While the Toronto Maple Leafs signed head coach Randy Carlyle to a two-year extension on Thursday, the contract includes a team option for the final year. Carlyle had one year left on his existing deal, meaning his new contract runs through the 2016-17 season. "Leafs are not locked into Carlyle. If things dont work out, hes gone next year or year after," tweeted TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger. Carlyles assistants Dave Farrish, Greg Cronin and Scott Gordon were not retained for next season. "We feel that this group can continue to grow into a higher level of a hockey club," said Carlyle during a conference all on Thursday. "We just have to find and continue to push for a little bit more from the individuals and we are going to do everything we possibly can to change some of the things that are happening with our group." The Maple Leafs started the 2013-14 season on a 10-4-0 run, but Carlyle worried at the time that his team was getting away with sloppy play in the defensive zone. Going into and coming out of the Olympic break, the Leafs were rolling despite being badly outshot on most nights. When they beat the Kings in Los Angeles on March 13, they were in second place in the division. But starting goaltender Jonathan Bernier aggravated a groin injury that night, and though it was not considered serious at the time, it proved to be devastating. James Reimer lost five straight games and was pulled March 23 against the New Jersey Devils before Bernier returned and lost three more. The final night of that losing streak, March 29 against the Detroit Red Wings, was effectively the death knell for Torontos playoff hopes. NHL Jerseys . Veterans on teams outside Alberta have already voted and are in a legal strike position but the Eskimos and Stampeders were unable to vote earlier due to provincial labour laws. If they vote in favour of a strike, the earliest they could do so is Wednesday night in accordance with the legislation. The CFL and its players have been without a collective agreement since May 29. The CFL exhibition season is scheduled to begin Monday night with the Toronto Argonauts visiting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but with players on both teams in a legal strike position, that game could be threatened. CFL Players Association president Scott Flory didnt return a telephone message Friday while a league spokesman said commissioner Mark Cohon wasnt available for comment. The Eskimos and Stampeders will include their rookies in the vote because Alberta law requires all players to participate. Traditionally, first-year players dont vote because theyre not recognized as certified union members, but the players association is allowing them to do so to counter any potential legal challenge from the league. Some other teams in the league will also hold second votes Saturday to include their rookies. The two sides have been negotiating on a new collective bargaining agreement since February but reached an impasse on Monday when the league rejected the players latest offer. The league and unionn last met face to face May 29.dddddddddddd. Despite turning down the players offer Monday, the CFL extended the ratification bonus deadline to midnight ET on Friday. If the players accepted the leagues final offer in that timeframe, veterans would receive a $5,000 bonus while rookies would get $1,500. However, a league spokesman said the bonus clause would be taken off the table after the deadline. There has only been one strike since the CFLPA was formed in 1965. Three weeks of training camp were lost in 1974 before a new agreement was reached. No regular-season games were affected. The 2014 regular season is scheduled to kick off June 26. The two sides dont appear to be far apart on financial issues. The CFLPA has requested a $5.2-million salary cap and $4.8-million minimum. The CFL has countered with a $5-million cap. The two sides have agreed on boosting the minimum salary $5,000 to $50,000. After demanding specific revenue-sharing percentages, the CFLPA offer called for a fixed cap for at least two years. After the second, if league revenues increased by more than $18 million -- excluding the Grey Cup -- the two sides would renegotiate the cap or the entire agreement. The CFL offer called for the cap to be renegotiated if its revenues increased by $27 million or more in the third year. Non-monetary issues, such as player safety, practice roster size, eliminating the option year on CFL contracts and practice times, are also sticking points. ' ' '

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Shea Weber shot faster missing the net than any other player did hitting it. When he hit the net, it was even better. The Nashville Predators captain won the Hardest Shot competition at Saturday nights all-star skills competition by clocking in at 108.5 mph. Weber was just short of the record of 108.8 mph set by the Boston Bruins Zdeno Chara at the last all-star weekend in 2012 in Ottawa. You never really know how hard it is until it registers, Weber said. Its different, too. In a game you dont really see that. Guys dont skate right into a puck and take a slap shot. Guys are one-timers or standing still and taking it in different situations. In game situations, players would have to get in the way of that kind of shot.Everybody cringed, said all-star captain Nick Foligno of the host Columbus Blue Jackets, whose team beat Jonathan Toewss 25-19 to win the skills competition. Wouldnt ever want to have to block that.Webers 101.8 mph blast that missed the net and didnt count was better than anyone elses best attempt. Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin shot 101.4 twice, while Dustin Byfuglien of the Winnipeg Jets topped out at 97.3.Without Chara in the competition, Weber was the favourite going in. But he considers Chara the king.Hes the guy to beat all the time, hes got the big shot, Weber said. Honestly I was nervous because theres some guys out there that can rip it.Webers previous best was around 106 mph. Hes not sure if hell ever beat Charas record but thinks its possible.I just want to keep getting better every year, Weber said. I think as kids we strive to get better at everything we do. Its no different now. You dont want to get worse. You want to continually get better.Fastest skater: After being traded for him at Fridays all-star draft, Phil Kessel beat Tyler Seguin in their head-to-head heat. With the Toronto Maple Leafs on a six-game losing streak, it was Kessels first win in a while.Youre cold ... Youre trying not to fall and embarrass yourself, right? Kessel said.Rookie Jonathan Drouin of the Tampa Bay Lightning had the fastest time at 13.103 seconds. Sportvisions player tracking technology was used as part of the competition, as it will in Sundays game.Breakaway challenge: Ryan Johansen stole the show by bringing out 7-year-old Cole Vogt, son of Columbus Blue Jackets trainer Mike Vogt, to help him score and by getting teammates to do the Flying V from the Mighty Ducks movies. Jakub Voracek of the Philadelphia Flyers followed that by bringing out 21-year-old Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames to help him.I think that little kid was bigger than him. Lets be honest, Voracek said of Gaudreau. That was the plan. It was funny.Gaudreau, who wanted to light his stick on fire for the event because he plays for the Flames, was added to the all-star game as an injury replacement. Tyler Johnson of the Tampa Bay Lightning missed the skills competition with a lower-body injury, and will likely be out for Sundays game.Johansen won the breakaway challenge as a result of an online fan vote.Accuracy shooting: Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane needed just five shots to hit all four targets. Hes no Ray Bourque, but Kane won the competition by doing so in 13.529 seconds.Skills challenge relay: Steven Stamkos showed off his absurd ability to hit the net on one-timers from a sharp angle, and goaltenders Jaroslav Halak, Carey Price, Marc-Andre Fleury and Roberto Luongo got to try their hand at shooting and scoring on an empty net in a segment made for the likes of Martin Brodeur, Chris Osgood and Ron Hextall.Shootout: Kessel kept his good weekend going by scoring on Corey Crawford, and former Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash heard the boos from local fans. Nash asked for a trade out of Columbus and is tied for the NHL lead in goals for the Rangers.Thats how its been for the last three years, so I expected it, Nash said. In one ear and out the other. Ryan was selected by Anaheim with the second overall pick of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and became a highly-productive member of the franchise before being traded to Ottawa over the summer. Ryan could be facing an icy reception from Ducks fans on Sunday, but the talented winger appears to be taking it all in stride. "Im not sure," Ryan told the Senators official web site when asked what to expect on Sunday. "Itll be an emotional day. I spent six years there. Lot of friends and family in the area, so itll be an emotional day. But, hopefully, Ill be well received. Who knows?" The 26-year-old Ryan, who scored 30 or more goals four times during his time with the Ducks, was acquired on July 5 by the Senators for forwards Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen and a first-round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Ryan has two goals and two assists in his first four games with Ottawa. Silfverberg, meanwhile, already has four goals and an assist in four games with the Ducks. In fact, the 22-year-old winger is coming off a big game for Anaheim, as he scored twice to help lead the Ducks to Thursdays 6-0 rout of the visiting New York Rangers. "He just goes out and plays," Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau said of Silfverberg. "Hes a quiet guy and he does what he does. Hes a good enough player that he has some success." Daniel Winnik and Dustin Penner each posted a goal and an assist on Thursday, while Saku Kooivu and Ryan Getzlaf scored for the Ducks, who were playing their first home game of the season and have won three straight since losing to Colorado to start the year.dddddddddddd Jonas Hiller stopped 34 shots for his first shutout of the season in Thursdays win, which kicked off a five-game road trip. The Ducks enter Sunday facing a rash of injuries, as forwards Nick Bonino, Kyle Palmieri, Dustin Penner and Mathieu Perreault are all questionable for tonights game with various ailments. Anaheim has won two straight and five of its last six meetings against the Senators, who have dropped two of their last three games at the Honda Center. Ottawa is opening the season on a six-game road trip and has lost three straight after beginning the swing with a 1-0 victory in Buffalo. The Sens were in action Saturday in San Jose and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Sharks. Brent Burns buried the game-winner 7:08 into the third period, as San Jose handed Ottawa its first regulation loss of the season. Ryan and Zack Smith notched a goal apiece for the Senators, who received 47 saves from Robin Lehner in the loss. "Robin played real good," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "We just cant continue to take penalties, especially the undisciplined kind, the ones we are taking. You cant expect the goalie to keep killing them off." Senators No. 1 goaltender Craig Anderson expects to get the start on Sunday. He has not fared well against Anaheim in his career, posting a 2-6-0 record and a 3.34 goals against average in eight games versus the Ducks. ' ' '

Toronto coach Dwane Casey has been impressed with how the Raptors have handled a tough road trip against Western Conference foes, knowing that it will only make his team stronger as it moves ahead. Winning at NBA-best Golden State would be another leap forward. Toronto looks to avoid a 10th consecutive road loss to the Warriors while preventing Golden State from recording its longest home winning streak in nearly 25 years tonight. The East-leading Raptors (24-8) lost at Chicago on Dec. 22, then had four days off before opening a five-game trip with wins over the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver on back-to-back nights. They fell 102-97 to Portland in overtime Tuesday as Kyle Lowry scored a team-high 25 points. Despite his club blowing a 13-point lead, Casey came away proud of the Raptors effort against a Blazers team which has the leagues second-best record. I love the way we competed in a hostile environment, Casey said. If you can compete in that environment, the way we did (Tuesday), you can compete in a lot of places. Toronto hasnt fared well in Oakland since winning there Feb. 8, 2004, losing its last nine visits while giving up an average of 119.0 points. The Warriors (25-5) routed Philadelphia 126-86 on Tuesday for their 10th straight win at home, where they havent won 11 in a row since a team-record 15-game run Dec. 13, 1989-Feb. 15, 1990. With Andrew Bogut and Festus Ezeli still out with injuries, center Marreese Speights made his third straight start and matched his season high of 23 points against his former team. I didnt play him (much) a couple games and he just stayed ready, coach Steve Kerr said. Then he got himself in the rotation and hes been in ever since. Mos had a fantastic season scoring and doing his thing. Speights should continue seeing quality time due to the injuries. Bogut has missed 10 games due to chonodromalacia/bone edema in his right knee, and Ezeli has been out three straight with a left ankle sprain. Kerr isnt sure when either will be back. They are doing better and they are on the court moving around, but I dont really spend a lot of time asking them, Kerr said. Casey knows Toronto needs to be aware of Speights abilities, as well as Golden States tough defense. The Warriors rank fifth in turnovers forced at 16.3 per game and ninth in points allowed at 98.2. Speights is having an unbelievable year shooting the ball, Casey said. Theyre a well-rounded team offensively and they (havent compromised) their defense. People see all the offense, but they forget how good of a defensive team they really are. The Raptors have won eight of 10, an even more impressive run considering DeMar DeRozan has missed the last 16 games with a torn tendon in his groin. DeRozan went through his first full practice Thursday since getting hurt. He doesnt expect to play against Golden State and also could sit out when Toronto completes its trip Sunday in Phoenix, though his return is coming soon. DeRozan had 32 points to help overcome 34 from Stephen Curry as the Raptors ended a three-game overall skid to the Warriors with a 104-98 home victory in the most recent meeting March 2. Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks have agreed on what could be the final contract for the big German. A person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday that Nowitzki would get a three-year contract worth roughly $30 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced. New contracts cant be signed until next Thursday. The 36-year-old Nowitzki is taking a big pay cut with a contract similar in value and structure to the one Tim Duncan signed with San Antonio two years ago. Duncan, who also took a much lower salary, is exercising a player option to return for the final season of his deal after helping the Spurs win their fifth title since 1999. Nowitzki just completed a four-year deal worth $80 million, and he left money on the table in that deal hoping the Mavericks could get some pieces around him. The pursuit of other stars is even more urgent with Nowitzki getting close to the end of what figures to be a Hall-of-Fame career. The 2011 NBA Finals MVP put off finalizing the deal until after the Mavericks met with free agent Carmelo Anthony, which happened Wednesday night. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently acknowledged that he couldnt offer Anthony a max contract, so Dallas figures to be stressing the 2011 title led by coach Rick Carlisle, Nowitzki and centre Tyson Chandler, who recently rejoined the team in a trade with the New York Knicks. If the Mavericks miss out on Anthony, there are a number of other small forwards on their wish list, topped by Houstons Chandler Parsons. He is a restricted free agent, and the Rockets can match any offer. Dallas also wants to re-sign point guard Devin Harris, and will target several others at that position if Harris goes elsewhere. DOBBIACO, Italy -- Another podium finish for Canadian Alex Harvey on Friday. Harvey, of St-Ferreol-les-Neiges, Que., finished third in the gruelling 35-kilometre freestyle pursuit. The race was fifth of seven stages in the Tour de Ski circuit. Harvey, 25, started 35 seconds behind leader Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway. He tucked himself into a group of seven athletes, conserving energy for the first 18-kilometre high-speed climb on the mountain pass before the descent into Toblach. "My plan was to fight for dear life and hang on to that group," said Harvey. "It went a lot easier on the climb than I thought. "Its a unique race that we only do once a year and you really never know how far in you are. It is a challenge mentally and fun to chase people down and form little groups." Harvey also won gold in the prologue race at the Tour opener in Oberhof, Germany and was second in the sprint race in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. With heavy snow and warm conditions projected for the 10-kilometre classic-ski race in Val di Fiemme, Italy on Saturday, recovery will be critical for the final two stages. "Im really happy with how things went," said Harvey, who is third in the overall standings. "Heading into the Tour I was hoping for a few top-five finishes, but to be in the top-three overall the whole way is exciting." Johnsrud Sundby won the race to increase his overall lead, showing hell be a medal contender at next months Sochi Olympics. Sundby posted a time of one hour, 20 minutes, 18.7 seconds. Compatriot Petter Northug beat Harvey in a sprint for second, finishing 58.2 seconds behind Johnsrud Sundby. Harvey was third, 58.7 behind. "I tried to keep a steady pace," Sundby said. "Luckily I had a good day and was able to keep the gap." Still, Harvey registered his 10th career World Cup podium. He has two world championship medals. Devon Kershaw, of Sudbury, Ont., was 23rd in 1:23:24.0. Ivan Babikov, of Canmore, Alta., finished 28th in 1:23:25.0 despite skiing four of the first five kilometres without a pole. Sundby moved 1:03.2 ahead of Northug in the overall standings, with Harvey in third, 1:08.7 behind. In the womens 15-kilometre free pursuit, Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen of Norway maintained her overall lead by winning in 37:30.3. Two-time runner-up Therese Johaug, also of Norway, finished second, 38.7 behind, and Anne Kyllonen of Finland was third, 1:12.2 behind. In the overall standings, Jacobsen holds a 43.7-second lead over Johaug, with Kyllonen 1:22.2 behind in third. The Tour concludes over the weekend in Val di Fiemme, highlighted by the traditional climb up Mount Cermis on Sunday. "I know he has a lot of championships, but I have none," Beltran said. "Hopefully I can win one." Now 36 and still in search of his first World Series title, Beltran left the St. Louis Cardinals for a $45 million, three-year deal with the Yankees, his sixth major league team in 17 seasons. Beltran hit .296 last season with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs, reaching the World Series for the first time. Now hes on a team that expects to be in the World Series every year. "Of course we have to win," the eight-time All-Star outfielder said Monday after his first workout at the teams minor league complex. "I dont know how far we will go, but at least we have to do something positive, and better than what they did last year, no doubt about that." After missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years, New York embarked on a spending spree of nearly half-a-billion dollars, adding four marquee free agents in Beltran, Masahiro Tanaka, Brian McCann and Jacoby Ellsbury. "They went out and spent a lot money on players to try to improve the ballclub," Beltran said. "You want to be around an organization like that, where every year theyre trying to improve, theyre trying to get better." Second baseman Robinson Cano — the Yankees top hitter — did leave for a $240 million, 10-year deal with Seattle, while Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte both retired. "I think we have a real good team," Beltran said. "I believe the lineup that we have, we have a pretty good lineup." Beltran joined Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson and Eduardo Nunez three days before the first full-squad workout. After batting practice, instead of taking fly balls, Beltran fielded grounders at second with Roberts, signed as Canos replacement. "Im just trying to get to know the guys," Beltran said. "I was talking to Roberts a little bit there. Hes a switch-hitter..dddddddddddd. Im a switch-hitter. So, we were talking about, maybe, working together a little bit this year." Beltran did not get a chance to work out with Jeter, who announced last week that he will retire after the 2014 season. The Yankees captain, who has been practicing at the minor league complex for past four weeks, usually takes a few days off before formal workouts begin. "For me, hes been a big part of baseball," Beltran said. "I feel personally, he got enough of baseball. Hes been doing this so long, and doing it the right way. Hes a pro on, off the field. Its sad for baseball, youre going to lose a guy like that, but at the same time theres a lot of younger guys coming up that, hopefully, they could take his spot." "Being able to play with a guy that is a Hall of Famer, first-ballot Hall of Famer, is a great feeling," Beltran added. "Im just looking forward to playing with him, looking forward to hopefully have this team win a championship." NOTES: Manager Joe Girardi wouldnt go into detail on any problem the Yankees had with Canos lack of hustle at times. Hitting coach Kevin Long was quoted in Mondays editions of the New York Daily News as saying "If somebody told me I was a dog, Id have to fix that. When you choose not to, you leave yourself open to taking heat, and thats your fault. For whatever reason, Robbie chose not to." Girardi pulled Cano from a game against Tampa Bay in September 2008 when he was late retrieving Cliff Floyds hard grounder that caromed into shallow right field, then benched the second baseman the following night. "I have discussions with all of our players on how we expect them to play the game," Girardi said. ... Girardi also said RHP Michael Pineda, sidelined since shoulder surgery two years ago, looked good in his bullpen session Monday. Pineda is among the candidates for the No. 5 starter. ... RHP Yoshinori Tateyama, his arrival delayed by a visa issue, began workouts after missing two days. ' ' '

There was the European Cup final against Real Madrid in 1962, when he scored the last two goals to rally Benfica to a 5-3 victory and its second straight continental title. There was the 1966 World Cup quarterfinal against North Korea. With Portugal trailing 3-0, Eusebio inspired his team, striking for four goals that led to a 5-3 victory. Eusebio da Silva Ferreira, who was born into poverty in Africa and became one of the worlds top scorers during the 1960s, died Sunday at 71. He died at his Lisbon home of heart failure, his biographer, Jose Malheiro, said. Eusebio was admitted to the hospital several times over the past year for heart and respiratory problems. "A football genius and example of humility, an outstanding athlete and generous man, Eusebio was for all sports fans and for all Portuguese an example of professionalism, determination and devotion to the colours of the national jersey and of Benfica," Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho said in a statement. A bronze statue of Eusebio, poised to kick a ball, stands outside Benficas Stadium of Light, where fans began laying flowers after his death was announced. Eusebios coffin was to be taken to Benficas Stadium of Light so fans could pay respects. Known affectionately as the Black Panther for his athleticism and finishing touch, Eusebio was voted one of the 10 best players in soccer history. The Portuguese government declared three days of national mourning, with flags at half-staff. The Portuguese Football Federation ordered a minutes silence before Sundays Portuguese Cup games. Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal captain who plays for Real Madrid, commented on his Facebook page, "Always eternal Eusebio, rest in peace." Former Portugal captain Luis Figo, the 2001 FIFA world player of the year, tweeted, "The king!! Great loss for us all! The greatest!!" "I prefer to look upon him as immortal," Chelseas Portuguese coach, Jose Mourinho, told public broadcaster Radiotelevisao Portuguesa. Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva made a nationally televised address to the nation to praise the "affability and humility" of a man who never let stardom go to his head. "His talent brought joy for entire generations, even those who didnt live through the most glorious moments of his career," Cavaco Silva said. Eusebios biggest accomplishment may have been his play in leading Portugal to third place at the 1966 World Cup. But his agility and speed made him one of Europes most dangerous forwards for most of a career that lasted two decades. He was awarded the Ballon dOr in 1965 as Europes player of the year and twice won the Golden Boot -- in 1968 and 1973 -- for being top scorer in Europe. According to soccers governing body, he had 679 goals in 678 official games. FIFA President Sepp Blatter tweeted, "Football has lost a legend. But Eusebios place among the greats will never be taken away." German great Franz Beckenbauer also took to Twitter: "One of the greatest football players ever has passed away." At the 1966 World Cup, where Portugal lost in the semifinals to host and eventual champion England, Eusebio became even more popular at home when he wept openly as he left the field following the defeat.dddddddddddd He finished as the tournaments top scorer with nine goals. In 1998, a panel of 100 experts assembled by FIFA named him in its International Football Hall of Fame as one of the sports top 10 all-time greats. "Look, there are only two black people on the list: me and Pele," Eusebio said, referring to the Brazilian great who was a friend. "I regard that as a great responsibility because I am representing Africa and Portugal, my second homeland." He was a member of the 1976 Toronto Metros-Croatia team that won the NASL championship and scored the winning goal in the championship game. The team was inducted into the Canadian soccer hall of fame in 2010. Eusebio was born in Maputo, the Mozambican capital, during World War II when the southeast African country was still a Portuguese colony. He came from a poor family but sparkled for his local team and was lured by Benfica to Portugal when he was 18. His unpretentious and easy manner was complemented by his heart and skills. His popularity in Portugal was such that in 1964, when Italian clubs offered to buy Eusebio for sums that were astronomical for the time, the countrys then-dictator, Antonio Salazar, decreed the player a "national treasure" -- meaning he could not be sold abroad. Eusebio was a cornerstone of the Benfica team that won back-to-back European titles in the early 1960s. With Benfica, he won 11 Portuguese league titles and five Portuguese Cups. In the 1966 World Cup quarterfinal in Liverpool, Portugal got off to a dreadful start and was three goals down after 23 minutes. "We were taken completely by surprise," Eusebio told The Associated Press at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Portuguese had a second meeting with the North Koreans 44 years after the first. "I remember very clearly what (teammate Antonio) Simoes said when we were 3-0 down. He kept saying, s long as we dont go four goals down, were still in with a chance," Eusebio said. "And he was right." Eusebio led Portugals astonishing comeback by repeatedly charging at the North Korean defence, scoring four goals in just more than 30 minutes. After his first two goals, he picked the ball out of the net, ran back to midfield and placed the ball on the centre spot for the restart. He completed his hat trick in the 56th minute, evening the score. His fourth goal came on a penalty kick as North Koreas defence collapsed amid the onslaught. "That was the best game of my life in a Portugal jersey," Eusebio said. "It left its mark on me." Eusebio scored 41 goals in 64 games for Portugal. After five knee operations, he played his last game for Benfica in 1975. Eusebio then moved to North America, where he spent the last years of his career playing for the Boston Minutemen, Toronto, Las Vegas Quicksilver and Buffalo Stallions through 1980. Eusebio stayed at Benfica as an assistant coach after his retirement and travelled widely with the Portuguese national team as a paid "soccer ambassador." He is survived by his wife, Flora, two daughters and several grandchildren. ' ' '

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The handshakes and backslaps exchanged in the Miami Dolphins locker room late Sunday afternoon were gestures of consolation, not celebration, before players quietly slipped out the back door at the end of another disappointing season. Miami was eliminated from the scramble for the AFCs final wild-card berth by the New York Jets, who thrived in the role of spoilers against their archrivals and won 20-7. The Dolphins blew an early lead to complete a December collapse that will keep them out of the playoffs for a fifth straight year. "Its definitely going to take a little while to get over this one," quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. New Yorks Geno Smith led three long scoring drives, ran for a touchdown and threw for 190 yards, while two interceptions by rookie Dee Milliner and one by 35-year-old Ed Reed prevented a Miami comeback. The Dolphins (8-8) squandered a shot at their first post-season berth since 2008 by losing the final two games to non-playoff teams, including a shutout defeat at last-place Buffalo. It was a dismal end to a roller-coaster season that included a four-game losing streak, a bullying scandal that drew national scrutiny, and a December surge that briefly left the Dolphins in control of their playoff destiny -- but turned out to be a tease. "Our record is 8-8, and thats the definition of average," cornerback Brent Grimes said. "We felt like we could be a much better than average team, so were disappointed. We messed up in the last two games. Weve just got to live with that." The Dolphins were outscored 39-7 in those final two games. Now owner Stephen Ross must decide whether to shake up a regime led by second-year coach Joe Philbin and sixth-year general manager Jeff Ireland. "You have to earn your way into the playoffs. Clearly we didnt do that," Philbin said. "The results start with me. The head coach is responsible for the results. The offence, the defence, the special teams, the record -- it starts with me. Lets not stand here and blame the players." The Jets (8-8) celebrated as though theyre playoff-bound but will sit out the post-season for the third year in a row. After the game, owner Woody Johnson announced that coach Rex Ryan would return for a sixth season in 2014. Ryan, whose future had been in question, said Johnson gave him the news before the game. When players were told afterward, they cheered in the locker room. "Ill say this -- I love being the head coach of the New York Jets, plain and simple," Ryan said. "You put everything youve got into it. I never wanted to go out this way. Weve missed the playoffs three straight years, and that bothers me, no question." The Jets made sure they were joined on the post-season sideline by Miami. The only points of the seasons final two weeks for the Dolphins put them ahead 7-0 in the second quarter, but the Jets rallied by mounting touchdown drives of 71 and 80 yards on their final possessions of the first half. When Smith scored on a 7-yard, third-down keeper up the middle with 3 seconds left for a 14-7 lead at halftime, an excited Ryan ran on the field to celebrate with his players. Fans were booing in the first half and streaming for the exits in the final minutes. Smith drove the Jets 63 yards to set up a field goal that gave them a 17-7 cushion with 4:18 left, and on the next play Reed grabbed a deflected pass for his 64th career interception to all but seal the victory. Milliner stopped a Miami threat in the third quarter with a diving interception of Tannehill one play after Mike Wallace dropped a potential touchdown pass that would have tied the game. The Jets played like a team with nothing to lose, which they were, and eager to spoil Miamis season. They kept the Dolphins off balance with swarming defence and imaginative play-calling, including 294-pound defensive lineman Sheldon Richardsons 1-yard plunge for his second rushing touchdown this season. Running back Bilal Powell threw a 30-yard completion to set up the Jets field goal. Dolphins receiver Brian Hartline left the game in the first quarter with a left knee injury, while Wallace and Tannehill found it difficult to click all day. Tannehill overthrew an open Wallace deep, and Wallace slipped and fell on Milliners first interception. They did combine for a 5-yard touchdown to cap an 89-yard drive. But the Dolphins running game sputtered, as usual, and Tannehill finished with a woeful passer rating of 42.1. "It cant get worse than this," Wallace said. "We let them win. We let them dominate the game. We knew what we had on the line, and we didnt come up with the plays we needed." Notes: Hartline limped out of the game after a 25-yard reception that put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the second year in a row. ... MONTREAL -- For a second year in a row, the Montreal Alouettes will start the CFL season with a new head coach. Alouettes owner Bob Wetenhall announced Monday that Tom Higgins will be the clubs new head coach. The former Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders bench boss replaces general manager Jim Popp, who took over on Aug. 1 when the inexperienced Dan Hawkins was fired only five games into the 2013 season. Wetenhall made it clear in a statement that he did not want Popp, who is considered one of the CFLs best GMs but has a career 16-20 record as a coach, to continue in both jobs. "As Ive expressed to the media in recent weeks, I wanted to continue with the formula which has brought us the success weve enjoyed these past 17 years -- having a full-time head coach and a full-time general manager to fill each of these positions," said Wetenhall. "The criteria we established was to find an individual familiar with the CFL; someone with success in that position and a background as a position coach. In addition, we sought an individual with a record for moulding and delivering championship teams. "In Toms seven years as a head coach he won three division championships along with a Grey Cup, and twice earned recognition as the CFLs coach of the year. His head coaching record of 72-53-1 speaks for itself. We welcome Tom to the Alouettes family." Popp had made no secret of wanting to continue coaching, but Wetenhall put out a statement recently saying candidates would be interviewed. A year ago, the Alouettes waited until Feb. 19 to name Hawkins, a former U.S. university coach with no experience of the Canadian game. He was 2-3 when he was fired with the team in disarray. Popp, the Alouettes GM since they returned to Montreal in 1996, took over as coach for the third time in his career and went 6-7. It marked only the second time since 1996 the teamm had a losing record, matching the 8-10 mark Popp put up in his only full season as head coach in 2007.dddddddddddd It hurt that starting quarterback Anthony Calvillo was lost for the season in August to a concussion. This time, the team waited five days longer to name a new coach and came up with Higgins, who stepped down in December after five years as the CFLs director of officiating. Higgins did not even get introduced at a press conference. The club said "time constraints and personal obligations" prevented bringing him to Montreal for the announcement, but that he will talk to the media Tuesday on a conference call. He takes over a team that will not have CFL all-time passing leader Calvillo as its starter for the first time since 2000. Instead, 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and young prospect Tanner Marsh are pegged to replace the retired future Hall of Famer. Higgins, who will turn 60 on July 13, led the Eskimos to 13-5 records twice and won a Grey Cup in 2003 in his four years with the club. He had a 28-25 record in three seasons in Calgary from 2005 to 2007. "Tom has worked with and tutored many of the CFLs finest quarterbacks -- Doug Flutie, Henry Burris and Ricky Ray, to mention a few," said team president Mark Weightman. "His expertise will be invaluable in the development of Troy Smith and Tanner Marsh." Higgins has spent 23 years in various CFL jobs, including a stint as GM in Edmonton. A native of Woodbridge, N.J., and a former linebacker and defensive tackle, Higgins played for Calgary and Saskatchewan in the 1970s. Popp replaced Rod Rust as coach at the end of the 2001 season, but gave way for Don Matthews the following season. He stepped in again when Matthews left for health reasons in 2006. Marc Trestman, now coach of the Chicago Bears, coached the club from 2008-2012, winning two Grey Cups. ' ' '

A five-run ninth inning against Giants closer Sergio Romo might just change how manager Walt Weisss club views its road trips to San Francisco. D.J. LeMahieu hit a tiebreaking single after going hitless in his first three at-bats, and the Rockies rallied to beat the Giants 7-4 on Friday night. "Its a tough place to play, not only for us but for everybody," said Weiss, whose club had dropped 15 of 18 at the Giants waterfront ballpark. "The Giants are always tough at home. To win a game like that, not only the first game of the series but the way we won it, (is) big for our club." The Rockies had gone five straight innings without a hit before scoring five times off Romo (3-2), who went into the night tied for most saves in the majors. Troy Tulowitzki had a leadoff single, but was replaced by Charlie Culberson after injuring his foot reaching first base. After Justin Morneau singled, Romo retired Wilin Rosario on a fly to centre field. He then intentionally walked Corey Dickerson to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Ryan Wheeler hit a two-run single before LeMahieus soft single to centre drove in Dickerson. "(Romo) does such a good job of keeping the ball down," Wheeler said. "Even the pitch I hit, I think it was a ball. I hit the barrel and it went up the middle." Michael McKenry added an RBI single off George Kontos, and LeMahieu scored while McKenry was caught in a rundown between first and second. Matt Belisle (1-2) pitched one inning for the win, and LaTroy Hawkins worked the ninth for his 12th save. "This team knows what to do and we continue to hold each other accountable, but you still have to get it done," Belisle said. "Tonight, thats what happened." The Rockies had to overcome an injuury-shortened night by starter Jorge De La Rosa.dddddddddddd The left-hander, who had lost his previous two starts, was forced out of the game after the third inning due to tightness in his lower back. The Rockies bailed him out with their huge ninth, marking the eighth time this season Colorado has won in its final at-bat. "They found a way to find the holes," Romo said following his third blown save this season. "I have no explanation for that other than it was their night. I felt fine. I needed a groundball and it didnt work out." Up to that point, Weiss team hadnt done much. Tim Lincecum worked six solid innings for San Francisco. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner allowed three hits and two runs, retiring his final 10 batters. Three relievers combined to shut out Colorado over the next two innings before Romos collapse in the ninth. Morneau finished with two hits, the only Rockies player with multiple hits. De La Rosa struggled even before his back acted up. He had to strike out Lincecum to escape a bases-loaded jam in the second, then gave up a leadoff double to Angel Pagan in the third. After Hunter Pences RBI single, De La Rosa retired the next two batters but threw one pitch to Michael Morse before summoning team trainers and Weiss to the mound. Umpires allowed De La Rosa to make a few warmup pitches before Morse hit a tying single. Morse also doubled off Tommy Kahnle in the fifth, and Pence doubled and scored on a wild pitch by Chris Martin in the seventh. NOTES: C Rosario got hit in the face by a ball he fouled off that hit the ground and bounced straight up in the second inning. A team trainer came out to check on Rosario, who stayed in the game. ... Colorado RHP Christian Bergman (0-1) will make his second major league start on Saturday. The rookie allowed two runs in six innings in his pro debut on Monday. RHP Ryan Vogelsong (4-3) pitches for San Francisco. ' ' '

The Whitecaps used the first pick of the fourth round -- 58th overall -- to take MacKenzie Pridham, a Toronto-born forward from Cal Poly. The Impact chose Edmonton forward Jordan Ongaro 67th overall from San Diego State. The 23-year-old Pridham is Cal Polys all-time leading scorer with 27 goals and the first to repeat as Big West Offensive Player of the Year since current Seattle Sounders midfielder Brad Evans did it as a UC Irvine standout. Pridham finished sixth among Division I players with 0.70 goals per match, eighth with 14 goals and 10th with 31 points. Those numbers might have been higher had the Mustangs made the NCAA tournament or had Pridham avoided a late-season ankle injury (he was second in NCAA goal-scoring when he went down). Pridham, who trained with Toronto FC last summer, ranks second all-time in Cal Poly points (58) and multi-goal games (five) and eighth in appearances (70). "One of the hardest-working players Ive seen," said Vancouver manager Carl Robinson. "His goal-scoring record (25 goals) over the last two years has been fantastic," he added. "I was pleasantly surprised I was able to pick him up today." The 22-year-old Ongaro led the Pac-12 in goals this season with 10, ranked second in points (21) and goals per match (0.53), and third in points per match (1.11). He was a first-team all-Pac 12 section. The Canadian under-17 and under-20 player is the nephew of Ross Ongaro, a former indoor player and coach of note whose soccer resume includes stints as Canadian beach and futsal coach. The Whitecaps also took a pair of midfielders from the New Mexico Lobos in 22-year-old Ghanaian Michael Kafari, in the third round, and 25-year-old Costa Rican Michael Calderon, in the fourth. Calderon excelled at the recent MLS Combine, ranking second in chances created, according to Opta Sports. The Vancouver draft picks from New Mexico have Whitecaps connections. Both wwere Lobos teammates with midfielder Ben McKendry, a product of the Whitecaps residency program.dddddddddddd And Kafari played with Whitecaps midfielder-forward Kekuta Manneh at the Austin Aztex of USL PDL. Robinson said the intel from McKendry on the two Lobos was nothing but positive. "Theyre good players, thats the be-all and end-all of it," Robinson added. He sees the five-foot-eight Calderon as a No. 10, a creative player who can unlock defences. "As a club last year, thats what we missed," he said. Kafari, a more deep-lying midfielder, has a U.S. passport so would count as a domestic player. Calderon counts as an international but Robinson said the player is getting married, which may impact his status. Robinson said he had expected Calderon to go higher in the draft, theorizing that perhaps some were turned off by his age. "It definitely wasnt a turnoff for me because technically you can see he has a lot of attacking qualities in him." Vancouver added a 2014 international spot in a deal that sent a third-round pick, 45th overall, to the Columbus Crew. The Whitecaps have 11 international roster spots, 10 of which are currently being used, through the 2014 season. Robinson said getting the international spot gives the team the security of knowing it can accommodate one of its overseas targets. The Impact picked up forward Pete Caringi from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with their third-round pick. The 21-year-old won the Golden Boot in the PDL in 2013 with 16 goals in 12 games for the Baltimore Bohemians. He played four seasons with the UMBC Retrievers, scoring 37 goals and adding 17 assists in 79 games. "Blessed to be drafted by (at)impactmontreal," tweeted Caringi. Toronto FC, which did not have a third-round pick, selected Rutgers forward Kene Eze in the fourth round, 60th overall, on the New Jersey natives 22nd birthday. Eze led the Scarlet Knights with eight goals this season despite missing six games due to injury. He finished his collegiate career with 22 goals and eight assists. ' ' '

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Paul Rabil scored two goals and added two assists to lift the United States to a 10-7 win over Canada in the opening game of the world field lacrosse championships Thursday. LOS ANGELES -- The ovations started after the Los Angeles Kings third goal in 16 minutes to open Game 4 of the Western Conference final, and the home crowd eventually serenaded its team off the ice for intermission. The low-scoring Kings have become the Stanley Cup playoffs highest-scoring team. This defensive powerhouse is shutting down the Chicago Blackhawks big stars while pushing the defending champions to the verge of elimination. Yep, the Kings deserved a hand -- even if they insist they still havent anything thats really worth cheering. Jake Muzzin, Marian Gaborik and captain Dustin Brown scored in a dominant first period, and Los Angeles beat Chicago 5-2 Monday night to take a 3-1 series lead. Muzzin and Drew Doughty each had a goal and an assist, and Jonathan Quick made 22 saves as the Kings moved to the brink of their second trip to the Stanley Cup Final in three seasons with their third straight win over the defending champion Blackhawks. Gaborik, who joined the Kings on March 5 and immediately catalyzed their offence, took a momentary break from the businesslike atmosphere of the Kings dressing room and just plain marveled what Los Angeles has accomplished this spring. "To come into every game with that confidence, to have that mojo that you can win every game, thats the difference," Gaborik said. "Its great to come to a team like this and be part of a winning culture." Tanner Pearson added an empty-net goal for the Kings, who have been to the NHL finals just twice in franchise history, winning their only title in 2012. One year after Los Angeles lost the conference finals in five games to Chicago, the Kings have their own chance to close it out in five. Game 5 is Wednesday in Chicago. "Were not looking ahead," Kings forward Justin Williams said. "Chicago, I believe theyve been down 3-1 before. Every team has been through experiences that have made them better. Stanley Cup championship teams like Chicago and us, weve been through a lot. Weve persevered through a lot, and theyre down 3-1, were trying to squash them, and theyre trying to get some life." Two days after the Kings gritted out a 4-3 victory over Chicago in Game 3, they won again at Staples Center by scoring three goals on their first six shots of Game 4, capping an incredible three-game offensive performance by the lowest-scoring NHL team to make the postt-season.dddddddddddd. After trailing 2-0 late in the second period of Game 2, Los Angeles scored 13 goals in less than 100 minutes, capped by a dominant first period in Game 4. Muzzin scored on a power play. Gaborik added his 10th goal of the post-season off Duncan Keiths turnover. Brown banged a puck into an open net for another power-play goal, his first score since Game 7 of the first round against San Jose. Cue the standing ovations. Brandon Saad and Bryan Bickell scored and Corey Crawford stopped 16 shots for the Blackhawks, who didnt get rolling until they trailed 4-0 late in the second period. "I dont think we played that poorly," Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. "We made some mistakes, and their confidence snowballed on us. Next thing you know, it doesnt matter how hard you work or how many shifts you spend in their zone. If the bounces arent going your way, its tough to get back in a game like this. Were going to find a way to get those bounces again and get things rolling our way. Well work ourselves out of it." The Blackhawks escaped a 3-1 hole in the second round against Detroit last season, but thats the only time in franchise history Chicago has rallied from that deficit -- and the Kings are an entirely different post-season challenge. "Its not a good position to be in," said Patrick Kane, who assisted on Bickells goal for his first point in the series. "Coming into this series, wed be lying if we thought wed be in this position, but it happens. Got no one to blame but ourselves, so were the only ones that can get ourselves out of it." After their dominant opening period, the Kings kept pressing in the second, and Doughty put a long shot through traffic midway through the period. Doughty, the Kings leader in ice time, has goals in back-to-back games after scoring just once in the first 16 playoff games. Chicago finally beat Quick when Saad scored on a backhand. The Kings sat back on defence to start the third period, and Bickell got just his second goal in eight games when he jumped on a loose puck in the slot with 10:31 to play. NOTES: Chicagos power play went 0 for 3, dropping to 1 for 24 on the road in the post-season. ... The Blackhawks scratched F Brandon Bollig in favour of Peter Regin, who sat out Game 3 after Andrew Shaws return. ... Game 6 would be Friday at Staples Center. ' ' '

TORONTO - Sitting in the home of assistant coach Bill Bayno one February evening, Jonas Valanciunas fretted over the slump that had befallen him. "Im not scoring," the young centre griped, as he and his most devoted mentor watched film, hoping to get to the bottom of the recent on-court funk that was beginning to wear on his confidence. JV, youre 21-years-old," Bayno responded. "Theres no centres in the league your age that are even playing much less averaging 10 points a game. Youve had great games [but] when you have a two-point game, going up against a really good, tough [centre], you cant get upset about it." His message, the teams message, has never wavered. "Youve got to do the other things to help us win." With that in mind Bayno put pen to paper, drawing up a list of attainable goals for Valanciunas, a cheat sheet consisting of basic fundamentals that can now be found taped to the right side of his locker. Outwork, outrun, sprint[Set] great, legal screensStep to [your] manBlock out And it goes on like that. "He got really down on himself when he went through that tough stretch," Bayno explained. "So we just really sat down and talked and [I] said, look, its no secret, JV, these are the things youve got to do." "Youre going to have some ups and downs," he told the second-year pro, "but Im going to write it in your locker, so every day before the game you see, this is what you have to do on a nightly basis." "Everything thats on that sheet is what we work on." Its a simplistic tool but one that the Raptors first-year assistant feels strongly about, one that has yielded proven results throughout his coaching career. Admired for his innovative player development techniques and his passion for molding young talent, Bayno first adopted this method of teaching on one of his regular trips to Africa, about a decade ago. There he met Michael Scholl. The two would become good friends and Bayno eventually hired Scholl as his assistant at Loyola Marymount University in 2008. Scholl - who spent eight years in Africa running an AIDS prevention campaign and implementing youth basketball leagues - introduced Bayno to an old Harvard study, something he used himself to motivate the children he taught there. The study correlated the success of students with writing down their goals and displaying them in their dorms. Bayno, like Scholl before him, applied that principle to basketball. "Having those goals, having them written out where they see them every day I think is huge and its been proven," said Bayno, who is also planning on employing that strategy with the Raptors other sophomore, Terrence Ross. "The vets dont need it. The vets will laugh at you if you try to do it. They really dont need it anyway. I could say to Chuck (Hayes), remember five games ago, you had that kick out situation, you missed a kick out. Hell say, yep, and hell know exactly the play. But the young kids need it." Bayno has spent more one-on-one time with Valanciunas than anyone on the staff this season. Whether hes sparring with JV in the post - wearing his trademark forearm pads to simulate in-game physicality - throwing out-of-reach passes to him in practice or hosting him at his house for an extra film session, Baynos fingerprints are all over the sophomores continued development. "He works with me a lot actually," Valanciunas said of Bayno. "Hes helped me a lot, especially on the post-up moves. Now I feel much more comfortable going against those guys, like big centres. What were working on every day is helping." Bayno, like head coach Dwane Casey and the rest of the Raptors staff, has worked to manage Valanciunas own expectations and lesson the external pressure that he faces as an emerging star in the league. Theyre not overly concerned with his scoring totals or the number of touches he gets in the post. He shouldnt be either. They know his value, at least this season, cant be measured using a box score. Instead they hope to lay down a foundation for the future. His role is to do the things he can control, to master the basic fundamentals of the game that will ensure his longevity in the league. The "little things" as Bayno calls them. "Were a good team because hes accepted his role and hes done all the little things," said Bayno, formally an assistant in Portland and with the Timberwolves. "I really believe hes going to be a good scorer in this league." "Im not expecting a lot of point production every night out of him," echoed Casey. "If he gives it to us, its great but I dont want to put that kind of pressure on him. Hes growing, hes a second-year guy. Im not going to expect him to get 23 points, 24 points every night. If he does, its gravy. If he runs the floor, rebounds, plays defence, for this team, this year, thats great. I promise you, his offence is going to come. We all want it to hurry up and get here yesterday but Im more concerned about him picking up the speed of the game, the rebounding, defending the low post, defending his position and reacting in the half-court game. His career is going to be long enough. Hes going to be a scorer in this league two or three years from now." A month ago at this time Valanciunas was pressing. The touches were not there every night, his scoring numbers dipped, as did his playing time. More often than not Casey would opt for a smaller, more experienced lineup late in games. Valanciunas was frustrated. Then the card went up in his locker. He sees it nearly each day, before and after every home game. Currently, hes playing some of the best basketball of his young career. Whether his improved play is related or a happy coincidence, he has been carrying out the very tasks Casey and company have been emphasizing. In Sundays win over Atlanta, Valanciunas recorded his team-leading 19th double-double of the season after totaling eight as a rookie a year ago. He played 33 minutes, attempting just four shots while matching a career-high with nine made free throws. His impact on the game was understated, yet significant. His point production has gone up but, as Casey points out, hes not necessarily seeing more touches. Instead hes working for them. Hes running the floor, hes rebounding, hes getting to the line and as a result hes playing more and closing out games. He understands how his bread is buttered, at least for the time being. "Im not a scoring machine," Valanciunas acknowledged. "Im a worker. My job is to get a rebound, to set a screen to make DeMar (DeRozan) open, or Kyle (Lowry) open, or [Ross] open, whoever is playing on the perimeter. My job is to box out [and] go for offensive rebounds. Thats my job." In less than four weeks, Valanciunas will make his first playoff appearance. Although hes peaking at the right time of season, the internal expectations havent changed. Outwork your man, set hard screens, box out, run the floor, do the little things. Hes heard them every day since arriving in training camp five months ago. Hes practiced them. Only now, handwritten in bright, unmistakable lettering, they stare him in the face. Adam Cimber Jersey . Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, As many have mentioned, Dan Carcillo can get three, 10 or 20 games for hitting linesman Scott Driscoll on Thursday night. Why such a range of suspendable games in the NHL rule book? Also, have you ever been hit by a player like Driscoll was last night? Or did someone come close? Jason,Markham, ON Jason: Its unacceptable and intolerable for a player, under any circumstance, to deliberately apply physical force in any manner against an official! Daniel Carcillo subjected himself to an automatic suspension under rule 40 when he crossed the line and clipped linesman Scott Driscoll with his elbow. Rule 40 is very specific and unique in that it provides authority for the referee (officials) to impose a player suspension; including a varied range of game numbers. The history of this rule is also unique and was implemented following a hard line taken by the NHLOA in 1982, when players that physically abused an official were given a mere slap on the wrist by the League. This is how it all transpired and as I documented in my book, The Final Call. In my second year in the league, there was more than a growing concern that player violence and disrespect against on-ice officials had escalated beyond anything that could be tolerated by the members of the NHLOA. Referee Andy Van Hellemond was the most high-profile target of player abuse, having been crosschecked in the back by Barclay Plager of the St. Louis Blues and then punched in the chest by Paul Holmgren of the Flyers. Van Hellemond, along with Dave Newell, president of the NHLOA, and legal counsel Jim Beatty, pulled NHL president John Ziegler away from the annual office Christmas party in Montreal on Dec. 23, 1981 in an attempt to convey how serious our concerns were. It was felt that if stronger suspensions were imposed, players would refrain from what had been taking place. The league seemed to prefer the status quo. Beatty then wrote a letter to the NHL, which he released to the media, advising that, because the officials feared that their safety was not being adequately provided for (as the league was obligated to do under the CBA) we would begin "working to rule." The letter clarified what that meant: if a fight broke out, the referee and two linesmen would retreat to the safety of the officials crease by the penalty box. When the combatants had finished fighting, they were to make their way to the penalty box and take their respective seats, at which time the referee would assess the appropriate penalties. This "work to rule" lasted one weekend only and quickly got the attention of the league. In my game in Winnipeg that weekend, Jets tough guy Bryan Maxwell fought an opponent behind the net under the big picture of the Queen. I blew my whistle and the linesmen and I went to the officials crease and waited. The punches eventually slow as the players looked for the officials to step in. When that didnt happen, they stopped fighting, picked up their gloves and sticks, and, obeying the commands of my waving arm, took their places in the penalty box for five minutes. By the time the weekend was over, the NHL agreed to act, and, to the satisfaction of the NHLOA, a "blue-ribbon committee" was created to discuss and implement changes. The panel consisted of general managers, coaches, referees, NHL executives and NHLPA Executive Director Alan Eagleson. The group was given the task of fashioning a rule change to take effect, subject to the board of governors approval, at the beginning of the 1982-83 season. Before the current season finished and the panel got to craft a new rule, Van Hellemond was punched again. This time, Terry OReilly hit him with a wicked right cross to the side of the head during a playoff game against the Quebec Nordiques on April 25 (OReilly was suspended for the first 10 games of the next season and fined $500).dddddddddddd. After its deliberations, the blue-ribbon committee put forward a tough policy known as Rule 67. This rule called for an automatic 20-game suspension for any player who, "deliberately strikes, or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official." It also specified an automatic three-game suspension for any player who "physically demeans" an official or who "deliberately applies physical force" to an official while being restrained during a fight with an opposing player. In both of these cases, the penalty and automatic suspension were to be imposed by the referee immediately after the game, and the player had no right of appeal! Conventional wisdom at the time was that due to the severity of the consequences there would never be another case of physical abuse against an official. That was until the night before Halloween 1983 when Tom Lysiak was playing for Chicago against Harford and he was ejected from a faceoff by linesman Ron Foyt. After the puck was dropped Lysiak skated through the faceoff circle and deliberately tripped Foyt from behind. The referee in the game, Dave Newell, suspended Lysiak for 20 games. All hell broke loose. Lysiak went to court and got a temporary injunction. Ultimately, the suspension stuck. Unfortunately, Ron Foyt was terminated at the end of the following season, in what many of us considered a case of retribution over the Lysiak affair. The rule evolved into what we now know as rule 40 to differentiate between varying degrees of physical abuse applied toward an official (There was wide gap between 20 and three games). Following the Lysiak court injunction, an appeal process was also added to provide the player with his "day in court." In this case, if Daniel Carcillo is suspended under rule 40 by the officials working the game Thursday night in NY, the League will hold a conference call with the NHLPA to review the Referees application of this rule, and will refrain from issuing public comment affirming the Referees application of Rule 40 until that call is complete. The player (or the officials) may request the Commissioner to review, subject to the provisions of this rule, the penalty imposed by the Referees (Must be filed in writing within 72 hours following notification of the penalty). A hearing will be conducted by the Commissioner on an expedited basis before the second game missed by the player due to the automatic suspension. For Category lll offenses only, the Commissioner may conduct the hearing by telephone. For Category I and ll offenses, the hearing shall be conducted in person. After any review, the Commissioner shall issue an order that: (i) sustaining the minimum suspension, or (ii) increasing the number of games within the category, or (iii) changing to a lower category, or (iv) changing to a lower category and increasing the number of games within this category, or (v) in the case of a Category lll suspension only, reducing the number of games of the suspension. Note rule 40.6 provides that in the event that the player has committed more than one offense under this rule, in addition to the penalties already imposed under this offense, his case shall be referred to the Commissioner of the League for consideration of supplementary disciplinary action. This would be Daniel Carcillos second violation of physical abuse of an official and while that would not have been taken into account by the officials last night, Commissioner Gary Bettman should already have this case moved to his desk. This column is already very lengthy Jason, so I will save player attacks that I personally endured for another time! ' ' '

Speedskater Sven Kramer says he will "likely" skip the 1,500 meters next Saturday to fully centre on the 10,000 instead for his second gold of the Games. The Dutchman, who already won the 5,000 meters during the opening weekend of the Olympics, said Monday that the middle-distance would likely be too much of a distraction during his preparation for the longer race on Feb. 18, which he is bent on winning after his blunder at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Four years ago, gold was seemingly assured when his coach sent him into the wrong lane on a crossover and got him disqualified. Kramer said that even if his coach said he could take 1,500 gold too, "it is the 10K I want to win. That is why I came here." NEW YORK -- Sidney Crosby scored his first goal of these playoffs, and Marc-Andre Fleury earned his second shutout of the New York Rangers in two nights as the Pittsburgh Penguins regained home-ice advantage with a 2-0 victory in Game 3 on Monday night. Crosby snapped a 13-game goal drought in the playoffs to give the Penguins the lead in the second period, and Jussi Jokinen added a breakaway goal. Fleury stopped 35 shots to back up his 22-save effort Sunday in a 3-0 win in Pittsburgh. He has eight career post-season shutouts and 51 wins. The Penguins, who lost the opener in overtime, lead the Eastern Conference second round series 2-1. Game 4 is Wednesday in New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 13 saves for the weary Rangers, who played for the fifth time in seven days. They have consecutive losses in these playoffs for the first time. The tide turned in Pittsburghs favour in the second period for the third straight game. Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said earlier Monday that he "hated" the second period in Games 1 and 2, and he couldnt have liked this one, either. New York had 2:15 remaining on a 4-minute power play that began in the first period, but couldnt cash in. To make matters worse for the Rangers, Crosby took a long stretch pass from defenceman Robert Bortuzzo, outraced Marc Staal, and beat Lundqvist between the pads from the left circle just 19 seconds after James Neal left the penalty box. It was Crosbys 41st career playoff goal. Although Crosby didnt score in Game 2, he played a dominant game. "Eventually youre going to see him get a goal," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said before Game 3. "Eventually youre going to see him break out. Theres no question about that." The Penguins struck for their second goal again right after killing a penalty. Jokinen jumped out of the box and got to a loose puck in the neutral zone after Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello failed to connect on a backward pass in the Pittsburgh end. Jokinen came in alone on Lundqvist and scored his fifth of the playoffs with 4:40 left in the second -- 8 seconds after his penalty ended.dddddddddddd The Rangers were suddenly down 2-0 and had the weight of their anemic power play enveloping them even more. They finished 0 for 5 and have failed on 34 straight advantages overall -- including one in the final minutes. During their last man-advantage in the second period, the Madison Square Garden crowd implored the Rangers to "Shoot the puck!" They did, but to no avail. New York led 26-14 in shots through two periods, yet trailed by two goals. Zuccarello thought earlier in the second that he had tied the game at 1, but his drive struck the crossbar behind Fleury, skittered across the goal line, and stayed out. The Rangers received their first power play of the night 5:16 in when Marcel Goc was called for roughing Dominic Moore after an icing call. Neal later got a 4-minute power play for hitting Jesper Fast in the mouth with a high stick with 1:45 remaining. Benoit Pouliot had the best chance during the first half of the advantage when he fired a drive off the right post with 14 seconds left in the period. Before that, Zuccarello had the best scoring chance when he one-timed a pass from Pouliot during 5-on-5 play from the left circle that Fleury snagged with a stretch of his glove hand with 2:41 left. Lundqvist was sharp early for the second straight night and turned aside Chris Kunitz on a breakaway, for the second time in as many days, during New Yorks first power play. NOTES: Crosby was nominated as a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, given annually to the "Most Outstanding Player" as voted by fellow members of the NHL Players Association. Dallas Stars 2 Winnipeg Jets 1 (Jets 32-32-9, 15-17-3 Road) – It was the Jets 41st one-goal game of the season. The loss dropped the Jets seven points back of Phoenix for the final playoff spot in the West. It was another case of the effort being there, but the result not. It was game one of a five-game-in-nine-day trip for the Jets. Jets were minus Andrew Ladd (birth of daughter), Zach Bogosian (upper body) and Ondrej Pavelec (Lower), to go along with a number of other players that are more long term. As a result, Paul Maurice was forced to juggle his lines, putting Evander Kane with Bryan Little and Micheal Frolik. Other than four games early this season when Kane played the left side with Little, Little has had Ladd on his left side the majority of the time. Eric ODell was flipped to left wing, while Patrice Cormier was recalled and centered the fourth line. With Bogosian out, Paul Postma was back in the lineup. All three goals came on the power play, with Ray Whitney opening the scoring at 5:32 of the first. Shots were 12-11 Dallas, with Whitneys eighth the only goal. One goal in the second and again it came on a power play. Tyler Seguins first chance went off the post, but he stayed with it and put home a loose puck for his 32nd of the year. It also extended his point streak to nine games. Shots in the second were 9-7 Dallas. Both teams had chances to score, including an Evander Kane shot off the crossbar. Both Al Montoya and Kari Lehtonen were terrific in this game, Montoya keeping the Jets in it, Lehtonen keeping the Jets off the score-sheet. Late in the period offsetting minors put the teams four-on-four when Alex Goligoski drew a penalty. Maurice immediately pulled Montoya to make it five-on-three and Little with his 22nd of the year and eighth power play goal of the year got the Jets on the board.? Little banged home the rebound of a Kane shot, with Toby Enstrom also picking up an assist. The Jets were also minus Blake Wheeler who crashed into an open door at the Stars bench moments earlier and then headed for the Jets dressing room. He did return for the final minute of regulation.? The Jets outshot Dallas 15-6 in the third but could just get the one by Lehtonen. Jacob Trouba again led the team in ice time at 24:51, Kane had four shots on goal, while Adam Pardy was the only Jet to not record a shot on goal. Little won 21 of 31 face-offs and is closing in on establishing a new career high for number of face-offs in a season. “Were getting close to how we want to play, but we are not there yet,” Maurice said post-game. “We were short some people but these guys are giving it their all. When I left work Thursday night, the New York Yankees were two outs away from a 5-2 victory over Baltimore in what would be Derek Jeters final home game of his Hall of Fame career. At that point, he had two RBIs and a run scored, but that wasnt dramatic enough for the baseball gods. Adam Jones cracked a two-run homer off of Yankees soon-to-be free agent closer David Robertson and then Steve Pearc,e briefly a Yankees teammate of Jeters, slugged a game-tying solo shot. After driving home in silence as I often do after a long day to wind down, curiosity got the best of me and I turned on the radio and started twirling the dial to see if I could pull in the Yankees broadcast. After a few seconds, I found it and was shocked to hear the Os had tied the score. In fact, by this time, Brett Gardner was laying down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the go-ahead run to second with one out. That brought Jeter to the plate. Whether you love the Yankees or you hate the Yankees, you had to be pulling for Derek Jeter in that moment. Then it happened. He sliced the first pitch from reliever Evan Meek to right for the game-winning RBI single. I almost had to pull off the road to drink in the moment, wishing I was one of the 48,613 on hand at Yankee Stadium. Half of me hoped Jeter would skip the trip to Boston and end his career right there, but thats not the Jeter way and he will serve as the Yankees DH in the three-game series at Fenway this weekend. Jeters heroics made me think back to the great Ted Williamss final game at Fenway Park on September 28, 1960. The Splendid Spinter had had a terrible season by his standards in 1959 and had been implored by the Red Sox management to retire. He stubbornly refused and came back at age 42 to hit .316 with 29 home runs, vaulting him over 500 for his career. In his final game at Fenway, the Red Sox were playing a Baltimore Orioles team that had pummelled them 17-4 the day before. There were different accounts of how many fans actually witnessed that game. Many sources claim 14,175, but author John Updike who was at the game, and wrote the classic piece for New Yorker Magazine, Hub fans bid Kid Adieu claims there were only 10,454 on hand. In any event, Williams gave them what they came for. In the eighth inning, he smashed a solo homer off off Jack Fisher into the Red Sox bullpen that cut Baltimores lead to 4-3. Williams chugged around the bases never looking up and never acknowledging the fans. Williams had had a tumultuous relationship with the fans, who quite often booed him earlier in his career and once vowed never again to tip his cap to them. He came out to play left in the top of the ninth, but was immediately lifted so the fans could cheer him one more time. It hardly mattered after the home run, but Boston did come back to win in the bottom of the 9th, 5-4, thanks to a botched double-play grounder, where the relay throw was fired into the BoSox dugout. That was the final game of Ted Williamss career as he opted not to go to New York for the final three games against the AL pennant-winning Yankees. The National League legend who stood along side Williams in the glory years of the 40s and 50s was Cardinals great Stan the Man Musial. He played his final game, also at age 42, on September 29, 1963. It was the final game of the Cards regular season at home at old Busch Stadium. There were 27,576 in the park that day. Musial had a single in his first at-bat, but the game quickly settled into a pitchers duel between the Cincinnati Reds Jim Maloney and the Redbirds Bob Gibson. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, in a scoreless tie, Musial strode to the plate and delivered a go-ahead RBI single. After a prolonged standing ovation, manager Johnny Keane lifted Musial for a pinch runner. Ironically, the second baseman who made a futile dive to knock down Musials final hit was all-time hits leader Peter Rose, who was in his rookie campaign. The game didnt finish at 1-0. In fact, it went 14 innings before the Cardinals finally prevailed 3-2. Gibson went nine innings and struck out 11, but, of course, didnt get the decision. There was a Canadian connection to this game, as well. Dr. Ron Taylor, the Toronto native, who later was one of the Blue Jays physicians, was in his first full season with the Cards and took over from Gibson and pitched two scoreless innings. Three legends who played their entire careers with one franchise - three of the greatest organizations in baseball. Jeter may not rank with the likes of Williams and Musial, but considering he delivered a walk-off single for the victory and it was in New York, in front of the largest crowd and a huge TV audience, it may turn out to be the most memorable final game of the three. At the very least, it will give a new generation a Williams or a Musial moment of their own to talk about for years to come. - The Cleveland Indians pitching staff has an mpressive record within its grasp this weekend over its final three games at home against the Tampa Bay Rays. They are within nine strikeouts of the all-time record set only last year by the Detroit Tigers with 1419. If you lose one or two in a row, thats not good. Three, thats starting trouble. We needed to get back on the winning track to keep up with the other teams. Ryan Miller, who beat Carolina in the first meeting, made 29 saves against the Flyers, meaning Eddie Lack could get the nod in this contest. Lack is 3-6-2 with a 2.80 goals-against average in eight starts, the most recent a 5-1 loss to Nashville on Tuesday. Cam Ward could be in net for Carolina after Anton Khudobin made 28 saves against Colorado. Ward stopped 21 shots in the first meeting with the Canucks. The Hurricanes (14-24-5) sit at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division and finished last year with three consecutive losses, but they improved to 4-1-1 this month with a 3-2 shootout win over Colorado on Tuesday. Staal has played in the last eight contests after recovering from a broken leg suffered in the preseason, and he scored his first goal of the season in the first period. It was important for Jordan to get that first (goal), but hes had good looks every night, coach Bill Peters said. His line was doominant early.dddddddddddd Staal, who also has three assists since making his season debut, was happy to get the monkey off his back as well. Its nice to get the goose egg out of the way. Its been happening for a few games. Ive had some good chances, he said. Were just starting to get a little more comfortable with the way were playing. There were a lot of good chances to score goals, and hopefully if we keep playing like that, we can get on a roll. Carolinas recent success is due in part to its stellar penalty kill, which hasnt allowed a goal in a franchise-record 11 straight games. Opponents have gone 0 for 28 with the man advantage in that stretch. The Hurricanes have allowed just 15 power-play goals all season - the second-fewest in the league behind Chicago (13). Real good consistency there, Peters said. Those guys have taken a lot of pride in it. (Assistant coach Steve Smith) has done a good job preparing them and making adjustments as needed. ... Theyve been outstanding for us. The Hurricanes couldnt get much going in the first meeting with Vancouver, which got two goals from Brad Richardson in a 4-1 victory Oct. 28. BARCELONA, Spain - Celta Vigo earned an entertaining 1-0 win at Levante, to end a two-game losing run. Forward Manuel "Nolito" Agudo scored from a well-orchestrated counterattack in the 19th for what proved to be the winner before both goalkeepers made several saves. Goalie Keylor Navas stretched his leg to block Nolitos powerful volley seconds before Levante forward Victor Casadesus dribbled through two defenders and was fouled by Jonathan Castro in the area. But David Barral fired the spot kick off the bar in the 61st before Celta goalie Yoel Rodriguez denied him what looked to be a sure goal by smothering a short-range effort on the line. The loss was Levantes first in seven home games. Both teams stayed in the middle of the standings. Rayo Vallecano striker Joaquin Larrivey scored two goals to help beat Almeria 3-1 on Saturday, provisionally lifting the minnow clear of the Spanish leagues relegation zone with a third consecutive victory. Rayo added the convincing victory to consecutive wins over Valencia and Real Sociedad as it revives its chances of staying in the top flight. Forward Alberto Bueno headed Rayo in front in the 38th minute at Vallecas Stadium, and Iago Falque dribbled by a defender and picked out Larrivey to tap in his cross in the 57th. After substitute Fernando Soriano pulled one back for Almeria in the 72nd, Larrivey started and finished a flowing series of one-touch passes to net his fourth goal in the last three games in the 78th. Rayo rose three points above danger. Almeria was left in the drop zone along with Valladolid and Real Betis before they play on Sunday. "We deserved this win," said Larrivey, who credited his teams turnaround on its recent change in "mentality." "Its important to keep winning points to make sure we stay up," said Larrivey. LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Rory McIlroy is making this PGA Championship feel like 2000 all over again at Valhalla. Back then, it was Tiger Woods who was making the game look easy as he started to pile up majors. Now its McIlroy, the 25-year-old from Northern Ireland who produced superior shots with his long game and made all the right putts Friday for a 4-under 67 that gave him a one-shot lead over Jason Day and Jim Furyk. "When Im playing like this, its obviously very enjoyable," McIlroy said. "I cant wait to get back out on the course again tomorrow and do the same thing all over again." For Woods, such feelings are becoming distant memories. He missed two short putts early — one for birdie, one for bogey — and looked as if he should never have tried to play the final major of the year with a sore back. Two birdies on his last three holes only kept it from being worse. Woods shot another 74 and missed the cut in a major for the fourth time. "I tried as hard as I could," Woods said. "Thats about all I got." Oddly enough, McIlroy opened with the exact same scores (66-67) as Woods did 14 years ago at Valhalla, when he barely outlasted Bob May in a playoff for his third straight major of the season on his way to an unprecedented sweep of golfs biggest events. McIlroy, who was at 9-under 133, isnt nearly at that stage. And his competition going into the weekend is a little more experienced. Furyk, a former U.S. Open champion who was runner-up last year at the PGA, got up-and-down from behind the green on the par-5 18th for birdie and a 68. Moments earlier, Day capped off the best round of a soggy day with a birdie on the 18th for a 65. Day has three runner-up finishes in the majors. Right behind were Ryan Palmer (70) and Rickie Fowler (66), a runner-up in the last two majors. Even so, McIlroy is dangerous when he gets in the lead, especially at a major. He learned his lesson at Augusta National in 2011 when he tried to protect a four-shot lead and wound up shooting 80. He bounced back for an eight-shot win at the U.S. Open, won the PGA Championship by a record eight shots a year later and only last month went wire-to-wire to win the third leg of the career Grand Slam at the British Open. "My mindset has stayed the same since that day at Augusta," McIlroy said. "If Im two ahead going into the weekend here, Im going to try to get three ahead. And if Im three ahead, Im going to try to get four ahead. ... Im just going to try to keep the pedal down and get as many ahead as possible." He didnt take his first lead until the par-5 18th hole, the midway point of his round. McIlroy blasted his driver and couldnt quite see where it went against a cloudy sky. "Is it good?" he asked caddie. "Beautiful," was all J.P. Fitzgerald said. McIlroy hit 4-iron to the front of the green, and his eagle putt rammed into the back of the cup as if it had nowhere else to go. It was a moment where the No. 1 player in the world looked as if he had just seized control of the PGA Championship. Except it wasnt that easy. In sloppy conditions, McIlroy took bogey on the tough par-4 second hole, and then had to scramble for four straight pars. But on the par-5 seventh, after another big tee shot on the left side of the fairway, he hit a 5-wood over the water to 8 feet, a shot that reminded everyone why hes the class of golf. That was one of the few putts he missed — he still made birdie — and McIlroy finished with a 15-foot birdie on the final hole. "When he hits the driver that straight and that long, and the short game is incredible, its very difficult to beat him," U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer said. "His iron shots, they are very solid. He doesnt miss many golf shots. So you just have to respect it a lot, how good he plays. Theres nothing wrong with his game." Fowler saw it during the final round at Royal Liverpool last month. He knows what kind of work is left for the guys chasing him. It can be done. But they might need some help from McIlroy. "Hes the best player in the world right now," Fowler said. "And I would say a lot of that is his confidence right now with the way hes driving the ball. If he continues to drive it, hes going to continue to be in contention at a lot of golf tournaments and win a lot of times." Maybe. But the final major is only at the halfway mark. Day has been battling injuries to his wrist ever since winning the Match Play Championship, and he was pleasantly surprised to be in the hunt at another major. He is explosive, much like McIlroy, minus the experience of winning. The Australian showed that on the final holes with a wedge to 6 feet on the 450-yard 17th hole, and a nifty up-and-down over a bunker on the 18th. "Im clearly not the favourite," Day said. "Its going to be tough to beat him. But then again, theres a lot of great golfers behind us that are in form, as well." Woods had a one-shot lead over Scott Dunlap going into the weekend at Valhalla in 2000. Of the dozen players behind him that year, only Davis Love III had won a major. This leaderboard is more compelling. It even includes Phil Mickelson, who made eagle on the last hole for a 67 and was three shots behind. It just doesnt include Woods, who ended a sixth consecutive season without winning a major. And lately, he hasnt even been close. (AP) -- In a story April 28 about responses to racist comments attributed to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, The Associated Press misidentified a lawmaker who denounced the statements. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, spoke out against the comments, not Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown, D-San Bernardino. The NAACP has decided against honouring Donald Sterling with a lifetime achievement award from its Los Angeles chapter after the Clippers owner allegedly made racist comments in a recorded conversation. Donations made by Sterling, who has owned the team since 1981, will be returned, Leon Jenkins, president of the Los Angeles NAACP, said at a news conference Monday. Jenkins would not say how much money was involved. "There is a personal, economic and social price that Mr. Sterling must pay for his attempt to turn back the clock on race relations," he said. Sterling, 80, had been scheduled to receive the honour on May 15 as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Los Angeles branch of the nations oldest civil rights organization. He had been chosen to receive the award because of his long history of donating to minority charities and giving game tickets to inner city children, Jenkins said. The NAACP has honoured Sterling several times in the past. The Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation gave $5,000 to the NAACPs Los Angeles chapter in 2010, according to tax records, and Sterling was listed as his foundations only contributor. There were no records of further NAACP contributions in 2011 or 2012, the latest years for which records were available. Sterlings purported comments have overshadowed the NBAs opening playoff round and prompted an NBA investigation. The league is planning a Tuesday news conference to discusss the probe.dddddddddddd There has been no official confirmation that it is Sterling on the recording, portions of which were released over the weekend by TMZ and Deadspin. Sterling "is emphatic that what is reflected on that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings," according to a statement from team president Andy Roeser on Saturday. Neither Sterling nor his representatives have since commented on the controversy. Jenkins, of the NAACP, was asked how detrimental he considered Sterlings alleged remarks. "On a scale of one to 10? Eleven," he said. "It goes back to a segregation system and a time that nobody in America is proud of." Members of the state Legislatures black caucus joined those denouncing Sterling. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, said lawmakers should not ignore the countrys history of discrimination. "Once again we are reminded of the ugliness and sometimes what appears to be the pervasive permanence of hatred," Weber said while speaking in support of a resolution declaring Holocaust Remembrance Week. "So I want to simply challenge us as we go forward to not think that, Yes, we see the past, but recognize the past has a profound impact on the present. And if we are not conscious (of it), it will direct our future." Assemblyman Isadore Hall, D-Compton and secretary of the black caucus, blasted Sterling and compared him to a "slave master" looking down at his African-American players. "Its an utter embarrassment," Hall said in an interview after the floor session, "not just to the NBA, but also to all the individuals who believe that at some point, in California at least, we have risen above that, and we obviously havent."
