but its going to happen one of these days. With little support from the running game to keep defences honest, the Raiders have been unsuccessful in tryiing to stretch the field with the passing game.ddddddddddddarr completed only 58.5 per cent of his throws and was picked off twice against the Seattle Seahawks. He followed that with two more interceptions last week against the Denver Broncos. He came back to throw a late touchdown in the loss to Denver and was thankful Sparano left him in the game despite the lopsided score.I should be out there no matter what, good, bad or ugly, Carr said. And for a long time it was ugly. For me it was important to continue to finish. I wanted to go out there and compete one last time and try to correct the things wed been trying to correct all game. We got to do that.Carr had his best game of the season in Week 6 when he passed for 282 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-28 loss to San Diego. The Raiders play the Chargers again this Sunday in what Carr says is his first time facing the same team twice in one season. One thing for me is you know their personnel, Carr said. For me as a rookie, thats always something thats unknown. You can see something on film, but until youre really out there playing against somebody and you see him for the first time, you dont really know. So thats something thats really helpful.NOTES: Right tackle Menelik Watson was held out of practice but did conditioning work on the side. Watson sustained a concussion in the loss to Denver. Second-year player Matt McCants took reps with the first-team offence in Watsons absence. ...
